  1. A bad sign for the Sox offense lately is Nunez moving up in the batting order.
  2. Because management didn't stick with him, as they should have. The deal was fine; they gave up on Renteria too soon. Even Panda and Hanley got more of a chance.
  3. I don't think the Renteria signing was all that terrible. I don't think he got a fair shake in Boston. He had a tough year fielding but pretty much had a typical season hitting. He was actually a good player who got off to a rough start in a tough town and was treated horribly by the fans. His career shows him to be a durable, reliable performer.
  4. Sox are second in the AL in runs/game. The offense is fine. A key injury would hurt the Yankees offense as well.
  5. This has to do with the difference between short term and long term decisions. Cora played the cards in his hand the best he could until he could discard and get a new card.
  6. You've got that right. I lived through the Gulf of Tonkin incident and Watergate. And wasn't New Coke a topic of discussion here at one time?
  7. A manager can make suggestions to the FO. I think it is smart to take good advice from anyone in the organization. This idea that we need to assign blame/credit to one person is not realistic. What would have happened to Red Sox history if Pedro Martinez hadn't lobbied for a particular player whose talents were being overlooked elsewhere?
  8. Yes, I'm serious. Are you? If he is so horrendous at calling games why do our pitchers perform so good when he catches? He is solid defensively and has baseball smarts. He also contributes keys hits at times.
  9. Good for Cora. He's on the ball.
  10. Holt is a great player to have on the team in any capacity. His season was lost last year due to concussion. It was smart of the FO to hold onto him.
  11. And Sandy is the one that many thought was expendable. He is a very good catcher and I hope they hold onto him.
  12. No. Next question?
  13. I don't see that. Hanley, at this stage of his career, is performing the best that he is capable of.
  14. It ain't that easy. You need to read the fine details of any new law, that's where the devil is.
  15. The 2004 Red Sox won with the Idiots, which included long haired Johnny "Jesus" Damon and scruffy players like Trot Nixon, Bill Mueller and Kevin Millar. And let's not forget Manchild Manny and who knows what substances he was on. In 2013 it was all about the beards. I love that stuff. I hate the Yankees Nazi haircut regime. It has nothing to do with player performance and more to do with crushing individuality, quirkiness, and fun. The truth is, Hanley came to the Sox injured and past his prime. I said it then and I say it now. This is the best Hanley can do at this point in his career. Getting rid of him helps to start working on roster flexibility.
  16. The biggest weakness in the sport of baseball is that the home plate umpire greatly impacts the most crucial part of the game; the battle between the pitcher and the batter.
  17. Yes, Speier agrees with me. I had already mentioned in the Hanley thread how having him on the roster hurt flexibility.
  18. I'm surprised but this is an excellent move for the future of the team. Now they should concentrate on building more flexibility into the roster. Can't have a team with more than one player whose best position is DH.
  19. There may not be a single critical point in the game, there may be multiples. And it may be too difficult to really know when they happen as the game is unfolding.
  20. Some sports allow for more strategic moves within a game tailored to counter a specific opponent. Predictions are based on information about the opponent, their tendencies, their strengths and weaknesses. This is much tougher to utilize in baseball, as much of the action cannot be directly impacted by strategic moves during a game.
  21. Yes, but in baseball its more about off the field preparation than it is about on field use of strategic moves.
  22. No, strategy involves getting information and using it to formulate a strategy to achieve victory. It differs from sport to sport, with baseball the least strategic of all. Football is highly strategic as it involves gathering knowledge about the opponents strengths and weaknesses, and coming up with both offensive and defensive play calling strategies and adjusting to game situations. War relies on getting information on enemy strengths and weaknesses, and coming up with strategies of when to attack, when to defend, etc. Baseball is mainly about pitchers vs. hitters and watching what unfolds. The manager can't call for the pitcher to try for a strikeout or a hitter to try for a home run or a fielder to make spectacular play. Most of the game is entirely out of the control of the manager's ability to affect it.
  23. Games may have multiple situations you could call critical. They can happen at any point during the game. You are seeing this thinking employed more often in playoff games than in the regular season, because the importance of each game is magnified. It is much more difficult to employ in the long run. However, Tampa is utilizing a new strategy with their bullpen games. This is truly a new and radical strategy change. The question will be whether it proves to be effective in the long run.
  24. You are actually agreeing with me. The right time to pull a pitcher is a guess. The right reliever is a guess. A guess is not equal to strategy. The strategy is knowing how to utilize pitching in the long term, not in a particular game situation. I'm saying that strategy plays very little role in the context of one game, but a much greater role in the long run of a season.
