  1. Any aging player can have a resurgence, but I just don't see one for Arenado. Last 3 OPS: .891>.774>.719 He turns 35 in a couple months. As much as I'd love to see our 3B defense improve, at what price would this come to? Our offense would almost certainly take a hit, and we are already shaking our heads at no O'Neal replacement, Our budget would almost certainly take some hit, and we can't even afford to pay Grichuk or Lareano $4-5M/1, as it is. Either STL has to pay a big chunk of his deal, or they have to take Yoshida and some cash. I guess they could add Helsley or Murphy and change the whole dynamic, but I doubt that happens.
  2. Gasp... or Yoshida plays LF, Duran CF and Abreu-Rafaela RF. Gulp- Gasp-Gulp!
  3. It's actually Cespedes and Fitts minus Mullins and Sogard from your deal, and surely dumping most of Yoshida's deal is worth something more. Why do you think we need to give anything for a negative value player? They should give us a prospect to take his full contract.
  4. Nobody is changing their choice to come to see the Sox on Arenado.
  5. I've explained this. If they are prepared to pay 1/2 his salary, which is about $32M, or $37M, if you don't count deferments, then taking Yoshida plus $8M a year is leaving $30M of his contract for STL to pay for rather than hand us $30M. Maybe, they end up trading Yoshida, later and save part of the $30M still owed to him. Maybe he earns $10M a year, for them. We open up a roster slot at DH and get a decent 3Bman. We pay $60M for Arenado and $24M for Yoshida (not $54M) Note: explaining it doesn't mean STL does it, and I'm not even sure I want this deal.
  6. Sounds about right, but do you still think giving Mullins and Sogard for the full contract is a good idea? Why should we spend very limited dollars on him? If they could give us Helsley, too, that would change in a big way, and save them more money. Yoshida +$8M x 3, Cespedes & Fitts for Helsley & Arenado? (Maybe add a Castro or Penrod type.)
  7. I'm thinking Devers could play 1B better than Casas, after just a few weeks. His main issue is the arm accuracy. Plus, he seems to want to play in the field vs DH'ing, so maybe 1B would keep him a little bit happier.
  8. It's too bad they have no room to play Yoshida. Instead of just paying money, they could take him plus the equivalent dollars to equal the same money saved.
  9. They say with deferrals and the COL payments, Arenado's contract is really 60 something million. I would not pay him that as a FA. Why would I give any prospect for him?
  10. With the Grichuk and Laureano signings, I think our plan is to have Anthony in the OF for opening day or the first day he qualifies for the added year of control (mid May?) I'm not so sure about Campbell. I think the run DHam and either Grissom or Romy at 2B as a platoon, to see if they can do the job. By the time they figure it out, Campbell will have the extra year of control and can win the job. Mayer gets the call, only if and when Story goes on the IL.
  11. Unless they take Yoshida and cash as part of the deal, I don't want us to add another Yoshida, even if Arenado improves the D at 3B.
  12. Agreed, but opening up the DH slot for Casas and or Devers can help keep them healthier and "fresher,: which would hopefully lead to more PAs per season. I'm really afraid Arenado might hit .650 in '25, .620 in '26 and maybe worse in '27. His bat speed has nosedived.
  13. Okay: pay $8M x 3. Why do you want to give any prospects for a "sunken cost" player? We know whenever JH spends money on someone, it means he won't spend on someone else. Why spend $60M on an over-the-hill player?
  14. I still think there is a good chance Devers can become a better defensive 1Bman than Casas by mid season. If not, then yes, DH him almost all the time, except when Arenado or Casas needs a day off.
  15. He's a good glove, but his bat will be worse then Yoshida's over the next 3 years. STL should pay 30% of his deal, minimum, to just break even and get nothing worth anything, IMO. If we give them Yoshida, who they don't need, and pay about half his contract, that would equal the 30%. Mullins & Yoshida and $8M x 3 (tops) for Arenado. (I'm not even sure I like this deal.) On hitting in Fenway: it's not just about the wall and HRs. It's about a big RF and great sight backdrop for seeing pitches.
  16. "Depending on how things play out..." = if Bregman decides to take less money and years to sign with BOS.
  17. No. I counted he and Gio as about the same.
  18. Taking on the whole salary should mean they give us prospects. He's not worth it. Add Yoshida plus $5M a year, and it's closer to something I'd do.
  19. It will be hard to repeat 2024. It could be like Ellsbury's 2011, but I doubt it.
  20. The Dodgers paid the Cubs to take Brasier, who they DFA'd. (They get a PTBNL.)
  21. STL wants to dump salary, so they don't make any trade that doesn't cost the other team a bunch of money. Why would that be the team led by Dr. Cheap-a-nator?
  22. Grissom, Yoshida and $15M for Arenado.
  23. MLBTR reports Sox still in talks about Arenado. This better not cost us more than what FAs we might have gotten instead. Yoshida mentioned. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/02/cardinals-red-sox-have-reportedly-had-recent-communication-on-arenado.html
  24. So, not it's what? Robertson & Duvall?
