    Just temper your expectations of him defensively He has all of 5 games and ~40 innings at 2B in his professional career, all this year. Yes, he was a ss in high school, but most of these guys were.

    1) He has no options left, so to send him down they would have to expose him to waivers. 2) He has 9+ years major league service time. Any player with 5 years cannot be sent down without his consent. So even if he did clear waivers, he could refuse the assignment, sign with another team, and the Sox would be on the hook for his entire salary (minus the major league minimum). 3) In order to sent go on a rehab assignment, he would first have to go on the IL.

    He may actually have some value for an NL club. He can passably play several positions, which comes in handy for double switches, while serving as a 3rd catcher. Perhaps being used as a ph a few times a week might help him offensively as well. I wish him well.

    Good memory. Hobson made 43 in 1978. IIRC, he had an injured elbow. I recall reading something about him rearranging bone chips in his elbow between pitches. And the idiot Zimmer kept trotting him out there virtually every day. Records show he played in 147 games that year, 14 at DH and 133 at 3B.

    He’s talented enough; he has a 10 cent head. He has a ton of stuff and no idea how to use it, and he shows no inclination to learn how.

    My hunch is Ramirez was brought up solely for the role he was used in the other day: to eat innings in a blow-out game. Walden has pitched a bunch and Velazquez wasn’t available to fill the role. He is now. There was no intent to keep Ramirez. Once a player is sent down, he has to stay in the minors for 10 days unless another player is placed on the IL. They couldn’t bring Walden back for Ramirez directly so they first subbed Walden for Pedroia and then Lin for Ramirez.

    Once he was”selected” and placed on the 40 man roster, he’s no longer on a minor league contract and all the normal option clauses kick in.

    Ramirez does not have options remaining so they can’t just send him down. He had to remain on the 25 man roster or be exposed to waivers. Plus, even if he had options, he has 5+ years service time so he can’t be sent down without his consent.

    Holt's on a rehab; he can be brought back anytime (unless his kid pokes him in the eye again). But with Pedroia out indefinitely, you are right, Nunez is here to stay.

    What we don’t know is any behind the scenes stuff. What did the professionals see developmentally that us arm chair types didn’t? Was there an attitude issue? Maybe the drive wasn’t there to push himself to get better. Maybe he lost confidence because of what happened to him. These are things we will never know. And maybe, just maybe he wasn’t good enough to start with. It will be interesting to see if anyone picks him up. It is a shame he got hurt, but that happens all the time, and first round picks flame out quite a bit. I’m with those who think he got many chances to prove himself and for whatever reason he just never did. Maybe he will somewhere else.

    With the retirements of Carlos Beltran and Bartolo Colon, there are no more major leaguers who played in the 20th century. If you think about it, it’s not surprising, but it still made me feel old.

    Swihart can also passably play other positions; could be valuable to an NL club, especially with double switches.

    The difference is, Betts has a track record of hitting well. Swihart hasn't really hit anywhere, majors or minors, since the ankle injury, and unlike, say, JBJ, there is no gold glove defense to offset offensive woes.

    Well aware of it. My post was a tongue in cheek response to moon's posting of the catchers offensive stats and the fact that Vazquez was playing second yesterday.
