Well, it isn’t a perfect system. It essentially says St. Louis would be happy to dump the salary. They might be, but they also might want to keep a couple SP for next year, and with Montgomery hitting free agency, Wainwright retiring, and Flaherty hitting FA (and per some talking heads, wanting out of St. Louis), they would be heading into 2024 with only Mikolas under contract if they dealt Matz…

The sleeper this off-season might be Steve Matz, who outfield Stroman last night. Matz’ “back of the card” numbers have been weak in St. Louis, but his velocity and K% are right where they were when he was an effective pitcher for Toronto. Matz is owed $25mill over the last 2 years of his deal with St. Louis ($11mill AAV). His BTV trade value is (-0.1).

Actually he’s pitched pretty well this year. He had that one rough outing against the Reds with 5 ER, but hasn’t given up any since. His last 4 appearances sum up to 4 IP 0ER 2H 5K 0BB. I mean, over twice as many strikeouts as hits and walks combined? Now his sample size is small on the year. Only 8 IP…

That depends who has open 40 man roster spots, or spots they could open. Salaries are not outrageous (Chirinos - $1.3mill, Canrera - $950K), but might deter the especially cheap. That Flexen cleared waivers twice dura make me wonder who gets claimed and who doesn’t…

Both Genesis Cabrera (Cardinals) and Yonny Chirinos (Rays) were recently DFAd. Both are struggling this year, but have also shown some effectiveness in the recent past. And both are upgrades over Tayler Scott/Jake Faria types. Probably even over Joe Jacques. Cabrera’s fastball is down 2mph from his stellar 2021 season, from 97.7 to 95.7mph. Chirinos’ FB is actually a little up over his 2022 season, but so are his walks, while his Ks are way down. Should Bloom take a chance on either? Chirinos makes the most sense, since his issues are clearly not reduced velocity and he’s right-handed. But will (should?) Bloom move on him? I do have my doubts…

The idea of a static trade value means it doesn’t get situation/team-dependent. One could argue the inverse - that the trade value should be lower for the Braves because they need the upgrade less than the Sox. Also, no team is a “lock” to make the playoffs until that Magic Number hits 0. Collapses happen. The Sox looked like a lock in August, 2011, too. I remember the 2007 Mets had a 7 game lead with 17 games to play and missed the postseason…

It’s easy for them to attach some compensation. Is it accurate? Probably not. And maybe they don’t factor it at all simply because acquiring a player like Chapmen in July doesn’t guarantee even making the postseason…

Are you sure they don’t compensate for that? I don’t know either. But if you read Bitzer’s articles and posts, they do adjust values for very marketable players (like Betts) and they also knock down values of some players who require a 40 man roster spot…

Exactly how does that change by trading players on July 15 as opposed to August 1? My point is this isn’t just buyers sitting on their hands. The selling teams have no reason to deal until all the offers are on the table…
