  1. "Might play more than Holt our Marrero" isn't much of a reason to keep him. And I'm sure Dombrowski feels that way too. I do doubt he plays more than Moreland. Are you sorry of implying he will play better than Moreland? And hit better? I'm not much of a Midland fan, but that does seem a bit optimistic to me. ..
  2. If the offers aren't very good, that's fine. That's no rule that says Dombrowski has to accept any of them. I wouldn't go assuming you would hear about any worthwhile offers though. For example, it took months until before we heard the Guardians offered Encarnacion for Bradley. The bottom line is, Swihart is very tradable, and may never look this good again. And dealing him in the right deal could solve multiple issues. There is no reason to be so close- minded to the possibility. He might be the next Mike Zunino. But he also might be the next Eric Wedge. And if he is the next Wedge, people will blast Dombrowski for not dealing him at the right time, just like they did with Garin Cecchini and any other prospect who didn't live up to the hype. ...
  3. I wouldn't be surprised if Moreland's role was minimal at first and Hanley was given every opportunity to return to form. I think Hanley's questionable stamina and health and ancillary to hurt himself will play a bigger role in this option than the alleged platoon. ..
  4. A couple seasons ago, both Cash and Ned Yost were experimenting with the idea of minimizing starter innings and relying heavily on the bullpens. Our wad actually working out very well as the teams were 1 and 2 in ERA and 14 and 15 in starter innings in the AL...
  5. And who thought - though they deny it now - that Pedro Ciriaco was the future at shortstop. But really, on this team Swihart is slated to be a bench bat. Exploring dealing him for a starter, bullpen arm, or starting player down the road does make some sense. Especially for a player they do like for whatever reason. ..
  6. While true, Upton was extend thIs off-season prior to anyone realizing his much he would have really received on the open market. ...
  7. So you're saying no one would give anything up for him? (Possible, but we don't know what has been offfered.) Or do you believe all the pre-season numbers despite years and years of watching player after player have a brilliant March only to follow up with an average to below season and a very short career? We don't really know how good Swihart is, but what we do know is other teams seem to want him badly. If one makes a good enough offer - even if it is just a farm-building prospect - the Sox could and likely will consider it. After all, while most people seem to agree we don't know how good Swihart is, a very big segment of them seem to have eliminated the possibility of "not very" and everything below it...
  8. Between the age and arm problems, Dempster is probably throwing about 60 mph by now. Not sure a fastball that couldn't get a ticket on the Mass Pike is as intimidating as you hope...
  9. Actually, no. On all fronts.
  10. Trading a player is not the same as "giving him away."
  11. Moreland is probably the least exciting first baseman for the Sox since Todd Benzinger, but to if the big error was that we blew the chance to get Lucas Duda cheaper, that's is really stretching. And I get the $2-3mill difference. But that can be recouped by dropping the useless Brock Holt. It's funny how people are complaining about overpayment on a 2 year $13mill deal, the same money we gave to Jonny Gomes and Chris Young ans no one complained. Be thankful you're not Angels' fans after that deal Justin Upton got...
  12. He's nowhere near Kendall. Might as well have his ceiling as Joe Mauer. BR Hall of Fame Monitor has Kendall as a borderline Cooperstown candidate. I think you undervalue Jason
  13. It doesn't sound like the Sox are going to DFA anyone. I've even heard Dombrowski talk about how he likes Marrero. It looks like either Holt starts the year in AAA or Swihart gets traded, which is not as unrealistic as many fans want it to be. ..
  14. To keep draft picks? That was the big deal with Moustakas anyway. ..
  15. It doesn't sound like you like him all that much. Why would anyone else?
  16. It doesn't sound like you like him all that much. Why would anyone else?
  17. Actually sending down better players with options happens all the time. Remember that fit Tommy LaStella threw when the Cubs demoted him 2 years ago instead of DFAing a worthless Chris Coughlan?
  18. Especially backup catcher, which was what Lucroy wad wanted for
  19. Well a minor league contract doesn't count at all until the player gets added to the 40-man roster. But the contract the Rangers gave Jon Niese is a good model, where he will make between $1mill and $1.45 mill if they need him, which is a small price for an upgrade. And as the Sox have to DFA someone to add him, it cuts into the budget slightly less...
  20. Johnson will with be in mlb or released. There is no third option. So if he starts, he still needs to be replaced in the pen. Elias is being covered to relIef. Rodriguez is hurt, which is getting to be a little too common. Wright is hurt, and is 33 years old with exactly one good season under his belt. That leaves 29 year old Hector Velasquez as our style source of living depth. Ironically he was officially signed as a minor league free agent, the exact same thing I have been saying the Sox need to do all off-season
  21. That's actually a horrible summary. While the numbers are right, Fister did start slow, which should be expected when you sign a player whose a free agent mid season. Down the stretch he was outstanding. And you absolutely cannot count on pitchers like him being available every year in the middle of the year. It makes sense to grab guys on minor leage deals now (on months ago actually). Why are you so opposed to this zero risk strategy thst 28 major league GMs have been using all off-season? You've never given one good reason why, except you think it can happen at any time. But even then, what's so wrong with being prepared?k
  22. $7.5mill is middle reliever money...
  23. I'd take Dickey in a hearbeat. But maybe at 43 he wants a guarantee or he retires?
  24. After I posted that I realized that was Epstein's year when thd team quit and collapsed...
  25. Well one of those last place finIshes was when the team basically quit on him. They were in first into September. Is that really the GM who's at fault? The team was more than competitive for five months. And another last place finish was the fire sale team of 2012. Really 2014 is the indefensible one. But even then he returned a roster largely intact from a World Series champion. His failures were more related to his transactions. Sandoval was a bad call any way you look at it. Ramirez looked like a bargain but didn't work out. The early struggles of Bradley probably influenced him to sign Castillo, who is mired in AAA purgatory. The unorthodox Lester and Lackey trades did nothing to build the future. And he never dealt any prospects, which teams need to do tp stay competitive. The whole"last place the times" thing is an oversimplification. He also had a fire sale and won a title 14 months later, which is really impressive no matter how you look at it. ...
