  1. As bad as the entire Castillo contract situation is, it’s not like the Sox are alone here. The Giants, for example, are LOADED with bad, immovable contracts for aging and rapidly declining players. I’d be hesitant to label the Sox “idiots” over one deal that didn’t work out...
  2. AA is probably the most important step, when all the three levels of A ball get condensed into one league and the talent attrition gets maximized. AAA is barely developmental anymore and is for stashing minor league free agents and 40 man roster overspill. Why skip the most important step with Duran? Stay the course with Duran, who is still only on A ball. If the Sox can find an actual MLB-caliber reserve outfielder, he can go to Pawtucket and replace, well, anyone. But Brentz should really be the first one gone anyway. Not Castillo...
  3. Is he really? The outfielders in Pawtucket are Castillo, Gorkys Hernandez, Bryce Brentz, and Cole Sturgeon (and maybe Sam Travis). It’s not like they have some overcrowding issue there that’s blocking everyone below. Which one isn’t expendable?
  4. When did that happen when teams signed talented players and stashed them in the minors?
  5. He gets the same money whether he is playing in MLB, playing in AAA, or playing Nintendo RBI Baseball at home...
  6. So maybe we’re in agreement. Dombrowski doesn’t like him because his contract it too expensive for a fourth outfielder...
  7. It’s ok. He was genuflecting as he typed it...
  8. No. Reportedly Dombrowski left Castillo’s showcase, citing him as a “fourth outfielder.” This was before anyone signed him...
  9. As Benjamin Franklin famously said “There are 3 certainties in life. Death, taxes, and Troy Tulowitzki sustaining injuries that keep him off the field.”
  10. As I’ve been saying, he’s the best outfielder in the organization after Betts, Bradley, Benintendi, and Martinez...
  11. Probably. But reportedly Dombrowski is not a fan and will likely just let him walk...
  12. It’s a safe bet he gets non-tendered...
  13. We have 3 pitchers. We need more position players...
  14. Aaron Bummer
  15. In spite of the fact that the A’s have probably faced numerous RHP on the road...
  16. Dombrowski drafted Porcello and is very likely a fan, although he did trade him to Boston. But the big issue with a Porcello extension is cash. As the Sox have already commmitted about $100mill to Price, Sale, Bogaerts, and Martinez, and the ever-looming Betts’ contract figures to top all of them, there might not be room in the budget for Porcello...
  17. Even if the Sox pay half or three quarters or 100%, if the other team adds Castillo to their 40 man roster, his money becomes eligible for the luxury tax. And there isn’t anything Castillo can do about it. Not only would the MLBPA strongly discourage him trying to get out of his deal, but he has no incentive to. The only way out would be to announce his retirement and void the contract. But then he can’t do that and just become a free agent immediately. He probably has to wait a full season to “unretire” and become eligible to play again. At that point, all he is doing is costing himself money. He’s not even expediting the process. I admit I am not sure if there is a provision in the CBA about retiring and unreturing to be a free agent, but there must be. Otherwise we would have seen at least one dissatisfied player “retire” to get out of an unsatisfactory contract by now...
  18. MLB doesyhave the buyout provisions that the NBA has. Castillo has another full year of AAA left I’m him. He actually looks like he belongs in MLB, but that’s won’t happen. Even if the Sox could trade, they’d likely have to eat all the salary, which adds him to luxury tax calculations. Ditto if they release him. The real tragedy for the Sox is, he’s very likely the fifth best outfielder in the entire organization right now and could be useful to the parent club. But it flat out isn’t going to happen despite the Sox complete lack of outfield depth. The primary beneficiary of Castillo being in CBA purgatory would be either Gorkys Hernandez or Cole Sturgeon, both of whom represent a significant drop in talent...
  19. The A’s recalled outfielder Skye Bolt. Not sure if he has been mentioned on this thread yet, but he needs to be...
  20. Marte has two option years left at $12.5mill and $13.5mill. As cheap as the Pirates are, I think they can still afford him...
  21. None of which changes the fact that, despite JBJ’s offensive struggles, no one on this team (or organization) has made a good enough argument for themselves to be starting over him...
  22. And his wife, Incontinentia Buttocks...
  23. No need. He’s opting out. I read it on here...
