  1. As long as they never contended. I couldn’t take another Bloom deadline…
  2. Think Campbell plays 2b or 1b in Worcester? The Sox know they cannot rely on ToRoGo at 1b all season, and dont have an in house candidate except the recently-promoted Blaze Jordan. If they don’t want to keep throwing rookies at the problems and hoping they stick, maybe this demotion was as much about Campbell getting some reps at a new position as it is about his limited offense. Kind of makes some sense when you realize he didn’t get demoted after his .360 OPS for the month of May. But he raised it about 300 points in June and got optioned…
  3. Especially when you consider apparently many teams felt Devers was the problem and the Sox were far from unreasonable. https://sports.yahoo.com/article/mlb-rumors-teams-were-appalled-095609428.html I do still get why fans are frustrated and consider this Betts 2.0. It’s not like any of us were going to hang out with Devers and our participation was limited solely to watching him crush hits for Boston. And just like with Betts, that’s gone and not replaced…
  4. Ive speculated on Story/Murphy trades before and feel they might be a good match. (BTV most definitely does not as it hates Trevor Story.) Assuming I’m right and they are a fair match, then the rest of that deal becomes Wong and an injured Winckowski for 1.5 years of one of the most dangerous right-handed bats in MLB. Absolutely no way Atlanta settles for that. Not even at gunpoint…
  5. Unless there is another move (Eaton down, Grissom up?), the only 2bs on the roster are Hamilton, Rafaela Toro, and Romy. Since Toro and Romy are handling 3b/1b in a platoon, that really just leaves Hamilton and Rafaela. So, Hamilton. With no platoon unless Coraputs Wong in there. (Wong does have MiLB experience at 2b from way back in his Dodger days.)
  6. Campbell is struggling but they want him to keep playing. No one cares if Hamilton or Eaton sit on the bench. If Abreu is activated, does this mean Rafaela to 2b?
  7. Abreu. Yoshida isnt eligible for activation until July 19th-ish…
  8. Even at 15-20, it’s still impressive to be that high on those lists. And it’s not s off the names above his are so readily available. Except maybe Rooker…
  9. Devers is a topflight hitter. In the last 3 years, he ranked 15th in wOBA and 20th in wRC+ among qualified hitters, and I was surprised he was that low. And I think it became more of a matter of giving more respect to the ones who finished above him. Who knew Brent Rooker was THAT good?
  10. I don’t think it was a matter of valuing Casas over Devers. It was a matter of Devers prioritizing his feelings over the needs of the team. When Casas went down, the Sox needed a 1b., and there wasn’t one on the horizon Save a couple AAAA options (one of whom, Toro, has been stellar so far) If Devers moved to first, it becomes easier to fill the DH role. Maybe they activate Yoshida. Maybe they call up Anthony sooner. But neither of those guys is an option for 1b…
  11. Soto was a rarity - one of the best active hitters reaching free agency at age 25. I think interest was genuine but there were too many wealthy suitors. And reportedly Cohen was NOT going to be overbid. I don’t fault them there. As for Alonso, he only solved problems once Casas got hurt. The Sox still had faith in Triston and weren’t out to replace him. If they were, Devers probably gets asked to play 1b in March…
  12. Didnt Ben once have to trade Marco Scutaro in order to afford Cody Ross? That’s a level of economic constraint DD didnt have…
  13. There were 3 people who opposed it from the start. Counting you. But Sale was 35 years old - same as as Price - and coming off four missed seasons. Plenty of Hall of Fame caliber pitchers have been in that position before and none have bounced back like Sale did. I can’t pretend I saw that coming and I don’t blame Breslow for not seeing it either…
  14. Mostly because this laundry list of questionable moves and hypotheses isnt related to actual strategy. I mean, are there really questions about why Sale was traded? I mean questions with foundations unrelated to hindsight…
  15. He was also given more financial leeway than the others, and might be getting judged on different criteria. Bloom is credited with a bust for Story, who certainly came to Boston on the heels of a successful career before being derailed by injuries. . Is Dombrowski’s signing of Price really any better? It’s basically the same narrative…
  16. None of which adds credibility to a SSS argument. The Yankees activated Giancarlo Stanton 3 games ago and have only scored two runs since. Is this statistical proof that adding slugging former MVPs can drag down your lineup? After all, they scored more than that in the previous 3 games…
  17. Huh? They low-balled Lester, reportedly due to concerns about his age. But that whole “dont sign pitchers over 30” philosophy was clearly gone by 2015 when they signed Price…
  18. When did they say they didn’t want Devers’ contract? They did say his contract came with certain obligations he refused to live up to, but that’s a very different thing altogether…
  19. They did at least abandoned that philosophy relatively quickly, giving the then-largest contract in team history to 31yo David Price. Of course that lead to a whole new arena of mistakes to learn from…
  20. I didn't say that. I think they do need a hitter quick. Yoshida is a talented hitter, but you don’t replace your Ferrari with a Chevy Equinox without a drop off in performance . Bottom line, offensive hit won’t be proven using a 5 game sample size that includes 2 games Devers played in…
  21. If you’re going to use stats this way, you take credibility away from other stat-based arguments. And you know that…
  22. I don’t think it’s fair to accuse Devers of tanking and sulking. He got off to a slow start, but that could easily be attributable to adjusting to his new role, which was effectively being asked to pinch hit 4 times a game every day. I can understand a mental adjustment there…
  23. Absolutely, AI can do a lot of things, but it cannot yet duplicate the level of indecision and waffling that Bloom brought to the organization…
