    Bichette was the one guy worth signing. First of all, he actually is a very good hitter. Terrible fielder with no real position, but he can hit. Plus he’s only 28, and will be a free agent for the second time this winter when he walks away from the Mets and puts himself in a battle with Jazz Chisholm for top hitter on the FA market…

    If the Sox do sell, that’s fine. They can still have a rotation of Gray, Tolle, Bennett, Bello and Sandoval. And at some point, hopefully Crawford and Crochet return. If not, maybe we get our first look at Wehunt or Eyanson or a pitcher acquired from dealing Gray, Chapman, etc.

    Even in a sellers’ market, Weissert and Slaten look like weak trade options. Sonny, Chapman, Duran and Guerrero make sense. Guerrero is 35, having a career year, and not under contract for next season, and is probably more likely to revert to being a career minor leaguer than he is maintain this performance…

    Bogaerts deal was reportedly fallout from a bidding war with Philly over Trea Turner. Each team kept upping their offer until reportedly Turner told San Diego to stop, as his wife is from Philly and that was the deciding factor. Preller then used a huge chunk of his last offer to sign Bogaerts. Probably confident Bogaerts didn’t also marry someone from eastern PA…

    Fair, but Duran was the best with 500 PA or more. Short list, but that in itself could be an issue.

    Reportedly Breslow wasn’t wild about Alonso, at least not to the point of giving him the years he wanted.

    Atlanta might greatly prefer Boston’s much cheaper and shorter problems (that also weirdly fill holes in their lineup). Now would Boston want Riley? Probably not, and $132mill makes him a pricey gamble on change of scenery. Murphy, on the other hand, actually makes a lot of sense for Boston. But his contract isn’t so problematic for Atlanta that they clearly prefer either Story or Yoshida. They might, but it’s just not obvious…

    Alonso signing quickly didn’t help. Possible fallout from no one wanting him the year before? I have no problem with Breslow (or any Sox CBO) having preferred targets in FA. In fact, it’s how it should be. But that does mean the backup plans might come off the board sooner than you like…

    It would have had to be something like that. But Duran was also the Sox best hitter last year, and wasn’t exactly a popular target around the league. Reportedly Craig wanted a high asking price, but that seems like an odd thing to complain about given the reactions to all Breslow’s previous trades. Dealing Duran for a 2b, 3b or C would have been ideal, but it would have had to be done by December 10…

    Of course once you have Bregman as Plan A, then Alonso is out of the picture anyway, since he signed on December 10, 2025 and Bregman was in play until 1/14/2026…

    Except who are you benching? Bregman at least plays 3b. Alonso and Contreras both play 1b. Both certainly work as a DH, but that role was filled by Anthony or Duran with the other in LF. Not signing Bregman did leave money for Alonso, but not a role…
