  1. What if the choice for a high OBP outfielder was between 35-year-old Michael Brantley at a projected two-year, $16 million contract or 28-year-old Andrew Benintendi at a projected six-year, $104 million contract? https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/market-value/ Would Brantley and Benintendi be better options than a trade for one year of 29-year-old lefthand-hitting outfielder Jesse Winker with a 2023 salary of $8.25 million?

  3. That the smaller the sample the more random the results?
  4. To place matters into perspective: The Red Sox finished 21 games behind the Yankees this year after posting a 6-13 record against the Bronx Bombers.
  5. After playing to a near draw over the previous eight years, this season AL East teams dominated AL West teams with an 89-66 record in the regular season. In the postseason the AL East went 0-6 against the the AL West. The postseason is a crap shoot, but the Houston Astros may well have the league's best team.
  6. FWIW this year the Astros have won five straight postseason games by a margin of two or fewer runs. The Astros are up 5-0 today against the Yankees. The Seattle Mariners were only 26-31 after splitting their first 12 games against the Astros this year but were 1-5 against the 'Stros the remainder of the season despite going on a 64-41 run.

  9. To elaborate: Chaim Bloom was in the Tampa Bay front office at the trade deadline in 2018 when the Rays traded Chris Archer to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Tyler Glasnow, Shane Baz and Austin Meadows. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/meadoau01.shtml#all_transactions_other Infamously.
  10. What about pursuing 27-year-old leftfielder Austin Meadows, whom Baseball Trade Values lists as a non-tender candidate in Detroit? https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/non-tender-candidates-from-each-team/
  11. More on Jesse Winker and the Seattle Mariners: https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1680585/whats-next-for-mariners-and-jesse-winker-mlb-insiders-react/
  12. No player is untouchable but Jesse Winker may not be high on Seattle's list of available players.
  13. An Over the Monster blogger examines Jesse Winker as a Red Sox trade target: https://www.overthemonster.com/2022/10/20/23411582/where-are-the-deals-jesse-winker-edition
  14. It's Dipoto with a lower-case p. Then again, Valdez offers his unusual spelling of the first name of the nearly 24-year-old 18th-ranked prospect for the Red Sox. Jesse Winker may a designated hitter batting leadoff for the 2023 Seattle Mariners. Or not.
  15. In the case of Julio Rodriguez it means being culturally appropriate role model who knows the strike zone.
  16. The Athletic beat reporter Jen McCaffrey names Chris Bassitt and Carlos Rodon as likely free agent pitching targets for the Red Sox: https://theathletic.com/3691118/2022/10/19/red-sox-free-agent-pitching-targets-xander-bogaerts-contract-predictions-and-more-mailbag-part-1/ Subscription required.
  17. Julio Rodriguez would likely be disappointed. Eric Hosmer is not replacing All Star first baseman Ty France and Seattle manager Scott Servais prefers to rotate players through the DH slot ... although that could be Jesse Winker's primary role next year.
  18. Carlos Santana served as the caddy for 21-year-old Julio Rodriguez ... and a good caddy at that.
  19. I've read of Seattle fans who covet Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, Trevor Story and other Red Sox. Eric Hosmer does not fall into that category.
  20. Seattle manager Scott Servais on Wednesday defended Jesse Winker in veiled reference to the report that Winker was lazy and disliked by teammates: https://www.lookoutlanding.com/2022/10/19/23413683/mariners-end-of-season-press-conference-free-agency-injury-updates-looking-forward The takeaway from Wednesday's postseason media conference was that the Mariners may have trouble making room for Kyle Lewis, Taylor Trammell, Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro as well as pending free agents Mitch Haniger, Carlos Santana and Adam Frazier. First baseman Eric Hosmer would be a surprising pickup when fellow former Gold Glove winner Evan White probably has more upside on the far, far end of the Seattle bench.
  21. The reference was to the repeated reminders over the years that the Seattle Mariners had not been to the postseason since 2001. Trevor Story (with his underwater contract) was mentioned as a trade piece.
  22. More detail on Seattle Times beat writer Ryan Divish's comments about Jesse Winker: https://twitter.com/JoeVeyera/status/1582444432494047232/photo/1
  23. The shtick never ends.
  24. From Tuesday report at MLB Trade Rumors: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/10/dodgers-friedman-gomes-discuss-roberts-kershaw-bellinger-turner.html
  25. In response to a post about outfield trade candidates, Jesse Winker's name was offered. Thank you asking about about "Winker (2.1) and Flexen (0.3)."
