  1. Houck will be in AAA next year. The Sox have basically said so and he really needs a 3rd pitch to be an effective starter long term. He looks promising but 11 innings don’t me a thing. He’s also only pitched 83 innings at AA and 25 at AAA. This is a very raw kid.
  2. I think you clicked the wrong column in Baseball Reference. The Sox have 16 outfield assists, which does lead the majors (5 more than any other team). Verdugo has 7 by himself. (In looking at it, you probably clicked the errors column, as the Sox do have 6 outfield errors).
  3. It’s as good an explanation as any.
  4. He’ll need a 3rd pitch to be an effective long term starter. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him spend some time in AAA to start the year in 2021 doing so.
  5. Minor nit; not all extra inning runs are unearned. Only a run scored by the guy placed at second is unearned. Any subsequent runs are subject to normal scoring rules regarding earned and unearned. If somebody hits a homer to score him, it's one earned and one unearned.
  6. Too much Yankee stench.
  7. I’m pretty sure Dalbec tied the club record for consecutive games with a home run. I looked at a list of players who have homered in 6 or more straight and I didn’t see any Red Sox players on it. If he did, anyone know who else may hit one in 5 straight? I don’t recall anyone in my time as a fan (and I’m in my 54th season) but that doesn’t mean much.
  8. Too many BBs. What is it with this staff (this year and last)?
  9. He’s having a great day, but how is Devers not on 3rd on that one?
  10. 300 pitches combined with one out in the 6th, and overall, the ump has had a large strike zone.
  11. I say take the position players out, put the scrub pitchers in the field and let them chase balls around.
  12. Now to be fair, if you were standing out there for hours on end watching your pitchers go 3 and whatever on every batter, walking a bunch of them, you might just fall asleep as well. One has to wonder if Roenicke was trying to send a message to the front office with Hall, get him out of here and never bring him back up here again.
  13. In addition to his great stuff, he was a thinking pitcher who was always learning. I remember reading his book as a kid. In it, he described his rookie year the first time he faced Hank Aaron. He got Aaron to ground into a double play on an inside fastball. Seaver "wrote" he recalled thinking, that's it, his weakness is an inside fastball. Next time up, Seaver threw an inside fastball and Aaron deposited into the left field seats. Seaver said he learned that hitters think as well; Aaron said to himself, kid pitcher, got me to hit into a DP on an inside fastball last time, bet he comes in with it again. The other thing I remember from his book was his description of the time he lost a perfect game with 1 out in the 9th on a single by Jimmy Qualls. He swore that someday he would pitch a perfect game (he got one no-hitter with the Reds, but never got that perfect game). The he said something about not knowing what a true perfect game was. Was it 27 pitches for 27 outs or 81 straight strikes? For some reason, those passages have always stuck with me, even though its been nearly 50 years since I read them
  14. He’s also only 21 and played all of 28 games at AA. He’ll be at Pawtucket next year, probably learning 2B. He’s been a ss most of his minor league career (that’s where he played when I saw him in 2017 and 2018 with our local Class A Astros affiliate). He looks like a utility type guy but I’d let him mature a little before totally giving up on him.
  15. I agree with Roenicke here. Hart can take the pounding. He’s goes out for the 9th as well.
  16. Pitching rotation? Right now, he’s got 1 guy who’s actually a starting pitcher in Perez, and he’s a 4/5 type starter. Line up wise he’s also not dealing from a position of strength either. What would your rotation be? What would your lineup be? Step up and be the manager.
  17. Who knows? For whatever reason, Beni can’t hit lead off. He sucked at it last year and he sucked at it this year.
  18. Weber has absolutely sucked as a starter in the first inning; he’s been halfway decent when coming in as a long reliever. Perhaps he should be the bulk guy following an opener.
  19. Nope. Southerners are not Yankees, and (start Southern drawl) ya'll would get in a whole lotta trouble for saying so (end Southern drawl). Years ago (like 40), I was told by somebody from Tennessee that there are only 5 true Southern states, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Louisiana and Texas are too far west, Virginia and Kentucky are too far north, Florida has all those damn Yankees and North Carolina has that word in it.
  20. Why not? Maybe a day off will help JD.
  21. Does it matter?
  22. Oh, I don't disagree, but it's not like Peraza is lighting up the place. It's more of an academic question. Kid showed a little something when given some extended PT. and then hasn't played at all.
  23. Downs has played about a dozen games at AA. No way he's in Boston next year, at least until late. Not sure what they are doing with Arauz. He played steady for about a week from roughly the 10th through the 18th, and now has played only once since then (and that was a full week ago). He was holding his own offensively at least while he was playing.
