I would be very surprised if there was a full blown rebuild. It won't solve anything and would be too costly, assuming it actually works. We all know "worst to first" really isn't some huge step. It can be done quickly. We also all know (especially Mariner fans) that rebuilds are a crapshoot more likely to keep a team in the basement than build a champion. The Sox have a good foundation. This team still has a lot of talent. But if they can no longer spend money like drunken Kardashians and have to dial back a bit, that shouldn't be a problem. This is MLB. The jump from worst to first is going from a 40% winning percentage to a 60% winning percentage. And the Sox aren't even close to a 40% team...

I don't know how Ortiz qualifies under those requirements. If the role of the GM involved hitting a dramatic ninth inning home run, I might agree. But it's more than just baseball knowledge nowadays. You don't see many former players being hired for GM roles any more. In fact, we have seen multiple new GM hires who were young enough to still be playing...

Sounds like some sort of honorary thing. I think Lucchino gets a bad rap on message boards as some guy who knows nothing about baseball, but he is a career sports exectuive with World Series rings and a Super Bowl ring and a Final Four championship under his belt. He knws what he is doing. But I don't know if stepping down was his idea or not. Why do so mid-season? And was it a "lucky break" for the Sox that the Tigers had recently fired his replacement?

I think it's a coincidence here. Exactly how much positive PR did they get from Papi's visit? Looking at this thread vs the "Sox Fire Dombrowski Thread", it's fairly easy to see which event overshadowed the other...

If we wanted a GM to make the Sox 26 games worse over the course of one season, we would have kept Dombrowski...

The Sox came in last place 3 times in a 4 season stretch and didn't have some crazy off-season housecleaning. The changed the FO and unloaded a few deals that were not working out. They even waited as long as possible before moving the tradable commodities. JUst because Jacko wants to see the Sox unload Rodriguez and Devers and all the good cheap rtalent while retaining the big contracts doesn't mean it's going to happen. And just becuase I think the Sox need to reset and non-tender JBJ doesn't mean that is going to happen either. And Alex Speier probably has a better idea than any of us, but he doesn't know either. There's no way he can. We don't have anyone making those decisions yet. At the end of the day,we here are just a bunch of people making speculative guesses on message boards with varying degrees of information and experience. I don't mind engaging in that type of conversation, ok I enjoy it, but it doesn't mean much in reality. I could say the only way the Sox can get out of this is to have a pagan sacrifice offering up the live flesh of Bobby Dalbec to the Gods of Launch Angle. But it doesn't mean it's going to happen. And I don't think the Sox are going into a rebuild. "Rebuilding" is a euphemism for "being cheap". The Sox might cut a significant chunk of payroll, but they still won't be cheap...

The headline uses the word “unlikely.” The article makes no definitive statements about the future of either player, and there are no references to sources, not even unnamed ones. It’s just an article about Sox contracts and payroll and what Speier thinks needs to be done here to fix this situation financially...
