  1. In a confusing sixth paragraph, a Seattle blogger seems to propose a trade of left-hander Brian Johnson for lefty reliever Marc Rzepczynski and six years of first baseman Dan Vogelbach: https://www.lookoutlanding.com/2017/11/25/16698428/incredible-sulks-offseason-plan The 32-year-old Rzepczynski is owned $5.5 million next season in the final year of his contract. I dislike the proposal for both teams. The Red Sox probably don't want a 1-for-2 trade to add to their 40-man roster. The Mariners probably don't want to give up much of value for Johnson, who is out of options.
  2. Shohei Ohtani, who turned 23 in July, has pitched 543 career innings for the Nippon Ham Fighter of Japan's Pacific League: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=otani-000sho Daisuke Matsuzaka had pitched 1,493.2 innings for the Seibu Lions of the same league before joining the Red Sox at age 26: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matsuda01.shtml
  3. To be precise, Seattle traded Carson Smith and Roenis Elias for Wade Miley and Jonathan Aro. Miley posted 0.6 fWAR and 0.5 bWAR in 19 starts for the Mariners before being traded for left-hander Ariel Miranda, who has posted 0.1 fWAR and 1.9 bWAR in 43 appearances, including 39 starts, for Seattle. Miranda remains under team control for five more seasons. The Boston/Seattle trade may ultimately work out for both clubs but I suspect the Mariners are happy so far.
  4. Good point. I was under the mistaken impression that this forum started up only after the Boston.com forum closed down.
  5. This might be the most unpleasant evening in the history of this forum. It takes only two to ruin a party.
  6. Unless you’re the Red Sox in the 2012-13 offseason.
  7. In making his bargain and landmine picks, FanGraphs columnist Dave Cameron always links his picks from the previous year. It’s hard to take seriously criticism from a poster who apparently has not read the columns.
  8. Josh Tobias, who turns 25 years old today, has never played above Double A.
  9. Hanley Ramirez is a big guy at 6-foot-3, 240 pounds.
  10. You probably mean Christian Walker.
  11. Thank you for your opinion.
  12. On this date last year the free agents signings were Andrew Bailey, R.A. Dickey, Kendrys Morales, Chris Helsey, Bartolo Colon, Jesse Chavez, Jeremy Hellickson, Neil Walker, Charlie Morton, Josh Reddick, Drew Butera and Brett Cecil. Eight were among MLB Trade Rumors' Top 50 free agents last year: Hellickson No. 7, Reddick No. 17, Walker No. 18, Morales No. 22, Cecil No. 26, Colon No. 41, Morton No. 46 and Dickey No. 48: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/2016-17-top-50-mlb-free-agents-predictions.html None of this year's MLBTR Top 50 have signed (with the exception of No. 5 Masahiro Tanaka's opt-in): https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/2017-18-top-50-mlb-free-agents-with-predictions.html
  13. This year Blake Swihart, who turns 26 years old the first week of the 2018 season, posted a wRC+ of 47 in 212 plate appearances covering 53 games at Triple A Pawtucket. In 109 career games at the MLB level, Swihart has posted a .270/.330/.383/.713 line with a wRC+ of 93. Swihart has one year and 164 days of MLB service. In 1,716 plate appearances covering 420 minor league games, Swihart has a career line of .269/.328/.398/.727. Steamer projects Swihart with a 2018 line of .242/.304/.369/.673 with a wRC+ of 76 and a WAR of a negative 0.1 in 16 games. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=13176&position=C Swihart last played in an MLB game on October 1, 2017: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS201710010.shtml
  14. The Red Sox have added left-hander Jalen Beeks, right-hander Ty Buttrey and right-hander Chandler Shepherd to the 40-man roster:
  15. Pitchers have since made adjustments to Blake Swihart. The prognosis is not good (although I hope Swihart proves me wrong).
  16. I would not be surprised if the Mariners flip first baseman Ryon Healy in a package for an upgrade elsewhere. Nothing is ever settled in Seattle.
  17. Boston Herald columnist Jason Mastrodonato proposes a trade of Jackie Bradley Jr., Steven Wright and Michael Chavis for Giancarlo Stanton and $15 million: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox/2017/11/mastrodonato_there_is_more_than_one_way_for_red_sox_to_add_power_this
  18. One blogger proposes a three-way deal in which the Red Sox trade Jackie Bradley Jr., Jason Groome, Michael Chavis, Tanner Houck and C.J. Chatham for Giancarlo Stanton and $45 million in cash: http://www.offthebenchbaseball.com/2017/11/19/giancarlo-stanton-trade-proposal/ :rolleyes:
  19. https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2017/11/19/heres-a-reasonable-offseason-to-do-list-for-the-red-sox
  20. Kansas City right-hander Gil Meche retired in 2011 because of an injury and left $12 million on the table: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/27/sports/baseball/27meche.html However, I would not fault Dustin Pedroia for cashing in on the balance of his contract even if the injury ends his career.
  21. The Red Sox might sign Adam Lind.
  22. Many of the 2017 teams of the listed players are in the market for a replacement at first base.
  23. I simply provide balanced, unbiased information and let the reader reach his or her own conclusions ... or not. Objectivity is a heavy cross to bear.
  24. Last offseason MLB Trade Rumors predicted a four-year, $92 million contract for Edwin Encarnacion: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/2016-17-top-50-mlb-free-agents-predictions.html Encarnacion reportedly turned down an early four-year, $80 million offer from the Blue Jays before signing the three-year. $60 million contract with the Guardians (with a club option for a fourth year). This offseason MLB Trade Rumors predict J.D. Martinez at six years and $150 million, Eric Hosmer at six years and $132 million, and Carlos Santana at three years and $45 million: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/2017-18-top-50-mlb-free-agents-with-predictions.html
  25. Last offseason Edwin Encarnacion signed a three-year, $60 million contract (plus modest bonuses) with a club option for a fourth year at $20 million (or a $5 million buyout included in the $60 million total). No guarantee that Carlos Santana will get more.
