  1. Kemp is a good one. I think Jim Bunning (Baseball HOF and Senator) is at least Bradley’s equal here. Although Bradley was a Princeton grad, while Bunning only went to Xavier...
  2. It also depends on how we feel about college football players, like Gerald Ford...
  3. Yes. He’s a clear mention on both lists. How about a ruling on Jesse Ventura?
  4. Did not know Dryden entered politics. What did he do?
  5. No idea how I forgot about Jim Bunning. HOF pitcher. Republican Senator from a Kentucky...
  6. Didn’t Steve Largent serve in the House for Oklahoma?
  7. Steve Carlton, too...
  8. Much like show business, a lot of athlete's used their fame to enter the world of politics. Who weer some of the more successful ones in both venues? I'll start with one I mentioned on the other thread - Byron "Whizzer " White. White was the Heisman runner up after leading the nation in pretty much every rushing category for Colorado State, and then spent 3 years in the NFL. After that, he went into law and worked his way up to being a Supreme Court Justice. Others?
  9. Bump was the son of Maury Wills, the former Dodger great who had the SB record before Lou Brock. Bump's real name was Elliott, which is why he went by Bump...
  10. I like your enthusiasm, but a lot of those threads do exist already.
  11. What was wrong with Brian Downing? He was a pretty underappreciated player with possibly the most bizarre batting stance in MLB history...
  12. Well, we have no idea how grumpy you might b with the press, either
  13. If the season is going nowhere anyway, to me the question here is "why not?" At the very least, the Sox should have though to stockpile potentially tradable pieces at the deadline. However, position players rarely get any real value back at that point, so you need some really, really good ones capable of making a difference to make it worthwhile...
  14. Not sure my idea of twisted is to want to see Yasiel Puig charge a few mounds and scream at a few fans. To me, "twisted" is wanting to watch Ryan Weber and Brian Johnson start 40% of the Sox games...
  15. If anything, full bore crazy Puig makes it worthwhile to tune in. He would be a much bigger reason to watch than a rotation that includes both Brian Johnson and Ryan Weber...
  16. Boring, but tradition is tradition. In that case, I'm done. Unless you have better names than Polar Bears and Big-Eared Bats, which is flat out not likely. I need to get John Henry on the phone ASAP...
  17. Once Sale went down, the whole "clubhouse cancer" argument became completely irrelevant...
  18. So to update, if I was given the chance to rebrand a few teams in the Sox minor league system Stays the same: Portland Sea Dogs Greenville Drive Lowell Spinners Changes: Worcester Polar Bears Salem Big-Eared Bats (Or possibly Same Virginia Big-Eared Bats, as that's the actual name of the state bat. Yes, Virginia has a state bat.) Needs help: Gulf Coast Red Sox
  19. Yeah Armageddon!!
  20. Actually maybe not. There's no one left worth signing for that money, and there maybe no season anyway. But if we are playing hindsight, Kevin Pillar over Yasiel Puig is confusing to me, even with Puig being more expensive...
  21. Eck stole the Human Rain Delay nickname from Hargrove, the original owner of it. Hargrove was the worst. After every pitch, he would step out, adjust his gloves, knock dirt from his cleats, adjust his helmet, step out and take 3 practice swings, step back in the box, adjust his glove, and adjust his helmet. And to make it worse, he was not exactly Mike Greenwell when it came to pitch selection. Hargrove was a very patient hitter who was frequently near the top of the league in walks. And to make it even worse than that, he frequently batted leadoff. So he did this 5 times a game. Hargrove's reputation was so bad that in 1984 - and no idea why I remember this - the Twins were looking for a left-handed hitting 1B and acquired Pat Putnam from Seattle over Hargrove. One of their players quipped "Good. Now we can play 3 hour games instead of 4 hour ones."
  22. If he was treated with antibiotics and it worked, then, no. It does seem like a lot of people who were sick in December/January think they had a virus that we have no evidence was even in the country at the time...
  23. An anti-Mike Hargrove rule has long been needed. I remember wanting a snack during Sox-Rangers games and thinking “I’ll just wait until Hargrove comes up.” Because I knew I had time to walk to the store, pick something out, and walk back home before Bump Willis came to bat...
  24. Yes, 1884 was a blast. I had Matt Kilroy on my fantasy baseball team that year. Totally rocked that league...
