  1. Is Castillo really a clueless airhead or simply just not that good?
  2. The strike outs don't bother me; that's physical. Mental errors like forgetting the number of outs or sitting in the clubhouse on snapchat during a game do bother me. You would think he'd be lapping it all up on his first trip to a major league dugout, not lounging in the clubhouse during a pennant race. If he's that disconnected, there is a problem.
  3. If true (and I've seen nothing other than mvp saying it), it does put him in the running for airhead status. I would hope that Señor Ortiz has had a chat or 2 with him. If he won't listen to Big Papi, then he is definitely an airhead. I would also consider sending him home if incidents like this continue. This is, of course, assuming the report is true.
  4. Ground ball hit in a good spot. It happens. I'd be much more worried if it had been a hard line drive.
  5. Maybe 7 days off was too long. Maybe his innings are catching up with him. Or it was just one of "those" games. Who can tell with pitchers?
  6. Sox next day off is September 26. Leon isn't going to start (or even play) every game until then. Now why Hanigan tonight I have no idea, although with catchers taking the beating they do, there could be some nagging little thing that a day off would help get Leon back closer to 100% (I don't think any player is 100% at this point of the schedule). Pure speculation on that, though.
  7. You must have missed the part where I said "I'm not comparing Moncada with Mays". Of course the situations are not analogous. My point was if an all-time great can struggle in his first couple weeks in the big leagues, we really do owe it to Moncada to give him a little time. Most people saw that; somehow you didn't.
  8. Several years ago, te Giants brought up a kid who proceeded to start his career 0-12 and 1-26. 660 or so homers later, Willie Mays was elected to the Hall of Fame. I'm not comparing Moncada to Mays, but patience people.
  9. So in other words you are looking to see them lose the last 20 games of the season. Because other than Farrell himself deciding to quit or him getting caught molesting collies, that's the only way he will not be the manager next year.
  10. The last time the Sox had a 20 game winner was 2007, when Josh Beckett accomplished it. The time before that was Curt Schilling in 2004. As I recall, those were a pair of rather successful seasons for the team. Let's hope history repeats itself.
  11. Saw something last week saying they might send him on a rehab to Lowell or Salem to get a few ABs before activating him. Lowell was eliminated from their playoffs yesterday, but Salem is still in the Carolina League playoffs. Might be feasible if they make the finals there.
  12. That's the wild-card game. I'm talking about a tiebreaker game for the second wild card spot. If you want a more recent example, in 2013, the Rays and Rangers tied for the second wild-card spot. The Rays finished 92-71, beating the Rangers in game 163 and qualifying for the wild-card game.
  13. The one game playoff is considered a part of the regular season (e.g., the 1978 Red Sox' final record was 99-64 and the Yankees' was 100-63); the roster rules that exist today would be in effect for it. The wild card "series" would have playoff roster rules.
  14. Saw something that said they may send him on a rehab to Lowell and/or Salem for a few ABs before reactivating him; I guess those clubs are in their league's playoffs.
  15. Very possible. Bogaerts has started (and played in) 134 of the Sox' 138 games this year. OTOH he basically did the same thing last season (played in 156 games, starting 154) so it's not like he's never played this much before; he did very well down the stretch in 2015. His career splits show August has been a rough month for him: April .281/.366/.387/.752 May .339/.388/.502/.889 June .261/.299/.381/.679 July .302/.337/.417/.753 Aug .240/.291/.313..604 Sep .306/.352/.459/.810 So hopefully he gets back closer to his historical September numbers down the stretch.
  16. Question: How do you handle the staff down the stretch? Do you keep with the rotation as is or do you send Price and Porcello every 5th day (off days could affect this) and pencil in the other 3 in between? The former gives Price, Porcello, Pomeranz and ERod 5 starts each with Buchholz/Wright getting 4. It also means Buchholz/Wright would pitch a potential Monday game in case of a tie for the final wildcard playoff spot, but puts Price in line to pitch the Tuesday one-game wild card playoff game. The latter gives Price 6 starts, Porcello 5, with Pomeranz, ERod and Buchholz splitting 13 games (I assume Pomeranz would get 5 and the others 4 each). One of them would get a potential Monday game with Porcello set up for a Tuesday game.
  17. He is doing remarkable Pedro Cerrano imitation.
  18. As of right now (12:20 CDT September 2) he's not even on the 40 man roster. I just looked at the Red Sox site; after having 39 names on it for all of August, it now has 40 names (unless I am completely missing something), none of which are Moncada. So that means somebody has to go to add Moncada (and someone else has to go for LHP Robby Scott, who is supposed to be "selected" from Pawtucket and brought up as well). Kelly and Marrero have been added to the expanded active roster already.
  19. FYI, Kimbrel threw 22 on Tuesday. That's a fairly high number. Had he thrown 12 or 14, I would agree with you. JF didn't want to use Tazawa. That's why he kept Abad in as long as he did. It would help the manager out a lot if he had guys who come in and get the needed outs 9/10 times. Unfortunately, it seems that with this pen it's a 50-50 proposition.
  20. Yep. For starters, they mean a little more over time (as the vagaries of run and bullpen support even out over the years). They certainly meant a lot more back when starters routinely went 9 innings unless they were pinch hit for.
  21. Tazawa poaches a win from a more deserving Ross Jr.
  22. Just be glad style points don't count in baseball.
  23. As a right handed hitter, how the hell do you foul a 97 mph fastball to 3rd?
  24. He seems to go after the first pitch a lot in those situations, in stark contrast to his normal approach.
