  1. I have witnessed this happening with other Red Sox teams and all MLB teams. What matters is how frequently it happens. A player can hit 2 HR's one game and go 0 for 5 the next. Bonehead plays are just the same, only more subjective.
  2. It matters, but it also matters how frequently it has actually occured.
  3. To quote Groucho, "Whatever it is, I'm against it!"
  4. I think your bonehead meter is set too sensitive.
  5. And how many incidents of running with your head down have you tallied?
  6. Yes, and I'm the one who brought up the White Sox as an example of not needing a top offense to win a championship. I also referred to the Yankees in another post. But I guess its ok because I'm a Red Sox fan.
  7. I think putting Price in the bullpen is a bad move. They should shut him down until next season. They don't need Price to win a championship.
  8. But he is not a high OBP hitter, .319 lifetime.
  9. Taking pitches can be a two edged sword. The ability to take more pitches can lead to a higher OBP and cause teams to use their bullpens sooner they they want to. It can also lead to missing a lot of first pitch strikes down the middle. Its hard to say what the best approach is, but aggressive free swingers often tend to have lower OBP's.
  10. Health is nice , but it may not produce as many wins as talent.
  11. Here is an article from the Boston Globe on Farrell's approach to aggressive base running. https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2017/08/13/snotes/oWVxYg0IN7nSBGE8fqiPYN/story.html
  12. No, that is being aggressive, It is all in the eye of the beholder. If the manager is encouraging aggressive base running things like that will happen more often than if he did not encourage it. How do you determine objectively the stupidity of being aggressive on the bases? If players don't cover or back up bases, if they don't hit the cut-off man, if they forget how many outs there are, if they try to make a play when they shouldn't; these are things that can be considered mistakes or lack of fundamentals. Running aggressively when the manager wants you to is not a mistake unless the manager tells you it is and your behavior should change after he tells you.
  13. But don't forget the boneheaded plays that won games. Y'know, just dumb luck. And don't forget that this team consistently tries for the extra base, which is a gamble, because Farrell thinks it pays off on balance. This can lead to plays that appear boneheaded.
  14. This is true. But I still can't help but dislike the ones who seem to me to be jerkier than the other jerks. Some of it does have to do with how they act on the field. Other stuff has to do with what they say to the press and what we learn about their private lives. Pedro Martinez was a great pitcher I didn't like. He was a prima donna and a bean-ball artist. If he was on the opposing team many of us might have hated him. Ted Williams, the greatest hitter of all time had a love/hate relationship with the fans that he partly helped to fuel. Manny Ramirez got away with the same things Williams was criticized for because he was a goofy man-child who took nothing seriously. And Manny is another one who was a great player but I personally did not like him. It is possible to admire the baseball player while looking down on the man.
  15. Very logical, as always. The Yankees should be in first place but they have had worse "luck". They have a losing record in 1 run games while the Sox have a winning one. But the bottom line is quite simple; score more than your opponent. It doesn't matter how you get there. See the 2005 Chicago White Sox. Not an offensive powerhouse, but their pitching/defense got them a championship.
  16. I don't expect him to. I'm just saying that he has these one game outbursts that may make him look better than he is. He does not consistently produce game to game. This kind of stuff seems common with him. Other players don't seem to have as many of these big offensive games as Mookie does. Of course, like clutch, it is not a repeatable skill. And maybe he really doesn't have more of these type of games than other players. But when he does, they are as spectacular as fireworks and get our attention. The weakness of looking at season averages is that they don't tell you how the player got there. They don't measure consistency.
  17. Love is real. Clutch and god are beliefs.
  18. You are. And what past teams are we talking about?
  19. What past teams are we talking about?
  20. Adrenaline is bad for hitting. Bad pitching is good for hitting.
  21. Maybe they had better hitters than this team.
  22. My gut tells me that Holt is not a poor fielder.
  23. Moreland is not really hurting the team unless you expected more than a typical season from him. He was supposed to split time with Hanley at 1b but that did not work out.
  24. Mookie has always done this. He has one fantastic game and we get all excited. He still needs to do this more consistently. But a lot of the young hitters are like that.
  25. Holt is not a dolt. He went through a very tough physical ailment this season. He was a very good bench player prior to that. Your disdain for him is misplaced. You have not really given any solid evidence of any lethargy or lack of fire or spirit. This team seems to have fun playing ball. That's good enough for me. They celebrate plenty during games. I'm not sure what you are seeing because I don't see it. Fundamentally sound baseball has nothing to do with fire or spirit. They are not related. Poor fundamentals may be hurting this team and maybe there are examples of it. Some may be due to youth and inexperience and maybe, just maybe, getting too excited and trying to do too much.
