  1. JBJ is a better defender than Lynn was (and Lynn was good). Lynn was obviously the better all-around player.
  2. Yep, and the operative word is pitcher. Too many "fans" assume that every player on a lousy team sucks. They don't. The ultimate example I ever saw was Steve Carlton and the 1972 Phillies. For you youngsters, the 72 Phillies were 59-97 that strike shortened season; Carlton went 27-10 for them.
  3. You are not the one he is referring to, or at least the main one.
  4. My local minor league team, the Quad City River Bandits (Class A affiliate for the Astros) has been on the road for virtually the entire season since the Midwest League kicked things off on April 1. Modern Woodman Park is located in Davenport, IA on the banks of the Mississippi River, which has been flooding since late March. The field itself is dry, but the stadium is surrounded by water and no one can get to the park. The team had constructed a pedestrian bridge before the season to get over the water, but the railroad decided that that would be a good time to raise the tracks that pass by the park (didn't bother telling anyone) and would not allow use of the bridge. The team had to play "home" games in other cities for most of April. Finally last Friday, they were able to play a game at home and then a twin-bill on Sunday. Yesterday, a temporary levee was breached, sending more water into the area; the bridge is now under water and the team has been forced to move more series to other parks. I've seen a lot of players comes through here over the years; Correa and Bregman are among the recent .
  5. 3 runs in 2 games isn't a recipe for wins, even if you had vintage Koufax and vintage Pedro on the hill.
  6. It is but if they turn a DP in that situation (just a guy on 1st) it’s because the batter didn’t bother to run. It’s designed to prevent an easy DP because the runners on 1st and 2nd (and 3rd if applicable) have to hang around the base due to the pop up.
  7. Moreland is what he is; a guy who should be hitting 6-7 in the line-up. He should not be hitting 3rd consistently. He’s also at his best when he’s not playing every day.
  8. Got to have men on 1st and 2nd for that.
  9. Especially when he’d have trouble bunting something I might throw up there, and the last pitch I threw was in Little League in 1971.
  10. Unable to follow the game today but knew it was going poorly by the number of d-money posts. There’s a direct correlation.
  11. Nothing will be scheduled anytime soon; unlike the Tigers, this isn’t Tampa’s only trip to Boston.
  12. I do like Cora leaving him in. You made this mess, get yourself out of it.
  13. He makes waaay too much money for that role.
  14. Just temper your expectations of him defensively He has all of 5 games and ~40 innings at 2B in his professional career, all this year. Yes, he was a ss in high school, but most of these guys were.
  15. 1) He has no options left, so to send him down they would have to expose him to waivers. 2) He has 9+ years major league service time. Any player with 5 years cannot be sent down without his consent. So even if he did clear waivers, he could refuse the assignment, sign with another team, and the Sox would be on the hook for his entire salary (minus the major league minimum). 3) In order to sent go on a rehab assignment, he would first have to go on the IL.
  16. He may actually have some value for an NL club. He can passably play several positions, which comes in handy for double switches, while serving as a 3rd catcher. Perhaps being used as a ph a few times a week might help him offensively as well. I wish him well.
  17. Good memory. Hobson made 43 in 1978. IIRC, he had an injured elbow. I recall reading something about him rearranging bone chips in his elbow between pitches. And the idiot Zimmer kept trotting him out there virtually every day. Records show he played in 147 games that year, 14 at DH and 133 at 3B.
  18. He’s talented enough; he has a 10 cent head. He has a ton of stuff and no idea how to use it, and he shows no inclination to learn how.
  19. My hunch is Ramirez was brought up solely for the role he was used in the other day: to eat innings in a blow-out game. Walden has pitched a bunch and Velazquez wasn’t available to fill the role. He is now. There was no intent to keep Ramirez. Once a player is sent down, he has to stay in the minors for 10 days unless another player is placed on the IL. They couldn’t bring Walden back for Ramirez directly so they first subbed Walden for Pedroia and then Lin for Ramirez.
  20. Once he was”selected” and placed on the 40 man roster, he’s no longer on a minor league contract and all the normal option clauses kick in.
  21. Ramirez does not have options remaining so they can’t just send him down. He had to remain on the 25 man roster or be exposed to waivers. Plus, even if he had options, he has 5+ years service time so he can’t be sent down without his consent.
  22. Depends on how much luxury tax Henry is willing to pay.
  23. Holt's on a rehab; he can be brought back anytime (unless his kid pokes him in the eye again). But with Pedroia out indefinitely, you are right, Nunez is here to stay.
  24. All you need to know about this team is 19 games in, Betts has more strike outs than hits.
