  1. If he isn't that fast, a 75% success rate makes him an outstanding base stealer...
  2. Mbeki That's the long term plan, I'm guessing. But Devers has no MLB experience and the success stories of Pedroia, Benintendi, etc won't make him contribute this year. If the Sox acquire a 3b, it will probably be a short term guy with some sort of track record. They could try Devers, but even Mike Trout was a flop on his first call up. How big of a window do you give Devers before deciding the pennant is more important thsn the farm?
  3. And that addional $14mill would be subject to the same taxes, etc. By your same math, another $13mill in salary would have only netted him another $4mill. Are you saying he's struggling with $30mill but $34mill puts him on Easy Street?
  4. Ryan Dempster made over $89 million in his career as a baseball player. If he can't feed his family on that money, another $13 million wasn't going to make a difference. ..
  5. I'd care about it more if it was true. Holt does play a lot of positions, but he plays very few of them well. He's a streak-hitting low power outfielder with very limited infield skills. Too bad he sees most of his playing time there. Really, he's Daniel Nava 2.0 who got miscast as an infielder. I hope his career isn't over, but he's very replaceable as a utility infielder.
  6. 9 steals in 11 attempts (82%) is pretty damn good for someone who isn't a base stealer...
  7. #11, i believe
  8. Bruce is having a decent bounce back season after sucking for the past 3 years. But I'd be leery of him turning back into a frog. If the Sox want him, hopefully the price isn't too much. That would be a double slap considering the Sox could have gotten him for next to nothing in March...
  9. It's also impossible for the leadoff hitter to come up with 2 outs, which was part of the criteria. ..
  10. To be fair, Holt was still in the picture at that time. ..
  11. Teams are giving up those blue chip prospects at the deadline more often now. Prospect value is down. That's how the Yankees rebuilt the farm quickly..
  12. Which was remarkably stupid considering the short leash Sandoval has always been on. They basically put him the 60 day DL if he gets soap suds in his eye. ..
  13. Onev problem that the Sox will face when making deals is the lack of MLB-ready talent to deal. If they want to get a worthwhile player, there can't be an Untouchable List. Donaldson, for example, would be great. But the Jays aren't trading him to Boston if Devers, Travis and Groome are all off the table. Prospects don't get the types of packages they did 2 and 3 years ago. If the Sox want a good player for 3b, especially one with some control, a package of Chavis, Ockimey, and Swihart won't cut it...
  14. While he may not view 3b as the primary need, I do not think that Sandoval is a face-saving player for Dombrowski. Sandoval's a Cherington blemish...
  15. What if he opts out and then sucks? Price's "value" to the Sox is largely related to His ability play baseball. Recently some others added players included Lugo and Swihart, among others.
  16. Its also potentially being more overblown in the media than it deserves. ..
  17. Made doubly interesting by the rumors that Russell may be short-lived in Chicago.
  18. The Cubs traded their best prospect last year (plus others) for a rental closer when they already had a guy (Hector Rondon) doing a very good job in the role....
  19. 1. If Price feuding with Eckersley is a big deal, Escobar is a bad fit. He has a reputation for leaving trail of unpleasantness wherever he goes. 2. The value of prospects has plummeted in recent years. While I believe Escobar to be a rental, he's very likely to be pricier than people realize. 3. With Jhonny Peralta already in house and Marrero not costing games, the urgency isn't there...
  20. Exactly. I don't get why people call them "fake news" or whatever (although the use of that term in this thread may have been a poke at President Trump, but many others have voiced similar opinions not in jest.) Do these people have a different definition of the word the "rumors" than I do?
  21. I believe he means the Sox all expected Price to suck for a few years on his deal, and the hope was the early years would make the later ones not matter....
  22. I have a lot of issues with the Price signing, and not one of them involves whether or not he gets along with Dennis Eckersley...
  23. With Hanley a physical question mark, maybe the Sox should look into Miguel Montero once he clears waivers. Certainly not as a catcher, where the Sox are solid defensively. But as a DH. Montero is a lousy catcher and apparently not much of a teammate (although, technically, he was right about Arrieta), but he can hit (112 OPS+ this year). Some team is going to get him for a pro-rated league minimum salary, with the Cubs picking up the tab. Probably Tampa...
  24. I had a pretty good run of suggesting low profile players the Sox should have looked at. The two they finally did panned out pretty well - Cody Ross and Rick Porcello. Of course plenty of others went on to abject failure on other teams. Lately every deal I hate has been working out. And everyone I liked has flopped. I guess that makes it time to start hating on Jhonny Peralta. ..
  25. Only if the Sox can also include Rusney Castillo plus a bad contract to be named later...
