We did. Pomeranz is a diamond in the rough on a very cheap deal. However, many expect some regression from him, despite his peripherals the last two seasons being nearly identical. But if regression is expected, is Pomeranz a "sell high" candidate? All things considered, he'd be a terrific trade chip...

The Sox could probably get Stanton for less if they not only took his entire contract, but also agreed to take on the completely useless and very expensive Dee Gordon deal. And now that we have an opening at 2b, stay tuned...

St. Louis also has a glut of middle infielders. One intriguing name there is Kolten Wong. Wong does have 3 years / $21.7mill left on his deal, which could make him expendable since Matt Carpenter was not a success at first and Jedd Gyorko seems to have found his groove in St. Louis. So Wong is basically a pricey utility player. As a temporary solution, he's probably too expensive. But the real issue becomes - what would the Cardinals want for him anyway? -

He's a 90+ year old WW II vet. Sure I don't always agree with what he says. But i doubt I'll be typing anything thst even resembles English at that age. I'm bad enough as it is now...

They're not going to try to figure anything out. They're going to do what every good team does - try to improve. They may have to trade a couple decent players for financial reasons - potentially AJ Pollack, per MLBTR. But they aren't going to decide that last year was a fluke and they neef to deal Goldschmidt and bury themselves for a few years. But if they did, no way could the Sox acquire him. Not without giving up numerous players no one wants to part with.

A 2/3 starter will command close to big bat money and be a long term risky contract. ThIs team won 93 games without more starts from Fister than Price last year. A stopgap starter who usually signs cheap contracts and then put-performs them is Francisco Liriano. Can he do it again?

We were comparable in pitching without Price. If he comes back, he can certainly widen that gap. Don't forget a big part of our pre-season expectations was having Price and Sale...

Yes. As the youngest big name starter on the market, he could easily double that. The only reason to stay is if he feels hos elbow won't pass a physical. ..

It's the ultimate in "grass is greener" when a Sox fans compares the two teams. "The Yankees have Judge and Sanchez and Grigorius and all this young talent." Then when looking at the Sox, ignore the Killer B's and focus on "We have Hanley and can't keep Moreland." "The Yankees have Severino and Grey and all we have is Steven Wright and a gimpy ERod." See how I did that? This was the lamest trick in the softlaw bag - comparing their best to our worst. The fact is - we won more games and aren't losing any key players (they'll likely lose Tanaka). Many of their players had career years or resurgent years and many of ours had down years, two trends that could easily reverse. We need some hitting help. But I would not rebuild everything. Despite the post-season, they're still the team with ground to make up...

Absolutely. There are a few elite defensive shortstops who might be available, depending on their respective teams' off-season plans. If the Phillies turn to JP Crawford, Freddy Galvis is a potential non-tender candidate. Although an unlikely one. U Conn alum Nick Ahmed is also possibly available. Especially if AZ addresses their lackluster middle infield. Zack Cozart is a free agent.

It's not selling low if you get someone good. I would only consider Bogaerts as trade bait because he has the least service time left of the Killer B's and because the farm has little to trade right now. I also don't think every time a player has a slightly sub par season, his value plummets. GMs know what Bogaerts is capable of. Service time is a much bigger factor...

A couple years ago, both Tampa and KC tried to reinvent the wheel by limiting starters to 5 or 6 innings and going heavy on the bullpen. I don't recall how it ended, but in August those teams ranked 1-2 in team ERA. And I believe that was the year KC won the World Series. .. -
I would agree. There was no really obvious time to deal Swihart. Especially because Vazquez missed a season with TJ surgery. ..

We have middle order bats like Ozuna. The OF is fine. Get a 1b like Abreu who had put up power numbers mote than one time...

I think the Sox should add a bat I'm hesitant to think they need to address the pitching. This team won 93 games while getting more starts from Doug Fister (16) than David Price (11). If Price comes back, he is the upgrade. They do need to replace ERod at the back end. Wright is certainly possible, but I'd like more depth. Particularly depth that isn't Wright. I don't think the Sox need to add Darvish/Arrieta/Tanaka/Cobb. Maybe someone like Cashner or Garza (who is apparently Price's best friend.) Just hold down the fort until ERod returns and someone else gets hurt...

Actually his contract is only 2 yrs $23mill. No one wants that $16mill option at the end. Not in place of the $1mill buyout. Torres has played 55 games above A ball, and then destroyed his elbow. He'll probably recover fully, but he isn't going to be in your infield in April. Probably not May, either. So Castro is. And really, there is a decent chance either Torres or Andujar or both fails to make an immediate impact. I know it's hard for Sox and Yankee fans to believe, but not all prospects hit the ground running. Some take a few seasons to get it together. Doubtful the Yankees unload everyone to pave the way for these guys. So by the time the Yankees unload Castro, he might be on a one year $12mill deal. So maybe he gets dealt, but he won't have a ton of value at that point...

Ozuna was removed from CF and moved to LF this past season. He's basically the same player as Bradley, but a better fit if you like home runs and hate defense...

I soured on the Bradley/Ozuna trades. Both Bradley and Ozuna have been worth 7.3 fWAR over the past two seasons. Bradley is controlled for 3 more years, while Ozuna is under control for two. Bradley is older, but not by much (7 months). So there is no overall upgrade, both players are at the same phase of their careers, and Bradley is under control for longer. Why is it the Sox are always asked to throw in extra players in this lateral/backwards deal?

Winning the division is never a failure. It took 6 months to do and I enjoyed watching it all. Yes, it would be nice to advance beyond the divisional round. But if they lost in the ALCS, would that be considered "successful"? Ultimately only one team emerges from the season on a winning note...
