One strategy I’m not getting yet is using the closer in the ninth inning of tied home games. As the closer is ideally in most teams one of, if not the best RP, it makes sense to hold him for the 10th inning, as ghost runners make that inning tougher. In tie road games, the closer in the ninth makes sense since you want to force another inning. But in home games, I’d think use the lesser reliever in the ninth and if he can keep the tie, you have an edge with regards to remaining bullpen arms…

Last year he did make bad decisions. I was at the games in Chicago against the White Sox. In the Sunday game of that series, Casas had the ball when Andrew Benintendi rounded 2b and was HALFWAY from second to third. (My seat was behind 1b so I had an excellent vantage point.). Not sure how far Benintendi appeared to be off second on TV, but he was halfway and stopped there, watching Casas with the ball. Casas noticed Benintendi and threw the ball to 2b. Benny broke for third and beat the second relay. Casas had three options there. 1. Hold the ball and charge Benintendi, forcing him to commit to a base. (Best option) 2. Throw the ball to third. (Safest option.) 3. Throw the ball to 2b. (Worst by far.) It’s just one play, but he couldn’t have handled it worse…

I greatly prefer overpaying Devers to losing him after Betts and Bogaerts. It would have been better for the Sox if he accepted the Matt Olson extension, but much worse if he simply walked…

Based on what? Last year at age 23, Casas had a .856 OPS and 24 HRs. Devers’ age 23 was the pandemic shortened 2020, but at age 22, Devers had a .916 OPS, 32 HRs, and 54 doubles. Casas might be a bit behind Devers’ pace. Not sure why you’re so pro-Casas but so anti-Devers…

Fair. But if pitchers are riskier, doesn’t it make more sense to lock them up when they’re cheaper? As opposed to paying too dollar and THEN shelving them?

Possible he was simply a lousy 2b in college. There is this weird tendency to take overly speedy infielders and move them to the OF. There have been success stories (Billy Hamilton) but also serious flops (Donnie Sadler). I see the appeal, but I don’t think speed = defense. Some guys are fast but still lousy outfielders. And this makes no mention of Duran’s weakest defensive attribute - his arm…

I’m not even sure what this means. Freeman did play in his 20s and never approached that kind of money, accepting an extension from Atlanta of about $105mill over 5 years at age 27. A Freeman in his 20s didn’t have an MVP award under his belt and had 2 of his 3 best seasons (by bWAR) in 2022 and 2023…

Actually, Devers' AAV is higher than Betts. I suspect there was a lot of PR involved in the Devers' negotiations. After losing out on Betts and Bogaerts, I don't think the Sox could afford to let Devers walk as well. And it is hard to extend a player one year from free agency without basically paying free agent money for him. Plus Bett's deal was signed amidst a pandemic-induced shutdown. There may have been desperation on one or both sides to get something done...
