  1. In Florida. That’s not local to Boston...
  2. If Pedroia is on the DL, is a third catcher really a necessity here? The Sox are using Holt and Nunez to backup 6 positions, and if Pedroia is out, one of them is starting...
  3. You mean cut. Leon will be next to impossible to trade as there are plenty of similar players still available on the free agent market. Also Leon is really the best defensive catcher of the three. Swihart has the advantage of being the most versatile, but the Sox already have two other better supersubs on the roster. As the third best catcher and the third best super sub, he’s as redundant as it gets...
  4. How is Steven Pearce a local boy? He was born and grew up in Florida and went to college in South Carolina...
  5. To be fair, the other option was Middlebrooks...
  6. Probably. But then if the Sox really miscalculated their salary vs luxury tax last year, maybe they exercise a little prudence and wait a week or two...
  7. Least of my concerns. If a player is going to start a new position,1b is probably the easiest one to learn. Probably about half of the starting first basemen in MLB played another position in the minors and in many cases, in the majors as well...
  8. You might need to make up your mind here. While no one has questioned the signing of Pearce over a reliever more than me, you were predicting he’d be worth a much higher AAV on a multi year deal. And it still leaves other options. If, as you’re suggesting, Chavis can replace Pearce, you are in effect saying Chavis should produce equal to a multi year higher AAV contract player. Doesn’t that mean Chavis should have significant trade value? Maybe enough to trade for a reliever?
  9. Certainly true. Although he’s an odd hedge against Porcello with his ridiculous durability. Sale has expressed an interest in an extension, but it likely won’t be a team-friendly one and certainly won’t happen until the Sox are deep enough into the season that it isn’t counted against this year’s tax limits. If at all...
  10. So you think it’s a bad idea to maybe try and put a few MLB-caliber players and sell a few tickets in the next 5 seasons?
  11. Actually quite often better. The store brand is often made by one of the name brand suppliers (in many cases the size or shape of the container gives it away). But the store itself might have tighter specification and more stringent quality requirements than the name brand. Stores can ask for a better product and demand it for less money and then pass the savings on to you, the customer. And that’s the story about why the Red Sox signed Jenrry Mejia...
  12. Did the improvements the Yankees made make up an 8 game deficit?
  13. It’s entirely possible one of those people thought the line was for an ATM and another was waiting to mug him...
  14. Or the owners will tighten their collective purse strings even more and off-seasons will be endlessly tedious, salaries will deflate further, and the average retirement age will be younger...
  15. No need to perpetuate this. Your second sentence was a nasty and needless thought...
  16. I think it’s just Dombrowski being sporting. If he did build a killer bullpen, what chance would the Yankees even have this season?
  17. But the point is the NFL glamorizes it’s draft as a marketing tool. They televise it and show highlights of every draftee to give fans the impression their awful teams are no longer awful. But really at the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of college kids getting jobs. The dramatized and emphasized impact? Not gonna happen, even for the teams with the best grades. The baseball equivalent is the off-season. Remember how excited you were when you heard the Sox acquired Pedro? Or Adrian Gonzalez? (Some of you were. Don’t deny it now. We don’t blame you.). THAT is what the MLB off-season is supposed to bring. Cincinnati came in last in 2018. They’re making moves everywhere. Ditto Texas. It might not work, but they’re trying. But Baltimore?WTF?!?!?! Worst team in MLB and they haven’t added a single major leaguer?!?!? They’re an embarrassment...
  18. They do. The off-season after that firesale, there were pictures of their line for season tickets when they went on sale. Four people. Four. My 11 year olds girls’ softball team draws better than that!! By a lot!!
  19. Or somebody reaching an incentive clause. I will say it might be better to have Ty Buttrey right now. And I was never a Ty Buttrey fan, despite his awesomely smooth name...
  20. ... until pitchers and catchers report. If there are any more roster changes, hopefully they happen soon...
  21. Exactly!!! Unless there is no spending limit and DD is just operating under his own constraints. Then it makes sense. It might not be the smartest approach, but at least I can see why...
  22. If he waits until July, he can get a $6mill reliever and only have $3mill count against the limit. Pat Neshek, for example. But before that happens, he can give a shot to any of Jenrry Mejia, Dan Runzler, Brian Ellington, Domingo Tapia, Colten Brewer, Daniel Schlereth, Carson Smith, or Zack Putnam. Or one of the draftees, like Lakins, Poyner, or Feltman...
  23. If there is a spending limit - which is not unreasonable - one has to wonder why Steven Pearce became a higher priority than re-stocking the bullpen. Unless the plan to reset after 2019. Pearce took a one year deal, so he has no impact. DD probably (correctly) figured he would not be able to get Kimbrel or Miller or Britton or Ottavio etc. on a one year deal. But even then, Strickland and Allen both took one year deals. Which makes me think that he prioritized Pearce over the bullpen simply because he did not plan to spend on the bullpen. Like I said before, this is not a new approach for him...
  24. How would you propose handling undrafted players like Warren Moon or Joe Jacoby or Kurt Warner?
  25. Or... he does have carts Blanche and he figured the bullpen was the best place to save money, especially long term money, while keeping himself under $246mill and not inhibiting resigning Sale and/or Bogaerts and/or Betts and possibly extending Benintendi. All while repeating. He does have to keep the future in mind too. The problem is, this approach has burned him in the past...
