    You do realize the Dodgers also took Price, right? Even with the Red Sox paying half, that significantly lowers the return for Bets. If the Sox wanted more for Betts, the best Avenue would have been to try to deal Price separately. Which they did, to no avail...

    That’s a massive assumption. There is not a team in MLB that doesn’t upgrade right field by acquiring Betts. So why would these teams sit idly by while the Dodgers and Padres made sure Betts’ availability reached every headline? Especially after the Graterol physical gave them all a second chance. What suitors were going to come around if Bloom was even more patient?

    I do understand the Orioles know more about trading for prospects than either of us and are well aware of the risks of just grabbing multiple players over one or two good ones. It’s not always about what you know; it’s about knowing what you don’t know...

    Whether or not it was a bad deal will be resolved in time. It may very well turn out that way. More of these “stars for younger talent” deals turn into Machado trades than Bartolo Colon trades. The question was, was it the best deal Bloom could have gotten?

    But there was. Trading Mookie in the off-season is more appealing, because a team gets an additional draft pick if/when they cannot extend him. The draft pick disappears come opening day. That pick absolutely makes Betts more appealing, as they know they can recoup at least some of the minor league/young MLB talent they deal for Betts...

    Clearly you are unfamiliar with my recent string of Baltimore jokes. By the way, which aspect of Baltimore geography that you are highlighting makes you the expert on their trading process? Which street that you drove down told you the Orioles wanted more bad prospects than good ones and that the Orioles do not understand prospect attrition?

    Is this the same Scott Boras who waited out the JD Martinez negotiations to get $100 mill less than his asking price? Waiting only works if someone else gets interested and is willing to pay more. But if Bloom waited until April 1, Betts’ value plummets. There was a hard deadline...

    If teams were not in on Betts when he was all over the news, they were not going to jump in later, even if someone got hurt. Do people really think a team like the Braves was watching this go down and thought “we absolutely have the pitching prospects to outbid these guys. But we don’t need Mookie right now. Let’s hold off and see if Nick Markakis gets hurt.”

    So you’re saying they turned down better prospects to get more bad ones? Did the Orioles front office tell you that? They might not have the best farm system, but it is a safe bet the Orioles’ front office is well aware of prospect attrition rates and how few become actual major leaguers. They took the best deal they could get...

    Well, there was. Teams are already reporting to Spring Training. When was the right time? What if no opportunity arises in March? And once the season starts, Betts' value plummets due to the loss of the compensatory draft pick. In July? Position players just don't fetch those kinds of returns in July trades. Know how many good pitching prospects the Orioles got for Machado? None. They really only got one decent prospect, and even his luster has already worn off. If the Sox did no deal Betts now, the return would have only decreased. If the Sox couldn't get what they wanted for him now, they were never going to.

    The idea of dealing Betts and taking back Myers was always a laughable one. It was like the Padres really only wanted to see if Bloom would do it. Even if the Sox received half of Myers' contract, the Padres still received Betts basically for free along with a draft pick, gave up a couple of the non-elite prospects and unloaded their heavily paid fifth outfielder. The Sox didn't get under the limit and took on another deadweight contract, and all that to get maybe one reasonbly good prospect from the Padres? Complete rip off. At least put Gore on the table, San Diego.

    Once they off-loaded Price, even at half of the value, and Betts, the need to deal JBJ dropped precipitously...

    Yes, but only if no one else wanted him for more. Once they non-tender him, he is a free agent. Now they could have offered him 2 yrs / $12mill instead of tendering him arbitration, But no way was Bradley's agent ever going to advise him to accept that...

    Maybe. But I read somewhere he was not much at any of the positions the Dodgers tried him at. Granted, they also have better prospects than him at C, 2B, and 3B...

    I do. But only when they involve really big contracts or medium sized ones for oft-injured SPs...
