He is not known for his offense. His numbers in NPB for Hiroshma were nothing great, and I doubt MLB would be any different. While you might be right, sometimes you have to take into account the Dan Duquette Factor. DD came to boston with a history of winning with a low budget and replenishing his farm by dealing off vets with 5 years for more farm pieces. When he came to Boston, having an ectual working budget drastically changed his MO. Certainly we shouldn't expect Bloom to be nearly as extreme, but I do expect some differences. If he does make some deals like you say, one player on the block might be the positionless Chavis...

I don’t know the Astros budget, but does adding Greinke possibly hamper taking on Betts and Eovaldi?

The question that arises - can the Sox reset and still keep Mooikie? And who can they realisitically trade to make that happen? To me, trading Price, Sale or Eovaldi is very liekly to clear only a small sum of space, because either the Sox or going to pay a big chunk or take back another loathsome contract. Would they have to deal Bogaerts? Can Martinez actually be traded? Should either go? If they keep the status quo, I expect the status quo, or possibly worse...

Do posting fees count towards the luxury tax? While I doubt the Sox get too involved in free agency, if those fees do not count, they do give teams exclusive negotiating rights that prevent bidding wars...

Oh that was a massive overpay, especially since the Cubs really weren’t struggling with their closer. But I don’t think you can count on another GM giving up that much. Compare it to what the Dodgers gave up for a half year of Machado....

I expect a few trades. Bloom made 65 trades since joining the Rays. Dombrowski made 21 in that same timeframe. In fact, I expect Bloom to make a couple trades with the Rays...

1. It was a phrase before Breaking Bad. 2. It was not just a line; it was the title of the episode. 3. There is a difference between changing course and seeing just what happens until halfway through the season. Put it this way. Does “going all in one last time” with Betts really seem like an option now that we know Jake Marisnick is on the table? Isn’t that like going all in when you have 2-7 off suit in the pocket?

I love Betts, but he isn’t the single greatest factor in 2020. The Sox can keep him, “go for it”, and still flop. Sure they can wait until July to deal him for a prospect and some table scraps, lose him forever to free agency, and somehow hope 2021 and beyond will be different. Deal him now, get the best offer in a trade, and go hard after him in 2021. The Sox chances of re-signing him long term are still probably greater than their chances of another title in 2020 if they keep him. And as for “deal him in July if,” that’s a half-measure. And half measures avail nothing

Right. What I was referring to was not letting his ABs vs LHP be an obstacle. In fact, I’m all for giving players like Pederson reps vs LHP. Sometimes these skill gaps come from way too much platooning...

Now I do look for Bloom to raid the Rays’ farm system for maybe some unprotectables. My guess is he does a deal soon for someone like Garrett Whitley or Lucius Fox (played by Morgan Freeman)...

I like Pederson, too. And I think the “can’t hit lefties” thing is overplayed. But he’ll be making like $5mill next year and isn’t likely to be an option unless someone gets dealt...
