    That was my thought (except if Smith gets the first 2 in the 8th, I would have left him in to finish the inning). But, Sometime last season, one of the national color commentators (a pitcher, so either Kaat or Hersheiser) opined that the reason many relievers (especially closers) don't fare well in multi-inning situations is that they are not used to throwing an inning (or part of one), sitting down for 10 or 15 minutes and then going back out there. A starter does that all the time, relievers don't. The reasoning makes sense. Kelly has been fairly successful at it, but he isn't that far removed from his starting days. Johnson did a good job last night. Ditto. The guys who suck at it have been relievers for years. Starters will throw simulated games in the pen. Maybe relievers should throw simulated multi-inning stints in the pen (2-3 innings), especially in spring training.

    Actually, thr Sox lost opening day, so they also put yogether a 17-1 stretch. It’s how they got 7 1/2 up so quickly to begin with.

    Agree. Personally, I would have left Smith in, but Cora has all the data on match-ups, etc., stuff that everyone here has no clue about.

    Ortiz was the master of this, especially late in his career. The pitcher might get him, but he was seldom completely fooled on a pitch. And if he was, it wasn't likely to happen again.

    That's a racist statement in and of itself. I really don't care what NFL players do for the anthem. I watch my 2 teams and maybe a little of the Sunday Night game (of course, the fact that we are inundated with the Bears and Packers here helps that along). Was doing that for years before the anthem stuff and will continue to do so. Funny how the networks never covered the anthem (except for the Super Bowl and maybe the other playoff games) until that all happened. The NBA isn't worth my time to think about, but not because of racism, I just don't like it. I think the last time I watched a full NBA game was the finals when Jordan's Bulls won their first title (1991?). Since then, if you exclude the second half of Kobe Bryant's last game (and I watched that much only to see how many points he would end up with; I think he ended up with 60), my total viewership of NBA games might add up to one full game.

    Yaz had a big advantage over Hawk (beyond talent). He was exposed to Ted Williams on a regular basis early on.

    Nah, there would be a couple times an errant pitch might get you or somehow 4 balls go by before 3 strikes do.

    Ortiz did this constantly. One would have hoped it a little of that would have rubbed off. Yep. I hate to say it though, but it might take a trade or a long benching to get through to him. He may also be one of those players who doesn't really like baseball, he does it because he's always been good at it (relatively speaking), in which case he may never get it.

    I said he may be stubborn, and if it's true that he won't go into a film room or adjust in any way, he is being stubborn. And I guess if that is adversely affecting his ML career, it could be considered dumb as in a dumb decision. I said a couple of times, this has gone on through 2 managers and 3 hitting coaches, so the reason may well be and likely is JBJ himself.

    Totally true. I'm an advocate of actually going away to college. When you aren't in Mommy and Daddy's back yard, you learn to solve everyday things on your own.

    More than you think. As always, the extreme cases get publicized, but most do do what they are supposed to be doing.

    Obviously. All NFL and NBA players attended college (with the exception of some of the foreign players in the NBA, and I don't know enough about foreign schooling to know what their US equivalent might be). OTOH, equating attending college is a poor way to evaluate intelligence.

    Not so much at the major league level any more. The article below says that since 1985, more college drafted players have made it to the majors than high school drafted players. https://automatedinsights.com/blog/mlb-draft-data-college-high-school-draftees It also says that the cream of the crop (the Trouts of the world) sign out of high school. Players who do go to college (4-year type, not junior colleges) have to stay 3 years before being eligible to be drafted again or for the first time, so they get a decent amount of schooling in theory.

    The thing is, it's gone on under two managers and 3 hitting coaches. I'm inclined to say it's not coaching. He either is just stubborn or just can't do anything else.

    Since this has gone on through Colbrunn, Davis and Hyers, you have to start looking at the player. Is he just stubborn? Uncoachable? Or is he just not good? He seems at his best when he's driving the ball to left center. Then something changes, he gets pull happy and just tanks. I have no stats to back that up, just limited observations.

    Well, Lin is already back in the minors. None of the others can be sent down. And you would get rid of all 3 catchers? Not sure who they have at Pawtucket, but I doubt any of them is the answer.

    Going into the 9th inning last night, career vs. Chapman JBJ - .667/.800/.667/1.467 with 1K in 5 PAs Moreland - .000/.000/.000/.000 with 2 Ks in 5 PAs and for giggles Vazquez - 1.000/1.000/2.000/3.000 in 1 PA Yes, extremely small samples, but that's what you get against most individual pitchers, and especially relievers. As many years as they faced each other, Ortiz only had 31 Plate Appearances against Mariano Rivera.
