  1. You know, we wax about how great Vasquez is defensively but he lets far too many balls like that get by him. Got to knock that down. It wsn't that hard a play.
  2. When you see this, it's hard to believe Big Papi never hit 3 in a game.
  3. Lot's of 3-2 counts. 7 Ks. He only walked 2 (one on 4 pitches that looked semi-intentional to Judge). The Yankees fouled off a lot of 2 strike pitches. There were a couple of 8 pitch ABs, a 9 pitch one and a 12 pitch one. There wasn't a lot of solid contact overall by Yankee hitters. There were at least 3 infield hits and a bloop. He wasn't sharp but he hung in there.
  4. Rutledge was not likely to drive him home from first (he's had 1 extra base hit all year) whereas you at least have a shot from second. Also, I think they said JBJ was something like 24 for 26 in steal attempts career wise (now 24-27); I have no issue with the attempt. Personally, I don't think JBJ runs enough. Since he was thrown out by 10 feet, I don't think JBJ got all that good a jump off a guy who seemed pretty slow to the plate. However, Joseph's throw was perfect, so I doubt he would have been safe anyway. Sometimes the other team makes plays.
  5. That must have been an absolutely horrible jump by JBJ. Givens is slow to the plate and Bradley was out by 10 feet. It was a perfect throw so he probably would have been out anyway.
  6. Exactly. Porcello was not good tonight but as he finishes his night, once again he has at least given them a chance. But the hitters have to cooperate a little.
  7. 1) He's in his 9th year in the majors; he is long past the time they could send him down without his consent. 2) More importantly, who are you going to go with in his place? 3) He's returned to what he is, a #3 type starter. Last year was the fluke. With a little run support, Sox record in games he's started would be a lot better. They are 't scoring for him.
  8. Sorry Dewey, didn't see this before I posted. In answer to your question, Craig has about 4 years big league service time, so he had no say so in a minor league assignment. Plus, he still had options.
  9. Moon, we've been through this; the Craig/Castillo treatment won't work with Sandoval. As a 5+ year vet, he can refuse any minor league assignment, which would force the Sox to keep him on the major league roster or DFA him. If the latter, somebody could sign him (it will be for the minimum) and the Sox are on the hook for the difference. If no one signs him, they are on the hook for the whole thing. Either way, all or virtually all of his remaining $50+ million salary will count against the cap over the next 3 years.
  10. I agree as well. If it does come to that, Pom should be the one to go to the pen, if for no other reason than it's a role he's had before.
  11. Actually Kimmi, Johnson has made 2 starts this season. His first one, on April 18 at Toronto, wasn't nearly as good. He got the win, but the line was 5 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 BBs and 5 K's. If it comes to moving someone, Pom to the pen makes more sense; its a role he's a role he's had before. Right now, it's too early for that.
  12. If Sandoval had 1/2 year instead of 2 1/2 years left on his contract, he would likely be the one to go. But those extra 2 years loom large to the guys who have actually pay the contract, so it's not always strictly a baseball decision. Rutledge was a Rule 5 selectee, which means if they do decide to cut ties with him, they have to offer him back to Colorado for $25,000. They can't directly send him down. I'm not even sure he has options. He is at least holding his own offensively. Too bad the can't morph Rutledge and Marrero together into one player. There's not a lot of use speculating since there is no way of knowing how long Pedroia will be out. If I had to hazard a guess, it would be Travis going back down so he can get regular ABs (since they are using him now only against southpaws).
  13. I saw a lot of pretty weak contact on the part of Chicago hitters. He made a bad pitch to Abreu at a bad time. Other than that he was decent. Shelled is not an adjective I would use.
  14. That was Holmberg's fault for not getting over to first quickly; it forced Abreu into the awkward play.
  15. You've got a very warped view of what bad is. Before today, Abad's been pretty darn good this seaon. ERA for relievers doesn't mean jack, but for what it's worth it was 2.03 in 13 1/3 innings. It jumped up over 3 today. His WHIP before today was 0.975 and even now it's 1.098. Decent enough for a back of the pen guy. And if a guy's going to have a bad outing, it may as well be in a game you weren't going to win anyway. Oh, BTW, Cano has hit a few homers in his career; he's got to be approaching 300 if he's not over that mark.
  16. He's listed with 4 Ks in the boxscores on ESPN, CBS and the Red Sox homepage,
  17. The only other Sox pitcher with 4 Ks in an inning was the anti-Kimbrel, Tim Wakefield back in 1999.
  18. Torre was the definition of a mediocre manager outside of his time with the Yankees. With the Evil Empire, he went 1173-767 over 12 seasons for a .605 winning percentage (with 6 pennants and 4 WS titles). His average record was 98-64 In his other 17 years as a manager with 4 different teams (Mets, Braves, Cardinals and Dodgers), he went 1253-1230 (.505) which means an average record of 82-80; you can't get much more pedestrian than that. No pennants, although he did have 3 division champs.
  19. If Sale went Thursday, then it was going to have to be Pomeranz and ?? in some order or other on Friday and Saturday with ERod on Sunday. One way or another Velasquez (or some other clunker) was going to pitch one of the first 3 games and Sale was going to pitch one of the first 2.
  20. Well maybe Sale said something privately. Maybe they noticed something last time out. The one thing none of us armchair managers know is the little day to day things that real managers know about. One other possiblity coming of be the Price factor and slotting him in on a 5 day schedule.
  21. Who would you have put in? Keep your n mind everybody in the pen was used last night,
  22. Sonwhat would you have done differently?
  23. Well his ERA is about the same as Kendricks' so he's got that going by for him.
  24. What did he do? This was not a favorable matchup despite Gray's having a less than stellar year.
  25. I'm not saying he shouldn't be moved out of the cleanup spot, but who do you put in there? It's not like this team has been raking top to bottom with one guy not hitting. Hanley would be a good choice if he's healthy, but is he? Betts would be the other possibility, but he's so good in the #1 hole I would be hesitant to move him. So who?
