  1. Boston GM Dave Dombrowski reportedly is "focused on getting one person." http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2017/12/alex_cora_on_boston_red_sox_qu.html

  3. And a front office could falsely tell an agent that another player wants to sign a contract that represents a better value for the team. Agents and front offices earn their reputations ... and a bad reputation is bad for business. I suspect Scott Boras is doing fine.
  4. Perhaps J.D, Martinez has told Scott Boras that he does not want to come to Boston because, among other reasons, the Red Sox outfield is filled with Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Andrew Benintendi. Boras may keep the Red Sox in the loop only to drive up the price for other suitors. For all we know Boras can accurately tell other teams that Martinez has an offer of X years and X dollars from other club. Of course, this is mere speculation.
  5. But the Red Sox remain in the market for a first baseman ...
  6. The Dodgers and Braves execute a creative salary swap: The Braves have already designated Adrian Gonzalez for assignment:
  7. Perhaps the Red Sox have already done that and are headed in another direction. Or not.
  8. An agent wants to negotiate the best deal for his or her client; a club's front office wants to negotiate the best deal for the team. That doesn't make anyone on either side a prick. Boras' current asking price for J.D. Martinez may be no more ridiculous than the best offer received to date. Baseball players flock to Scott Boras because he is probably the best agent in the game. Competent front offices deal with it.
  9. Steamer600, which assumes 600 plate appearances for each hitter, projects 2018 WAR of 0.9 for Mitch Moreland and 2.9 for Carlos Santana: http://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=1b&stats=bat&type=steamer600&team=0&lg=all&players=0&sort=27,d
  10. Despite the anticipated widespread criticism, the Miami front office made the right business decision. I suspect the Marlins will exceed modest expectations on the field next year.
  11. Or when the Red Sox won the 2014-15 offseason by signing Pablo Sandoval, Hanley Ramirez and Justin Masterson while trading for Rick Porcello and Wade Miley.
  12. But Carlos Santana had 2.1 more fWAR than Mitch Moreland this year (3.0 to 0.9).
  13. To offer some perspective, Steamer600, which assumes 200 innings for each starting pitcher, projects these 2018 WAR: 5.5 Chris Sale 3.8 Gerrit Cole 3.7 David Price 2.9 Rick Porcello 2.6 Drew Pomeranz 2.6 Eduardo Rodriguez http://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&type=steamer600&team=3&lg=all&players=0&sort=19,d http://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&type=steamer600&team=27&lg=all&players=0&sort=19,d Only Sale, Cole and Porcello tossed 200+ innings this year; none of the others exceeded 175 innings.
  14. The Red Sox have posted a fellowship opening in the front office: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/job-posting-boston-red-sox-david-ortiz-fellowship/
  15. That's why I posted it ... to provide more detail. Here is a link to Alex Speier's analysis on J.D. Martinez: http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2017/12/14/risk-worth-reward-with-martinez/5EheQkpAY26ExNa8xAstaK/story.html?et_rid=1739401789&s_campaign=108stitches:newsletter

  17. Likewise, cheers and Happy Holidays, Emp.
  18. When someone offers an opinion on a proposed signing or trade, that person at least implicitly is making a projection on player performance. By using projected WAR I am being transparent on what I base my projection. Many posters are not that transparent.
  19. It was a day trip when my older daughter was studying abroad in Chile. I joke that I limit my alcohol consumption to the Southern Hemisphere. My younger daughter hopes to study abroad this summer in South Africa and Zambia (but I doubt I can afford another trip).
  20. BTW, a longtime friend and co-worker of mine shared these spectacular videos of the chapels of Notre Dame: http://chapelsof.nd.edu/?utm_campaign=NDAA+Advent+Program+2017+-+Launch&utm_medium=email&utm_source=EOACLK My agnostic friend's son is a freshman at the University of Notre Dame.
  21. Look at the party I ignited on another thread: http://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/18499-Martinez-vs-Hosmer-vs-Santana/page19 :D:D:D
  22. LOL I'd go out to socialize but I'm afraid I would decline the offer of a doobie and a beer. I don't drink (with the brief exception of two glasses of wine last holiday season on a bicycle tour of vineyards in Chile). I refuse to smoke anything since kicking a two-pack-a-day cigarette habit 28 years ago. However, living in a state that has legalized recreational marijuana, I've become edible curious. Nevertheless, I have resisted the temptation to patronize my neighborhood cannabis dispensary.
  23. 911 calls are recorded (even though some calls are cut short). I suspect law enforcement responded to something, whether it was a 911 call, a neighbor complaining about noise, suspicious activity while on patrol, or another circumstance. I hope the investigation arrives at the truth.
  24. Baseball columnist Jon Heyman reports that J.D. Martinez is on his way to Orlando to meet with representatives of the Red Sox and other teams: https://www.fanragsports.com/heyman-jd-martinez-to-meet-with-red-sox-and-others/
  25. The difference in value between the No. 1 and No. 10 free agents in any year's class is not as great as many fans believe. The winners in the sweepstakes for the top free agent are often the clubs that finish second, third and below because the team that lands that player typically overpays. With advanced metrics many teams can nearly agree on a free agent's value. The top free agent signs with the team that is willing to overpay.
