  1. See John Kruk about the difference between an athlete and a baseball player.
  2. Excellent post. Running the bases is tough on the legs. There is a good reason that these type of injuries are common in baseball.
  3. This makes sense because baseball is a game in which the outcome is not highly dependent on strategy.
  4. Well, since the manager signs a guaranteed contract for a certain number of seasons, it can get kind of expensive to fire them on a whim. If the highest paid team fails, the blame falls on upper management, not the field manager. The field manager has no say in players contracts.
  5. If you're talking about Farrell's philosophy of base running, that was the main criticism I had of him.
  6. Two losses in a row. Did the players stop having fun already? I like how Cora is utilizing his bench and resting guys. Oakland is always tough on the Sox on these west coast trips. Best start in franchise history. Better fire Cora before it gets any better. Buck Showalter should be available soon.
  7. And Cora will manage the close games differently.
  8. I don't look at WAR without context. Hanley did not fill a need and did not have a position to play. Now we have two players, JD and Hanley, whose best position is DH. I was hoping the Sox would move away from the Ortiz era with a different approach to the DH position.
  9. We have two DH's now, JD and Hanley.
  10. Got lucky there wasn't more damage.
  11. Should have pulled Erod already.
  12. The money is only one aspect of why it was a bad signing. It was too long of a contract as well. And it was for a player who didn't fill a need at the time and had no position to play. Also, he had a recent history of injuries. I was against the signing at the time, and I haven't changed my mind about it. The only thing I disagree with are fans who think Hanley doesn't try hard enough or has a bad attitude. I just think he was a bad fit from the start and that hasn't really changed. Now they have JD Martinez, another bat they just had to get but who has no real position he can play nor did they need another outfielder. I prefer a roster with more offensive and defensive flexibility.
  13. Signing Hanley was a bad move and still is. It looks good compared to the Panda signing, but still a bad move. There was no position for Hanley to play, and he was coming off injury plagued seasons. Now they have to worry about his option vesting. So the problem remains. As for Hanley, the player, I have no problem with the effort he has made. Injuries have hampered him and his performance has suffered. I don't see him as a key to a championship, but if he produces and stays health he certainly can play an important role. He also seems to be a guy who has fun playing the game, so I think his attitude has a positive effect. Bad signing, good player.
  14. I fully agree with your reasonable assessment.
  15. I think Kapler could succeed as a manager if he gets the opportunity. Remember, Francona had a rough start managing a lousy Philly team. And look at him now.
  16. I hope he is. Farrell did a good job managing the Red Sox and has a World Series ring to prove it as well as back to back division titles.
  17. You are absolutely right. A manager can't call for a strikeout play or a homerun play. If the manager has done their job before the game begins there is little else of major impact they can have during the game.
  18. Respond with evidence to the contrary rather than getting personal. It's not that difficult. Or point out that fielding stats are less reliable. Or just let it slide. My take is that Bogey was being doubted last season because his injury hampered his hitting. Then it caused some to question his fielding ability. Now he's off to a hot start so you don't want to look at his overall game. If he slumps or gets hurt again don't question his fielding ability.
  19. Don't you know that in Boston every game is more important than game 7 of the World Series?
  20. What the hell Spud?!?
  21. I guess Red Sox managers should take a page out of Bill Belichick's book when it comes to post game interviews. Provide less red meat for rabid Sox fans.
  22. Farrell would have won this game.
  23. I'm trying to see how many different colors I can get without using nicknames: Mike Green Bud Black Bill White Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown (great first name) Vida Blue
  24. Or does he prefer biscuits, hmmmmm.
  25. I think David Ortiz did too. He could remember what pitchers threw him in past at bats in certain situations. This gave him an edge. Papi's image belies his smarts when it came to hitting. He was constantly working on his hitting, refining and improving it. He was one of the smartest hitters I have ever seen.
