    That's absurd. Kimbrell's drama his last year here was real, especially in the 2018 playoffs. 14 IP 13 Hits 9 BB 3 HBP 25 men on base in 14 IP (1.786) You forgot that drama? Jansen's drama is real, too. 5.2 IP 8 BB Jansen's 1.276 WHIP with the Sox in 2023 was the worst of his career, and no other year was even close. (1.297 career w BOS, before today's 1 IP and 3 men let on base.

    I'm never going to argue the Sox have great defensive-teaching coaches, in their system. That would be very hard to provide evidence in support. I get your point. I'm just not so sure the main reason we've had poor defense, in the past few years is due to poor or not so good coaching. Some students just can't be reached. Some students lack the basic skills and ability to learn as much as others. That could be a bigger factor- or not. IMO, it's been a combination of acquiring players without foundational defensive skills and not very good coaching on D, or just a lack of focus on improving D over O.

    That was unreal. Papelbon was pretty good at limiting drama, too. Martin was awesome, last season, but not really as a closer, much.

    Yes, more than fielders. That was my point. This also assumes players getting better or not is often due to good, okay or bad coaching, I guess.

    He led the league in saves, the year after leaving LAD (1.047 WHIP in a 64 IP, while leading MLB in games finished w ATL) That year, LAD had 43 sva and 18% BSvs (70%,) while jansen had an 85% save rate.

    Why? Devers will be over .800 by September, and maybe .850+. Yoshida might end up at .750. I never worry about Devers' O.

    He didn't let up a run in the 1st game. This was the first all year. Not even any unearned runs.

    He hasn't let up a run, this year, but this looks bad, and 5 BBs before this was not a good sign.

    IMO, defense seems more instinctual and not something that is learned as much as pitching and hitting. Of course, there are many examples of players who vastly improved on D, over time, but I think it is more about inherent skills and ability than something that can be improved upon with good coaching- like hitting and pitching. Just my take.

    Bello got his ERA down to 3.52. The lowest he got, last year was 3.74 after 15 starts.

    Yoshida actually flied out to LF before hitting that homer. Mayb e he's snapped out of his ground out to 2B funk.
