  1. Exactly. And the one that has stabilized now is shortstop. The corners are the weaknesses now. That’s why this team needs Chapman…
  2. If the Sox want to improve defensively - and hopefully they do - they really should not bring back Turner and use the DH position for either Yoshida or Casas/Devers. Yoshida does seem the likeliest fit. But even then the Sox (if Duvall returns) have a bit of an outfield logjam. Probably either a Verdugo or Duran will be dealt. Since Duvall is more than capable as a RF, it actually could be either one. Now if Turner would accept a potential part time role, that’s one thing. But if he is looking for the full time role he does deserve, the Sox might not be the best fit . Or at least they shouldn’t be, assuming no roster overhauls this off-season…
  3. No. It’s a sweeping generalization rooted in the belief that DH is nothing but a career extender for aging union ball players. Shohei Ohtani has been a career DH. Yordan Alvarez as well. Other young hitters like Nolan Gorman have spent significant time in the role…
  4. Most of those were 4 years or less. Counting the 3 year deals to Victorino and Napoli as “major outlays” just highlights this. When you look at Epstein’s major contracts, how far down the list is Foulke?
  5. My bad. That was fake. I need more coffee…
  6. Bizarre way to answer that question…
  7. No. Theo occasionally traded prospects to fill needs.
  8. WTF are you talking about? Cherington was a complete Prospect Hoarder!! At problematic levels!!
  9. I disagree virulently with that statement. In fact, I also disagree with it violently, vividly, and, what the heck, voluntarily. When Cherington took over, spending also disappeared. Remember when he had to waive Marco Scutaro just to squeeze Cody Ross on to the roster? Not to mention, at one point Cherington has to trade away lots contractual deadweight and get back under the tax threshold, which might sound familiar to Bloom critics. Cherington good have a couple years in which he was allowed to bring in free agents. The first year was wildly successful. But everything after was an absolute disaster.
  10. Of all the reasons to avoid a player, “unproven” is the most meaningless. And it’s not even very good. I mean, is Rafaela “unproven” defensively?
  11. Did Verdugo get cut?
  12. Moving Yoshida to DH or moving Casas to DH and Devers to 1b are both good methods of tightening up the defense. And while the rotation is the biggest problem, simply throwing money at it might not change this. Or at the least stands to be a bigger deal down the road. I’d be ok with a 3-4 year deal for a pitcher, but there will be a few on this market looking for 7-8 year deals that hopefully the Sox have learned their lesson on…
  13. Turner is a good player, but with the Sox’ defensive issues and numerous questionable defenders still under contract, theyshould be using someone else as the primary DH, hopefully either Casas or Yoshida. I have repeatedly stated it should be Casas, but the Sox will probably give him a chance to improve and grow into the position (and maybe he will). If they move Yoshida to DH, then it helps with the outfielder glut. But keeping players capable of handling CF and RF at Fenway is essential, which is certainly a point in Duvall’s favor…
  14. But how would that differ from Cherington?
  15. There’s a reason notin was not rude about it the first time…
  16. If the Sox can only bring back one of Turner or Duvall, or should be Duvall. Duvall is a Gold Golve winning OF, whereas Turner has no real position anymore. And if the Sox are to upgrade the defense while moving Verdugo, they really don’t have anyone else capable of playing RF at Fenway…
  17. No you were right the first time. Gilbert was selected in 2018…
  18. I don’t quite see the parallel between Urias and Nola. The Dodgers can let Urias walk and backfill with any of their younger arms. The Phillies have very little depth after Nola and Wheeler. The thing about Urias is if you like him, you have to really like him. He’s likely to command a 7-8 year deal…
  19. Like Drohan?
  20. I agree with 5Gold. If Dombrowski and his Open Wallet and Future Budget Blind Spot) don’t sign Nola there is a good reason. Nola already makes about $17mill and is very unlikely to take a pay cut. I’m open minded on Yamamoto, but I know absolutely nothing about him so I will let others fight that battle. I do think it sounds like he could prove himself out of Boston. Of all the free agents I know about, I’m on board the Sonny Gray bandwagon. At least until I see what the fare is…
  21. Yes because I haven’t looked into it. Are there successes? Absolutely. But the bad contracts outweigh the good ones. Of course some folks think getting 4 good years on a 7 year deal is “good.”
  22. Nola has a ERA+ of 103 over the past 3 years. Gray has an ERA+ of 129 in that same time frame. 2018 is going back too far. Of course I don’t think the Sox should sign any of them. Free agency is simply overpaying players in their 30s for things they accomplished in their 20s for another team. It rarely works out for anyone but the player’s agent…
  23. I don’t know anything about Yamamoto, except that the Sox won’t outbid the pack for him. Ohtani won’t be worth it. The best 3 pitchers I know about are Urias, Sonny Gray and Snell. Nola isn’t as good as people think. And Gray is better than people think. Nola and Giolito are league-average pitchers. You insult Sonny Gray by putting him equal to one and below the other…
  24. I’d be ok with Nola if he’d the a Taillon contract. But if he wants to be paid like Rodon (or even Edwin Diaz), hard pass. He’s a league-average pitcher…
  25. And the real problem was failing to rectify this at any point afterwards…
