I think alternating Devers and Casas at 1B-DH could help them stay healthier and not need days off from the line-up. That could give each of them 20+ more PAs, even if they still get hurt the same amount. If Yohida becomes a sunken cost, so be it. The Bregman gain is worth it. The improved defense is worth it. Word was he could have played LF in 2024, had he not been hurt, so maybe he could play some there. Many see Yoshida as already being a sunken cost, and one poster already wants him DFA'd. I'm biased towards defense. I admit it.

IMO, the weak link is clear as day, now, but yes, it could change, and that is a plus with Bregman. His ability to play SS might be more important than 2B, actually. To me, fixing our 3B defense, and maybe improving 1B D overrides trying to keep Yoshida in the line-up. I'm also more confident in our 2B options than many seem to be. (Campbell and the platoon of DHam with Grissom/Romy) Nobody has to be etched in stone on DEC 17th, but I think signing him with the idea that he'd play 2B, with everyone healthy seems very wrong, to me. The line-up may be stronger with Yoshida over DHam-Grissom, and I can see how that is a solid point, but I actually think a DHam-Grissom/Romy platoon can hit .775, like Yoshida does, and the D upgrade would be very helpful with Breg at 2B, DHam-Campbell at 2B and devers at 1B. Just my take. (BTW, I was also for Story at SS and Bogey at 2B or 3B, when we signed Trevor, so what do I know?)

While Murphy is due $15M a year from 2025 to 2028 (4 yrs) with a team option for $15M in '29 (no buyout,) his tax hit is just $12.2M a year. That $3M may be helpful, if Jh ever decides to spend up to the line. They have a very young OF, so I'm not sure they'd need Rafaela or Abreu, but I do think they'd want a player that would help them, right away. The guy is not a salary dump, but his salary might keep the return cost from being something real bad. Would one or two from Whitlock, Rafaela and Abreu be enough? Could one plus Kelly and a non 40 man roster good prospect be enough?

But why start the plan with Devers at 3B and Breg at 2B just to keep Yoshida in the line-up? If that's the case, then trade Casas for a pitcher. Sure, Bregman can be a back-up plan for 2B or SS, but no way do I signing him to be the 2025 2B plan. The flexibility is a plus, for sure, and could come into play, but not on the projected 2025 starting line-up. Injuries can always change things.

Emphasis on "might." Romy might be okay as the third stringer. Romero & Arias are in the pipeline but too far away for 2025.

Oh, he'd play at 2B, if we kept Devers at 3B, but why not "flush it out," now? Devers has sucked at 3B for way too long. Bregman is a plus defender there. Also, about 2B, while it has been a major issue for over 6 years, except for the brief time Story played there, I feel better about what we have, now, since Pedey. I'm a big fan of Campbell, and I'd be okay with him being our starting 2Bman on opening day, or the day after he earns the extra year of control. I'm also more than fine with starting the year with DHam vs RHPs and grissom or Romy vs LHPs. I like all 3 of them better than EValdez, Westbrook, Sogard, Reyes, Gasper and Wong. These guys played more than half the innings at 2B, last year. Grissom did not look good on D.

Interesting. We'd probably see Rafaela back at SS, again, once mayer hits the IL.

We can afford him, but ATL will want someone, most likely not Wong. I'm not sure ATL would take a far-away prospect. I doubt we'd give them any top prospects, as good as he still is. What kind of offer do you think both sides might like? Name names.

I don't think they outbid everyone for Burnes, even if Cohen wants him. I think, at some point he will pivot to Manaea or someone else.

I was cold towards Bregman, earlier, this winter. I'm still not a big fan of his, but maybe out of desperation, I'm thinking he might work well for us, but ONLY if it means we finally get Devers off 3B. I'm not sure if Devers can play 1B better than casas, but he can't be much worse. If he is, just DH him, or alternate 1B-DH between Casas and Devers. Maybe that would help prolong their careers and keep them a bit healthier. Maybe they'd need less whole days off, if the both DH'd 80 games a year. He's also a decent RHB with some pop. This is a pretty decent line-up: 1. Duran LF v R/ CF v L 2. Bregman 3B 3. Casas DH/1B 4. Devers 1B/DH 5. Story SS 6. Abreu RF v R Refsnyder LF v L 7. Campbell 2B (DHam v R/ Grissom v L) 8. Anthony CF v R/ RF v L 9. Wong- Narvaez IL: Yoshida Bench: Narvaez/Wong, Refsnyder/Abreu, DHam & Grissom

Rafaela is not a salary dump, but some think he is not worth the money and contract length given to him. He may also be the type of player ATL likes and thinks they could "fix." I like Rafaela. I think he'd make an excellent 4th OF'er, back-up 2Bman and maybe emergency SS, but at that cost, it may be rather high. With as many injuries as most teams have, he may still get 350-400+ PAs over every season in a utility role. Rafaela & Romero for Murphy and a little cash?

We can argue all day about who is more fragile or likely to be injured, going forward. IMO, we should try to avoid anyone with a higher than average injury risk situation. That may not be easy to determine, but I think we all feel Monty and Buehler are high risks than maybe half the good pitchers in MLB. WE just stretched out Houck and Crawford. Neither are an injury risk, but they are maybe the only starters we have that are not near average or worse.
-
To bad there is no match for Casas.
-
I think the point was that if we are taking on Murphy's backend of his contract, we may want to "balance" the cost a little bit by returning a contract that is not min wage. (I suggested Rafaela, and I doubt they take Yoshida, even with some cash.) I'd like to keep Whitlock.

I doubt the NYY are in on Burnes. This will be a test on Cohen, though. The Mets need a SP'er and they have said they want one. I'm curious if Cohen takes the "I won't be outbid, no matter what" role on this one. I think someone can outbid him, here.
-
I did want Monty, last winter, so I can see why you wonder about my differing view on Buehler, I have since changed my view on Monty. I see him as being close to Buehler on the injury risk spectrum. He did have a few more seasons of 150+ IP, but he's a year older. Both did not look good, last year. No 10 IP sample size ever convinces me of anything.
-
I respect your opinions and see why people would want Buehler, I just felt like people were trying to minimize his injury history and risk to make their position stronger. Like I said, maybe I read into things, too much.
-
I think I read that ATL might ease him off catching duties, so if he looks be a DH, I'm not sure he's a fit- long term. He also has just one season with 450+ PAs, so that concerns me, but good catchers are hard to find. I'd give more than Whitlock for him, and hope for some cash relief or a Yoshida inclusion, with us paying some cash, but not a lot. What does ATL need? Would you give Whitlock, Rafaela, Yoshida for Murphy with no money, either way?

I see these comments as "minimizing" his injury history and risk: Is Buehler really oft injured or is it just one injury (TJS)? -MVP Such wonky analysis. 2018-2021 was plenty of innings.... Bell Maybe, I'm reading into things, too much.

Yes, I forgot about Story getting more time. He should be a better runner than Rafaela. I do think DHam deserves a long look as our 2B platoon. The other half of the platoon could be Grissom or Romy. We won't add Campbell to the 40 and 26 to platoon, but I guess we could end up having Campbell play 2B vs LHPs and OF vs RHPs, if we trade an OF'er, and Anthony is still in AAA. DHam was good on D at 2B, too. He could also get some PR chances.

I'm not acting like Monty has not missed time. I just said avoid him, too. Saying it was just "one injury" is a classic.

Top pitcher signings by bonus money: 2024: 1 in the top 7 (over $175K) and 3 in the top 18 (all over $50K) 2023: 0 in top 3, but 3 in top 7 ($125K+) and 7 in top 14 ($53K+) 2023-2024: 2 in top 6 (12 players)

I agree, but what are the odds of us outbidding all the also-rans for the two biggest prizes remaining. I doubt the odds are even 50-50 we sign one. We may not even get Flaherty & Hoffman or Teoscar/Santander and Flaherty/Hoffman (2 of the 4 tier 2 guys) What are the odds we even get Manaea/Pivetta/Buehler and Estevez? (Tier 3)
