  1. Yes. This is stupid. If you want to see your young players, make room for them on your roster like everyone else does in other sports. No more 17 man bullpens and 6 pitching chances in an inning...
  2. I can’t remember my source, but I believe Beltre has said he wants to finish up in Texas. He might be prioritizing family at this point in his Hall of Fame career. Source or not, it certainly is possible...
  3. So one year of a set up who could be making $7.5-8mill nets two top prospects plus another from a deep organization that has needs beyond the bullpen? I’d also doubt the Rockies sell so low on Gray and especially at a time when they’re coming off a postseason berth and already have a pretty good 1b prospect who needs a chance. Not to mention Bird hasn’t done anyone any favors with his frequent DL time..
  4. Groome is only like 20, so he isn’t a lost cause yet. But given how bad his first couple years have been, it is disheartening that so few prospects have surpassed him in the rankings. Maybe when BA and Fangraphs and everyone else has their rankings, it will reflect differently on other prospects with respect to Groome. But do you really see 4 who should have surpassed him?
  5. His agent would be a complete idiot to recommend anything else...
  6. Absolutely true. And just like with managerial decisions, we as fans operate with virtually n facts and history. Who knows what previous offers were rejected? That said, the farm is undeniably bare. This is ok because it was well spent. But there’s no need to kid ourselves that being happy with the present means we have to be happy with the current outlook for the future. And by future, I am including potentiall trades between now and August...
  7. That’s ok . So does DD...
  8. A deal of Swihart (-0.3 fWAR) and Brian Johnson (0.4 fWAR) for Healy (-0.8 fWAR) and Colome (1.0 fWAR) does add up in that respects. And the Sox fill two needs, eliminate two surpluses and take on only the arbitration cost of Colome....
  9. The whole year before going to Arizona. Technically Dombrowski has never really had the title of GM, but Hazen did under him despite Dombrowski handling the more public duties of the role...
  10. If Swihart could be had so cheaply, he would have already been dealt and the Sox might not have released Hanley...
  11. Dombrowski seems to like him too. Not sure if he sees him as a starting catcher or ot...
  12. And Mike Hazen in 2015. The Interim Mike’s...
  13. See, I think you overvalue Colome (1 fWAR) and Healy (-0.8 fWAR).
  14. But when the defense is a pure minus like with Gary Sanchez, that’s different. Right?
  15. Three things if you count his being spokesman for Viagra. Not sure why he lost that deal after his PED suspension. It really should have helped his cause. “I’m Rafael Palmeiro and I know a little something about enhanced performance...”
  16. If the Smith-Zunino trade is any indication, the Mariners appear to want controllable MLB players. I could see either Healy or Colome as a match for Boston. But I would not empty the farm for both. Although if including Johnson got it done, I’m amenable...
  17. So what do you suppose the Mariners would be willing to trade for Vazquez? Or for Swihart?
  18. Absolutely. In that case, I just look at it from the other side and the simple corollary still works. Or that could also be looked at as the willingness of Team A to meet the demands of Team B...
  19. I was being facetious. Not sarcastic, just facetious...
  20. As the originator of that factoid, I do feel it is necessary to point out that Duquette was the last Sox GM to have the position for more than one year and not win it all. The Sox did have two interim GMs who I think need to be called the Interim Mike’s (Mike Port and Mike Hazen) who did not win a ring in their one year tenures...
  21. I know people like to cite this as one of the most egregious examples of a bad award, but no one ever considers the possibility that in those 28 games, Palmeiro was really, really good...
  22. It might not be a non-issue. The Mariners have a couple players the Sox should like. Both might be reaches for Vazquez (assuming he is the target). But I’d say there is a mild possibility of a deal. My personal preference is to move Swihart if any of them have to go. But if a good trade can be found for Vazquez, I assume DD will listen...
  23. Oh you say that about all the Sox players. But a player’s true value in a trade depends on only two things, neither of which can be quantified statistically (although they might be justified that way). The only true factors to determine trade value are 1) How badly Team A wants to acquire the player, and 2) How badly Team B wants to keep the player. If the Mariners really want Vazquez, they offer more for him. If they don’t want him that much, they offer less and move on if it doesn’t meet the Sox demands...
  24. That was very likely the plan. In fact, Koji appeared to be pretty far down the bullpen later when he was acquired...
  25. I wouldn’t mind if Pomeranz returned. When healthy, he’s much better than he showed last year. And he might be relatively cheap if the Sox do spend heavily on a closer like Kimbrel...
