  1. Exactly. The only player I have ever seen who somehow managed to excel in key situations was Pat Tabler, who, for reasons no one could ever explain, went from being an average hitter to being am elite hitter when the were bases loaded. He was so good in that one specific situation that he was occasionally brought in to pinch hit for heart of the order hitters if it was important enough.. But beyond that one freak situational skill, Tabler was nothing special. ..
  2. I don't think it was ever a question of whether or not it was Panda's job to lose. The question was whether or not he'd lose it. .
  3. If he would, definitely. There is no such thing as a bad minor league contract. ..
  4. Sale had elbow issues mid-season in his first full season as a starter and was briefly moved to the role of closer. After a couple weeks he was returned to the rotation. ..
  5. While true, the AAV of his contract is like $5.2 million. The Sox could cut Abad and make for most. But most likely, if Craig is indeed back he'll probably be dealt to a team with more salary headroom. ..
  6. He better learn fast. His inability to get the ball back to the right base quickly last year allowed the eventual winning run to get into scoring position in a playoff game ..
  7. With the Mets, wasn't that because they Wilpons lost a rather substantial amount to Bernie Madoff. I guess that would mean the bright side for the Mets was it wasn't like the team wasn't making money.
  8. And if you or any player declined, I would and do understand that position. But I can't begrudge any baseball player who wants the opportunity to play baseball...
  9. Of course there's a bigger history of tall lefties who don't. While it's not time to give up on Owens, that time does draw nearer every season. Sure at some point he might even gain an uptick in velocity. But until he shows some semblance of control, it just means he will be walking hitters with faster pitches....
  10. As a child, we all played "telephone" or whatever you called that game where the same message was relayed from person to person and changed along the way, sometimes drastically. ..
  11. It's a concern any time a pitcher's pitching arm hurts, regardless of whether or not it puts them on the DL that day. Even if Price pitches all season, will he be the same with discomfort that isn't a tear?
  12. It doesn't guarantee him a roster spot, but it has protections for his contract. Not necessarily to the full amount, however...
  13. If Abad got injured playing pick up basketball or riding a motorcycle or doing some other contractually prohibited activity, that would be a lack of accountability on his part. But if he gets injured playing baseball in an MLB-sanctioned tournament, that's not the same thing. It's just bad (or good, if you don't like Abad much) luck. Clearly Dombrowski has some sort of positive opinion of the guy, as he traded for him and then offered him arbitration. If Abad does get released, it's more likely related to his pitching and how it changed that opinion...
  14. If Travis winds up as a weak side platoon hitter who is paired with the fairly mediocre Mitch Moreland, he isn't much of a prospect. I'm hoping he can push Moreland to the bench altogether. ..
  15. The best aspect of the Sox farm system is that with the starting lineup containing Benintendi, Betts, Bradley, and Bogaerts (and possibly Swihart), that's several positions they hopefully won't need to rely on it to fill for a few seasons. The worst aspect is the dearth of pitching. If Groome doesn't pan out for either effectiveness or injury, who's really the most likely impact pitcher? The Sox farm could be considered terrific, but the best players are already in MLB...
  16. Cecchini was traded after bring DFAd. At that point even getting cash for him was an accomplishment. Not sure why Dombrowski didn't like Cecchini but for some reason kept Brentz. ..
  17. Honestly, it's not the given it looks like. You really need a headliner type prospect to get an ace, and Espinoza doesn't seem to be considered one universally. So the entire deal rests on the opinions of Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams about Anderson Espinoza. ...
  18. Coyle and Cecchini weren't traded. While I do agree Dombrowski has been an aggressive trader, releasing players who haven't kept themselves relevant isn't the same thing...
  19. You inviting us all over to watch?
  20. My exact thoughts. People are so quick to believe in conspiracies when it's not their team/guy...
  21. Ah the token contrarian prediction. A writer trying to look brighter thsn his colleagues by going against the grain, which is so easy to do in baseball given the tight ranges in winning percentages across league. ..
  22. I say give Price extended spring training or whatever. Keep his innings down this year to may be 170-180. Then if he can still stay healthy, maybe he won't pitch so poorly in the post-season. ..
  23. I cut Pierzynski some slack. When he was with the White Sox, he used to do alot of radio out here in Chicago. I found him to be very informative and pleasant on the radio. Even the talk show hosts were surprised, given his reputation that preceded him out here. His insights into clubhouse behavior were as candid as anyone I ever heard. But then he left and his name became mud again...
  24. Price may not have signed any deal with the Lackey clause. And really, the Sox might not want Price for his age 37 season, even at minimum wage. ..
  25. It's not like I know him personally, but for some reason the stories that follow Lawrie from team to team always describe his massive arrogance and poor attitude. He hasn't helped himself with his occasional on field tantrum, including an infamous helmet-throwing incident a couple years ago. I always suspected he was the teammate who complained about Adam LaRoche's son last spring training. I'll never be able to prove it, however. (And certainly, I could be flat out wrong.) Of course all of this could just be a poor portrayal in the media. He might be the nicest guy who, when not slamming his batting helmet to the ground, spends his off hours making Linus blankets for orphans. But probably not...
