    I remember listening to a game from the west coast, probably 1974 or 1975 between Ryan and Luis Tiant. The Angels won it in 15. Tiant went the distance in the loss; Ryan wimped out after only 13. IIRC, Ryan struck out 19 Sox that night while walking a ton as well. I think Cecil Cooper set or tied a record by striking out 6 times.

    Which would apply if it were February or November. EDT during the baseball season. Back to the game. 20 pitch first inning does not bode well for a long Houck outing, which is badly needed.

    2+ states really, since I’m on the Iowa border. I was looking at the weather app I have which can be set for any city in the country. However, since you’re in that area, I’ll accede to your local knowledge and observations.

    In looking at the Cleveland radar, there’s a line of strong t-storms passing over Lorrain right now headed east. Lorraine is about 30 miles west of Cleveland. That might be what they are waiting on. They probably don’t want to have to start and then stop. Of course, it could slide south of the stadium and all this would have been for nothing. The more concerning thing is the line expected in about 7:30 in that area.

    I think you added up the individual totals, which you shouldn’t do.

    Maybe we could save time and just have the lead off guy take first against our bull pen every time.

    I remembered hearing about it years ago. But the only way I could conceive of it happening is if the manager/coach is visiting the mound, leaves the pitching circle and then immediately goes back. Otherwise I can’t see a major league umpiring crew letting him get to the mound a second time.

    That’s the rule of a manager tries twice on one hitter, so I’m guessing it would be the same thing. Rule 5.10(l) says, in part In a case where a manager has made his first trip to the mound and then returns the second time to the mound in the same inning with the same pitcher in the game and the same batter at bat, after being warned by the umpire that he cannot return to the mound, the manager shall be removed from the game and the pitcher required to pitch to the batter until he is retired or gets on base. After the batter is retired, or becomes a base runner, then this pitcher must be removed from the game.

    Doubt the umps would permit it but if it happened, my guess is the pitcher would have to finish his minimum and the manager would be ejected.

    Sawamura let’s that drop it’s an easy DP with a chance at a TP. That said, he made the right play by catching it.

    Quantrill had a lot to do with that. He was really good.

    Like I said, that second strike was the one he needed to drive. Quantrill almost teed it up for him.

    Second strike is what killed him; that was his pitch to hit hard somewhere.

    Agreed, plus it’s a day game after a night game. One explanation I can think of is maybe Plawecki’s still hurting a little after getting hit in the hand the other night and while he might be able to catch in a pinch, he really may need an extra day or two.

    He’s done the job most of the time, but he doesn’t seem to have many clean innings.

    Learn the rules; a pitcher has to face 3 hitters unless he ends the inning.

    Got to get to the 9th first. Since Richards was warming, it probably will be Ottavino. Taylor will come in if Richards creates a mess.

    Two things can be true at the same time. Allen was very good and the Sox hitters helped that along with a piss poor approach at the plate.
