Hanley needs to go. Maybe the same way Panda did, but maybe we can get some depth in a trade for him. If he can't be traded, just cut him. Pedroia is a bit trickier. I don't see him fitting in as a bench player, but he can't stay healthy enough to be relied on as a starter. I just don't see a good end for him, sad to say. And he still has 4 more years on his contract.

I am not saying it has to be defined only by statistics, but there should be some observable evidence and not simply a feeling. The two things are complementary, not in opposition. I don't define a player by numbers alone, but by observing how they play the game and exhibit their baseball smarts. One of my favorite players was Jason Varitek because he always kept his head in the game and did not give up on any play until the final call was made. That will not show up statistically, but it is a critical component of playing the game to the peak of potential.

Farrell' s aggressive base running philosophy did not help the Sox in game 1 of the ALDS. It actually may have hurt when Pedroia was thrown out at third. Even though the run scored, Pedroia could have remained safely at second and extended the inning with two runners on base. Every out is magnified in the postseason and every potential run lost could impact the final outcome. Yes, the Astros killed our pitching but if the Sox had scored more in the inning the dynamic of the game changes.

I agree with that assessment. Schilling was a clutch performer in the postseason. Nothing wrong with a limited claim like that.

And that is the problem. Everyone has their own recipe so claims of clutch are too subjective to have any real meaning.

For starters, there have to be actual results that qualify as clutch. Calling a hitter clutch without results is meaningless. These results may be measurable in some way such as frequency of occurrence. Then we have to establish what level of frequency qualifies as evidence of clutch being an inherent trait. I'm willing to hear suggestions on what percentage of frequency this should be. That is the subjective part but I am open to a reasonable threshold. I didn't ever say clutch moments didn't exist. I also didn't say clutch players didn't exist. I am only asking for evidence other than personal feelings that they do.

I wasn't optimistic about Nunez so I'm not surprised. The fact is that Altuve is a far superior hitter to any Red Sox hitter. Still doesn't mean the Sox are not capable of hitting better collectively as a team. But they really depend on the pitching and defense to keep the game close. Sox don't have the offensive firepower of the Astros.

You are right. We certainly can't put any blame on Farrell. Unfortunately, Sale's pattern of late season swoons continues. I had my fingers crossed that maybe pitching in the playoffs would be different. I expected the worst and hoped for the best. As great as Sale is, he seems to have a fatal weakness. It's not how you start, but how you finish. Farrell correctly pitched his ace in game 1, but late season Sale just doesn't have it Bummer.

Well even if you get by the Guardians you do realize that when the Sox get past the Astros they will neutralize Judge even if they do lose to CC again. Be careful what you wish for.

If this board is just to share opinions and not debate them at all, fine. That seems a bit boring. So if I say that Marv Throneberry was the greatest hitter in history it's just an opinion and we are all cool.

How was Ted not clutch? If anything, he might be the greatest clutch hitter who ever played the game, if such a thing exists.

So if it is dependent on results, won't there be some form of statistical evidence to support clutch or not? It isn't that I need it, but without some form of evidence, the concept of clutch becomes a belief that in your view can only be experienced by those who participated in competitive sports. But as far as I know, none of us here actually sat next to David Ortiz as a teammate. We all observed him from a distance as fans, and that is the vantage point we are all coming from despite our past experiences. We all also have access to a plethora of statistics online. So in that regard, I don't consider anyone's point of view special in regard to discussing clutch.

You have hit the nail on the head. The emotional impact of dramatic game wining hits and other exciting feats emotionally resonates so strongly that if it is done about 2 or 3 times the player is automatically labeled clutch. Sometimes it just takes one amazing World Series feat like hitting three home runs in three consecutive pitches, in three consecutive at bats, off three different pitchers and you can be labeled Mr. October. Never mind in the next years World Series the big strikeout when facing the rookie pitcher Bob Welch.
