Pitch clock, yes. It’s been in the rule book for decades. Why not just enforce it? The shift is unpopular, but it’s just a defensive alignment. It’s a strategy. Are we going to keep banning strategies? Maybe baseball should ban the hit and run play as well? How about MLB also bans having corner infielders guard the lines late in games, too? And infielders “cheating” up the middle for double play depth? These players are also out of position! Ban those strategies!! Why end with just the shift?

MLB seems to like to outlaw strategies and not obvious flaws. At least they finally decided allowing all 40 players on the active roster for one month really caused more problems than it solved…

The relative competition aspect is true. But even now, there is a large percentage of the current 1200 with weak fundamentals. That percentage is only likely to get bigger. And while the greater number of pitchers with weak control might be offset by the greater number with weaker plate discipline, I think overall that would lead to a weaker product overall. I mean, if you already don’t like walks and strikeouts, this change won’t excite you much…

No kidding. The shift has been used for over 100 years. The “Williams Shift” predates Ted Williams by nearly 30 years. If you want teams to shift less, that’s up to the hitters, not the owners…

Players were going to optimize launch angles whether or not there was a shift. What’s MLB’s next target? Banning 0-2 pitches out of the zone? Hey if the batter lays off, it’s just a waste of time and slows the pace of play…

I think he means the set of owners as a whole. Get 30 new owners and there will still be some good, some bad, and some teams will benefit from the change while some suffer. But the overall net effect will be nil. Now if you replace the 1200 rostered players, the differences might be more noticeable…
