Maybe to not go to a guy who let all 4 batters he faced reach base just last night when he had two fresh relievers in the pen. Or - facing Soto and Judge with the game on the line in the 7th. And those two up constitutes “game on the line” in that case. So why not Jansen? Saving him so he can face the 7-8-9 hitters on the ninth? That’s a solid use of your best reliever…

Why would their Sox move the best defensive SS above A-ball to 2b due to some underperforming offense? (He might even be better than the A-ball crew; I just don’t know any of them very well.)

Kelly is a fungible reliever who will pitch out of a tough jam one inning and get pummeled around the ballpark by the bottom of the lineup the next. He’s the most extreme form of volatile. Booser needs to go. If Cora still has any faith in him, then maybe Cora should follow. Booser stopped being useful in late July…

I’d rather they made moves to go for it than just got close and repeatedly gave up. And the last two years they did neither, which is the worst possible path. As for the deadline trades, they didn’t give up much. Yorke was the biggest piece, and they did get a future piece for him. Several of the others were going to require Rule 5 protection this off-season anyway…

So you’re saying a team that goes 81-81 with a $250mill payroll with lots of long term commitments is in the same place as a team that goes 81-81 with 6 rookies? After all, identical records are identical records. The Sox have 3 ROY candidates (per this site) and (IMO) saw steps forward from 3 starting pitchers. Shouldn’t that count for something?

Barring unforeseen trades, if you think the Sox need that many pitchers, you’re going to be disappointed. A better hope IMO is that the Sox don’t foresee Whitlock and/or Fulmer in the rotation that is (and barring trades, I say this with a 100% guarantee) going to include both Bello and Crawford. Not one or the other. I also doubt the Sox guaranteed $10mill to Liam Hendriks so he could pitch a second string set up role while they bought a more expensive closer and another set up guy…

That you had to include $41mill in cash also shows it was ridiculous. A simpler one with no cash included would be Seattle gets Yoshida (-21) and Boston gets Castillo (-7.5) and Garver (-13), It works on their site because Castillo has 3 years and $72mil left on his deal plus a vesting option. But he’s only 31 and I don’t see the Mariners taking an offer like that seriously…

Francona owns the top spot. I put Farrell ahead Cora. Farrell is the only manager in team history with three AL East pennants. That has to mean something. i know spending was cut under Cora,, but the spending done for Farrell’s teams (Sandoval, Rusney, Hanley) wasn’t always helpful…

Is this a serious justification to equalize Abreu and Baty? So we should ignore that one player list his starting job while the other is in the running for AL ROY. But, hey, ZiPS said something 5 months ago. Apparently, as I paraphrase Douglas Adams, ZiPS is definitive; reality is frequently inaccurate.
