    We haven't reached the halfway point of the season, but Rafaela has looked about as consistent as anyone could ever have hoped for with the bat. He dipped a little below .700 in late April and again in early May, but those sample sizes were a bit small. He's been over .725 since early May and between .760 and .810 from May 13th to today. 2023+2024 >>> 2025+2026 K%: 27.1%> 20.0% BB%: 2.9%> 4.8% OBP: .275> .306 SLG: .389> .421

    I'm not doctor, but if MVP is right about every other player with the same injury getting surgery, then this is a big mess. If ends up getting it later, heads should roll.

    Agreed. I think the 3 decades of the great Sox hitting teams falling short, got many Sox fans believing that pitching wins rings. A healthy mix is always a good thing.

    Price and Sale were both viewed as aces. Nate & ERod made up for any short-comings. Kimbrell was viewed as a top closer. 2013 was maybe the more questionable one. Uehara had perhaps the best closer season in Sox history. Lester was widely viewed as an ace from 2008 to 2011, but the 2012 season added some doubts. He pitched like an ace after 2013 for several seasons. While Lackey was not an ace, except for 2007 and 2015-16, we probably don't win without him. The point was that we needed more than one starter and a closer to get the rings. Okay, maybe Bill Lee was decent enough behind Tiant, but our pen was not very good. Clemens had some decent support, at times. I'm not saying we win every time we had 2-3 good to great SP'ers and a great closer, but looking at all the very nice offensive teams we had, we had no rings without 3+ very good to great pitchers.

    I have a hard enough time placing correct value on our own prospects. I have no idea what the best return might be. I'd hope we get major league ready prospects, because we can't handle a long rebuild plan. The theory is that teams in the chase will overpay to fill a position of greta need, in hopes it gets them over the hump. Almost every playoff contender could use Gray. Many already have a good enough closer and wouldn't want to mess him up by moving them to set-up to make way for Chapman. Chapman could be a huge boost to a few teams, In the AL, all but two teams are more than 5.5 GB the wild card slot. In the NL, only 3 teams are more than 4.5 GB. I doubt 25 teams will bid on Gray, but several teams will call. Duran, Coulombe, IDK, a catcher and Guerrero will not bring back significant vale.

    I think there has to be some context to your point. I was a Sox fans for over 3 decades of hitting, hitting, HITTING. Those teams from the 70's had awesome line-ups. The one with Hobson batting 9th jumps to mind. We often had a couple good pitchers or maybe one great one, but never a solid staff. When we got Pedro, we still didn't win a ring until we added a top closer (Foulke) and another top pitcher (Schilling.) The next rings all had 2-3 excellent SP'ers and a great closer. Yes, teams have won without very good to great pitching, but the Sox have not.

    I think it was underemphasized for so long, especially at the farm level, that we swung the pendulum too far the other way to try and right a wrong. I think changing the farm aspect was done well, and I'm not sure the plan was to trade for Gray and Oviedo plus sign Suarez, but the winter moves designed to add to the 26 man roster was lop-sided towards pitching. Durbin for Bregman was maybe sideways on defense improvement. Monasterio over DHam? Meh. Contreras over Toro, Casas, Romy and then finally Nate Lowe was a significant upgrade for the O and D, but it did not make up for the loss of 829 PAs from Devers & Bregman- not to mention 328 from Refsnyder & N Lowe. The Anthony injury sucked, but we have not had more than our fair share of everyday player injuries, so that should not be a viable excuse.

    On paper, we have near the best 5 SP'ers and 1-2 RP'ers in MLB. Our defense is #1. Our baserunning ranks very highly. We have 3 positions in the top 3 in fWAR (1B, RF and CF) The problem is we are barely near average at 3 others and suck at the last 3.

    Many of us felt we came up short on offense, this past winter, but nobody expected the sharp declines by so many returning vets, some of whom are in their prime years or approaching them. Duran, Narvaez & Yoshida come to mind, and while Story is slightly past prime, his decline was very steep on O and D. Abreu has done okay, but he probably should be improving at his age. Only Rafaela, Contreras and Wong have hit better than expected.

    And Story, Yoshida & Bello were inherited. Story & Masa were untradable, so it's hard to blame Brez for keeping them around. Playing Story at SS- maybe. We coulda traded Bello & Duran, but many here questioned trading one of our best offensive players, when the O looked so weak. How many here questioned the Crochet trade and extension? Now, it's Brez's fault he did those things? I'm not happy with the final product on the field, but I did think we improved on 2025. I don't think any of expected so many players on their way towards prime would all stink at the same time. Ultimately, the GM gets the blame. He was supposed to know all this and trade all the declining players right before they decline. He did that with the declining Sale and was blamed for that, too. It's also his fault Harrison & Priester vastly improved for a while, right after being traded. He was criticized for thinking Gray was a #2, then signed a real #2, who is pitching like a #1, now, and that's worthy of blame, too, because he spent on arms not bats. Being a GM is a no-win job.

    We are 11th in the AL in team fWAR by everyday players. This includes defense, and fangraphs has us 15th in the OFF component of team fWAR. Your point has evidence to support it. We aren't even close to being ranked 13th. -33.0 BOS -27.0 CLE -11.9 TOR -10.9 KCR -10.3 LAA WE are as bad as the 3-4-5 teams combined (-31.1) We are second in Baserunning. 1st in Defense 4th in Pitching

    Wasn't it like day two, he refused to do a work out at 1B with SF? The lengths we are going through to take all blame away from Devers is surprising, to me. Of course, he's not 100% to blame for everything, but over the past 13-14 months, too much has happened to think this is all or mostly dingus management's fault.

    Futrell took over the farm lead in IP, in his 12 K in 6 IP game last night. He's 6-0 with a 3.05 ERA, but that .606 OPS Against is pretty impressive for a SP'er.     Anthony is anybody's guess. Some think he needs surgery and should have had it weeks ago. Casas has not even started hitting yet. Romy and Sandoval are rehabbing. Mayer is day-to-day (left foot sore,) and IKF has increased swelling in his arm, so that's not good. Sogard is hitting off a tee. Crochet hasn't even started throwing. Moran got a cortisone injection and will not throw for a few days. Oviedo and Crawford have not started throwing, yet. Houck hopes to start throwing soon.
