  1. The Marlins did the same thing with Carlis Delgado, but his expensive years were $12-15mill. If the plan was to dump him before the expensive years, it was a serious gamble. I mean, what if no one wanted him at that price? Or if an injury hurts him? If they didn’t want to pay him, wouldn’t it have made sense to trade him when he was still cheap?
  2. It is a little slanted in that article. I mean, it’s not solely because of a deal they give Kimbrel. They have 40 other contracts counting towards that amount...
  3. Not to mention the successes Dombrowski had in the past with no name pitchers at closer. Pitchers like Trevor Hoffman, Rob Nen, Matt Mantei, and Fernando Rodney, to name a few...
  4. I hope they didn’t decide to do it “for fun.” My thoughts are they concluded 1) bullpen pitching at current prices are bad investments (for baseball purposes) and 2) Dombrowski has a long history (with mixed results) of not spending on bullpens. That he saw his successor win a WS in Florida with his former acquisition Braden Looper at closer probably didn’t sway him against the idea...
  5. I don’t get why they cut off the spending. It could be something more along the lines of relief pitchers being the worst investment statistically? I could see that. Closers cost $15-18mill. Set up guys cost $7-9mill. And together they provide maybe 3 fWAR. So maybe the thought was to just not soend $22-27mill on maybe 3 fWAR worth of talent? I could that that logic being applied here, but if you try it, it helps to have a better plan for replacements than career minor league talent with fastballs that’s harder to control than kites in a hurricane...
  6. How many has it cost us so far? Chances are really good neither Runzler nor Ellington ever see Fenway...
  7. He’s not walking away from all that money. There’s a better chance he tracks you down next offseason and cuts you a check for 25mill than there is of him retiring just so DD can get somebody for the bullpen...
  8. DD is looking for the next Brasier. Runzler throws about 96 mph. Ellington is closer to 98-99 mph...
  9. As he is a professional he should be more accurate...
  10. Reyes might be able to see MLB innings this year...
  11. I know there’s no such thing as a bad minor league contract. But Runzler has throw 7 MLB innings since 2011. The Giants DFAd Derek Law today, who is far more intriguing than Runzler...
  12. I don’t think there has been an off-season this slow since 1868...
  13. Actually 9 teams have signed a free agent for longer than 2 years, per the MLBTR free agent tracker. So his count is off as that leaves 21 teams that haven’t...
  14. It is for a guy who can’t hit outside of Denver and can’t field his position...
  15. Has it really? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/04/rockies-extend-charlie-blackmon.html
  16. And a Met by February...
  17. K Was that so hard?
  18. Well we could talk about all the new faces in the clubhouse. I think the attendants staff is bringing on a new intern. I hope he works out. Also I hear they’re switching from Tide to Gain. I’m not so sure I like this. Tide was good enough last year; why mess with what’s working?
  19. Koji is a stretch at age 43. And Eckersley has already thrown a no hitter in MLB before Koji was even born...
  20. Koji didn’t even start pitching for the Sox until he was 38. Kimbrel’s desired contract this off-season that’s every team apparently thinks was too long would have only taken him through age 36...
  21. You’re right!! Career ERA is the best stat EVER!!! I can’t believe anyone even came up with other stats!!! Why it not only tells you how good a pitcher is, but it also does windows and makes a fine dessert topping!! And the best thing about it - it cannot be improved upon because it is solely based on pitcher ability!!! It’s so perfect, next to it perfection itself is a giant pile of poop!!!
  22. If the odds were something like Boston 45%, New York 30%, Tampa 20%, Others 5%, then you’re simply playing favorites by taking Boston over NY, but taking the field over Boston...
  23. February 1. Still unsigned. Think Philly got that offer in yet?
  24. But how much better are the Yankees and Rays? The Yankees finished EIGHT GAMES behind the Sox last year. Do your additions - which so far is just Paxton, Ottavino, LaMahieu and a half season of Britton - make up an eight game difference? Especially factoring in the losses of Robertson and at least a half season of Grigorius? Even if your adds make the Yankees four games better and the Sox (and only the Sox, because apparently Yankees never regress) are 3 games worse, that’s still not enough...
  25. And if we were to go to a Yankee board, all the enthusiasm would be grounded in reality, right?
