  1. 1. The Cubs trade was not the norm. Since the Cubs had last won World Series prior, Arizona was granted statehood, seen major cities spring up, gotten a baseball team AND WON A WORLD SERIES!! For the Cubs, Torres/Chapman was allowed. But for any other team it would have been stupid. Like Bagwell trade stupid. 2. Nick Yorke graduated high school last year. It might be a tad early to crown him Second Baseman of the Future. And even if he is, who plays there until he arrives? 3. Trading Jeter Downs is not a horrible idea on its own. He wasn’t even Bloom’s first choice in the deal in which he was acquired. But trading Downs for a rental would be stupid. Most two month rental players/pitchers can be had for a lot less than a consensus top 100 prospect. A lot less…
  2. The Cubs we’re trying to win for the first time since Teddy Roosevelt was president and the USA only had 46 states. I think they can be excused for going overboard in that trade and we can all agree the circumstances make it the exception, not the rule…
  3. No. I was pointing out that number of fans are irrelevant, as in not in the standings. You know, the numbers that matter…
  4. Oh. Well I have to disagree with him there too. I see no point in bringing up a prospect to sit on an MLB bench. Those spots on the bench are for underperformers. Top prospects should be starting when they get to MLB…
  5. What bench are the Sox’ good prospects sitting on?
  6. Exactly. He’s Jarren Duran. He had more power than Putin!! He has more speed than - I dunno - El Chapo!? That work? If James Bond played baseball, he’d be Duran. Jarren Duran…
  7. Guerrero was hardly “instant impact” with his .772 OPS last year. He wasn’t bad, but he was certainly less than many expected…
  8. The obvious reason to talk to Lawler now is to see if he also might sign underslot…
  9. Oh my point was it's a bit hypocritical to gripe that Renfroe struggled over a short period but ignore than Duran did too
  10. Right. Casas is in AA Aand doing OK. But unlike Duran he is also a guy where service time matters. Ockimey is just not a major leaguer. He should be proud of himself for getting further in the minors than most players go. But he isn't likely to go any further...
  11. See what Bloom and Cora did!! They left Duran in Worcester too long and he got hurt because of it!!!
  12. Duran is 5 for 20 in July with 1 extra base hit. Not sure how he is an improvement. I think some fans are desperately fabricating reasons to mess with success....
  13. I'm not real sold the Sox need any emergency bats from the farm right now, except maybe a 1B. That they don't have above A ball. So nothing they have...
  14. Or he might look at Groome and think "Well it was nice to get like 115 IP out of him in 5 years. At this pace, he might be ready for MLB by, say, the 2055 season." You know. Like I do...
  15. I have brought this up on the draft thread, that Bloom is a bit of a wild card. But I think it is perfectly relevant and I think he picks someone slated at 4 on 0 mock drafts so far (including - nay, especially - mine)...
  16. ... unless it worked out
  17. Seems like you are prioritizing Duran over the current (winning!) team. The Sox don't need Duran right now. And there is no guarantee he can help beyond maybe being a pinch runner. Now when someone gets hurt or starts to actually struggle for a prolonged period, then maybe we see Duran...
  18. The "deadline" is the media concoction. Every year, they will look at some team and say "Why didn't the Jellyfish make a move? Why didn't the Buffaloes trade away for the future?" And fans buy into it. And the focus on such a small window. How many times have we seen a team go make a deal on, say, July 2, and do nothing on July 30/31st some ESPN bonehead is asking about their inactivity? And then some fans actually buy into it!!
  19. You're using the 2019 standings? Seriously? The Rays finished 12 games ahead of the Sox that year...
  20. The problem is the “middle” sample is about the same as the first and last samples combined…
  21. Injuries are likely to be a bigger factor than cuts and DFAs…
  22. He’s average to below average, yes. He’s not a guy you sign to turn your team around. But there are a lot of worse pitchers in the league and replacing him isn’t going to necessarily mean you improve. He might get released at some point this year, but if it means more innings from Yacksel Rios or Colten Brewer or maybe even Phillips Valdez, it might not necessarily be a good thing…
  23. The NFL actually counts on the drafts for ticket sales for some teams. When you draft first and suck, that high pick is somehow treated like a marketable glimmer of hope. MLB just can’t do that, since many players that get drafted are still years away…
  24. I’m more of a “they mean nothing until they get to AA” kind of guy….
  25. But if you have 3-4 seasons in MLB facing actual Major League pitchers, don’t you think you might find it a tad insulting that some kid whose never faced pitching at a higher level than 12th grade is getting more money than you? I get how the system works, but these negotiations have to be rough/delicate on small market GMs…
