Nationals sign Fernando Rodney. Not that this guy was a surefire upgrade, but it makes me wonder what it would take to get Dombrowski to act at all. And especially in a situation with. NO RISK. Sure Rodney could suck. As could Kontos or Rzepczynski or any other reliever on waivers. So? Release them. Done. Not even a significant financial risk...

Can/Should the Red Sox Blow Up the Roster?

So the plan to “blow up the roster” involves trading away most of the potential free agents and giving away ERod and Barnes? So the idea is that people who can’t handle two months of not winning think the Sox need to go into a rebuilding mode, which typically takes longer than two months... -

Sure, although bear in mind Beeks netted the Sox an oft-injured mid-rotation starter for only 3 months. What do people think Dalbec is worth?

Sale has held hitters to a .655 OPS with men on base and a .669 with RISP. Also a .646 OPSA in Late and Close situations. In High Leverage situations, his OPSA is .794 in 42 PA. Most of this is carried by singles, as he has only allowed 1 HR in these at bats and has an 18/2 K/BB ratio. (Although he has 3 hit batsmen). In his 12 starts, he has faced the Yankees, Astros and Rays 5 times! (Sox are 1-4 in those games.) He was also victimized by very poor run support in some of his favorable match ups, such as being on the wrong end of an Aaron Brooks 1-0 shutout. Yes, Aaron Brooks.

Not the point. The point is baseball did well because of the enhanced home runs and record challenges at the time. Just like how every game in America switched over to watch Pete Rose bat once his streak reached 40 games...

While I agree this team needs a reliever, quoting just those numbers is misrepresenting it. The Sox have 12 saves and 28 holds against 9 blown saves. Since a blown save could have been either a save or a hold. The team that leads MLB in blown saves with 15 is the Mets. You know, the team that took the contract of Robinson Cano so they could acquire Edwin Diaz. And also signed Jeurys Familia and Justin Wilson...

Exact same thing. Resting a player is not playing him. So you want proof that rested is better than tired?

The only reason to make Sale the closer is they never win his starts anyway. But no. Even if the Sox had 1998’s Mariano Rivera out there, they’d only have 2 more wins. They’ve won 3 starts from Sale. And considering they’ve only scored more than 4 runs in a Sale start twice in 12 games - and they scored 5 and 6 runs in those games - it’s not really a guarantee they can simply plug in anyone else and get the same or better results...

Home runs are good for business, as we all saw in 1998. Chasing untouchable records is as well. MLB would absolutely LOVE a player to challenge DiMaggio’s hitting streak or come close to hitting .400...

The only day off since May 16 was yesterday’s rainout and the team got a couple really short starts, one from illness, that have helped tax a fairly mediocre bullpen? I think that’s a factor.

So you’re arguing for evidence that the players should not get any rest for the next two months? You want proof that rested is better than tired?

And misleading. They’re certainly not good, but you really can’t argue that closers need some special skill set and support it by saying all blown saves are equal...

In some cases, you don’t need to give them a try. If the Sox had signed Ottavino instead of Pearce, for example. I’m getting more on with Brewer, whose ERA is deceptively bad. But my confidence in Brasier has plummeted and I’m starting to think his 30 IP last season was not only a complete illusion, but fooled Dombrowski so much that he figured he never had to pay for a bullpen arm again (which is his dream)..

So championship teams aren’t allowed to have injuries? Because most of those names weren’t even on the opening day roster...
