  1. I'm not saying we will do it, or that we will be successful even if we actually do it. We did try, this year. We spent more than we lost, for the first time in a while. The Bregman deal was a big change from even the Story and Yoshida deals, despite the opt out aspect. Buehler's deal was worth Kluber + Richards. Gio's, the year before was a failure, but it was a step up attempt. We have failed on our biggest contracts. I've been saying that for years. We failed with paying Devers $31M x 10, too. We didn't get any better, and no we dumped him. I'm not defending our management by calling attention to the role Devers played in this debacle. I'm not letting anyone off the hook. This sucks, and I'm not "happy" criticizing Devers (nor management.)
  2. You know it went beyond that, and that was a minor sign or symptom of a larger issue. It was one instance of not hustling, either. I liked Devers, a lot. I wasn't happy with him not agreeing to do what was best for the team, but I've also pointed out that it looks like his manager never asked him to do so. I never felt any hint of any attitude issues, before this year. I cut him some slack for a few months, and wondered about statements lost in translation and cultural differences. I wanted Devers "forevers," and I still wish we could have made that happen, even at $31M a year for a forever DH. His bat is not easily replaced, and while we can try to justify the trade by saying no forever DH is worth $31M x 10, that does no ease the gut punch of losing his bat in our line-up. I have no idea if JH will send the "money saved." We've been burned by these hopes, too many time to expect he will. Even if he does, it doesn't help 2025. It's just mid June, and we may have been starting a nice run at something special, and we punted on 3rd down at the 40 yard line, early in the 3rd quarter of a close game. It makes very little to no sense, unless you can totally decouple from the fact that we dumped our best player just as we started making a move. To try to look at any bright side takes a decoupling. No DH is worth $31M x 10. Add to that him being a poor role model, this year and having so many bigtime rookies joining the clubhouse, this season. Add to that the Yoshida is only a DH aspect to our roster. Add to that some reports that say Harrison has a ton of upside as a SP'er, going forward and Tibbs being a fine looking prospect that won't bitch about playing 1B. The biggest "add to that" is going to be what our winter spending budget will be- not just this winter, but going forward. If JH goes back to being a miser, I doubt our kids can carry us to a ring or even a WS appearance without some serious expensive additions and or an emptying of the farm beyond the big 3. I'm tired of waiting. I'm not happy this went down. I'm not blaming just Brez, Cora, JH & Co. Devers has to bear part of the blame, too. We can disagree on how much goes to who, but Devers deserves some criticism.
  3. It's going to come down to how much we spend, this winter, and if we have another big trade or two up our sleeves. Replacing Buehler, Gio and Hendriks contract value, in kind, looks easy. Replacing Devers, Bregman & Chapman, in kind, will not be easy but at an AAV of almost $75M for these three's current contracts is not impossible. The big bummer, to me, is the apparent giving up on 2025. It's obvious this was not part of some long term plan. Why sign Bregman to one year, if we are punting and looking longer term? Our management team is flying by the seat of their pants with no clear goal in sight, except some vague "build for the future, while trying to fool the fanbase about our chances today."
  4. So, that makes it not worthy of mention? It's not like he's offered $15M for the option year. He just may take it. If he walks, there is another big chunk of change added to the pot- "MAYBE!" We may also extend him to a different deal without opt outs. I get the negativity, today. I'm not happy either. I called this a 3rd down punt. It's a waste of one year of Crochet & Bregman, and it shortens the window on the front end while barely bumping up the back-end window.
  5. Yes, they should have moved Devers to 1B, right away, or at least a pair share of 1B/DH w Casas. They made a mistake. That doesn't give Devers the right to pout and be selfish. When Casas got hurt, the best thing for the team was for Devers to play 1B. Bottom line: the player did not want to "Learn how to play every position." The player was traded. Plenty of blame to go around, including Devers, Cora and Brez...and all the way up to JH.
  6. There is also Arias, but I doubt a couple packagings of Arias, Romero, Tibbs, Harrison, Jh Garcia, Bleis, Cespedes & Jo Garcia gets us an ace and a bat to replace Devers,
  7. You really need to look more closely at the defense of Abreu vs Duran. It's not even close. I'm not against Rafaela in RF, nor do I think Duran is a bad defender, despite his hiccups, but Abreu is a tremendous RF, especially in Fenway's RF. Rafaela is a tremendous CF'er. Anthony is a better defender in LF than Duran. If any OF'er DHs more than the others, it's Refsnyder, then Duran. v R DH: Duran LF: Anthony CF: Rafaela RF: Abreu v L DH Refsnyder LF Anthony or Duran CF Duran or Rafaela RF Rafaela or Anthony or just DH Duran and go Anthony LF, Rafaela CF & Refsnyder RF
  8. Team Control Years after 2025: 7+ 2 options Campbell 6+ 2 options Rafaela 6 + conditional option Crochet 5+ option Bello 2+ option Story 2 Yoshida, Hicks 1 + 2 options Whitlock 1 Sandoval Opt outs: Bregman after 2025 and 2026 2026 option: Buehler & Hendriks (mutual) Giolito (club) _________________________________ Arbs: 5+ Anthony, Mayer, Narvaez, Dobbins, Fitts, Jh Garcia, Eaton, Guerrero, Perales, Sogard 4 (or pre-arb then 3 arbs) Abreu, Slaten, Weissert, Harrison, DHam, Kelly, Criswell, Bernardino, Murphy, Grissom 3: Duran (1 signed + 2 arbs) Crawford, Casas, Romy, Toro, Wink, Wong 2 Houck, Toro, Burdi 1 Alcala
  9. He will. Bregman is not due back for many weeks, and we now have an opening at DH. Speaking of injuries: 60 Day IL: Crawford, Casas, Yoshida, Winckowski, Murphy 10 or 15 IL: Bregman, Houck, Slaten, Hendriks, Burdi, Perales (AA). We could retroactively add Perales or Bregman to the 60, if we need a slot. It's interesting we DFA'd Penrod rather than add one to the 60, but maybe they saw something in Penrod that convinced them to cut ties. (I missed the Andy Lugo for Jorge Alcala trade a few days ago.)
  10. Buster Posey on Harrison... “Kyle Harrison is a guy that has tremendous upside, I’ve been very outspoken about what I believe the foundation of success is for an organization. It’s pitching and defense. To give up a guy like that is not an easy thing for us.”
  11. So, even if we assume we spend the Devers money, next winter, who would we get? This assumes we bring Bregman back. Alonso for 1B? Cease, Gallen or Framber to join Crochet in the rotation? Alonso & Michael King? Cease and Naylor? Do we count on Casas or the Toro-Romy combo? Do we go for 2 starters? We need a new Chapman, too. Helsley, Suarez or Diaz? I seriously doubt we even add King, Naylor and Helsley. (That's way more than Devers money, BTW.)
  12. This is all so surreal. BTW, we DFA'd Penrod to make room for the 2 pitchers. Houck now has the longest seniority on the 40 man Roster (SEP '20) with Wong second! What a total cluster! While our future still has promise, just how long can a team ask its fanbase to "wait till next year?" Then, how sure can we be that 2026 will be much different, except for the worse? For weeks, we've been talking about how we've stockpiled youth and depth to the point of logjams that could lead to trades to improve areas of need with solid vets. Instead, we trade our best vet for more prospects and deeper logjams. Geeesh!
  13. My updated Prospect Rankings: 1. Anthony 2. Mayer 3. Arias 4. Jh Garcia 5. Perales 6. Tibbs 7. Dobbins 8. Tolle 9. Clarke 10. Cespedes 11. Bleis 12. Early 13. Valera 14. Romero 15. Jo Garcia 16. Gonzales 17. Sandlin 18. Soto 19. Taylor 20. Paez
  14. We can totally agree on that last line, Max. I've been talking about letting Devers try 1B for over 3 years. We screwed it with Betts. We chose the wrong time to extend and to dump Sale. We got lucky the comp pick for Bogey was a good one, but we blew that one, too. I saw no sign that Devers was ever an attitude issue, until this spring. Brez/Cora blew it, but Devers is supposed to do as asked, especially when it was obviously for the betterment of the team. It's not like we asked him to play CF or moved him off 3B so Toto could play there. You gotta admit, Cora did everything he could to shield him from more issues by forcing him to play 1B. For what? So, he could pout and dogg it, anyway? The whole team saw what Devers did to Cora, them and the fans. Would the team be better off firing Cora, Brez and letting the kids learn from the Devers example, going forward? Please give an honest answer to this question.
  15. Yes. I'm glad you brought him up. Did he pout, dog it and moan when moved?
  16. You make unfounded assumptions about Devers ability to play 1B. Yes, Casas was easy to improve on on D. Your idea that he was doomed to hit .550 forever is unfounded, too. What made Devers a really bad 3Bman was his arm. he was okay with the glove and quickness, and 1B is easier. Sure, Devers may have struggled, but i dont assume he'd suck like you do. Maybe he hits better, because his main beef was he wanted to be "on the field." Nobody knows, and neither of us can assume anything. Not Casas sucking all year, not Devers batting worse as a 1Bman. To me, there is no evidence that shows being a DH helped Devers hit better. None.
  17. We can hope, but you really want to expect Anthony to be Devers, year 1?
  18. This is a tired old narrative, and I never fell for it. DH did not make Devers a better hitter. He was better, last year, before the injury and had a better year way back when as a 3Bman. To me, Cora made a mistake, if he told Devers he was going to DH only. With Casas being a china doll, he should have had some foresight. So freakin what! Bloom promised Devers 3B for longer than it lasted. Things change in baseball, and no player is above it. I dont care if Cora promised Devers $100M, if he ever played anything but DH. That does not matter. We needed him to play 1B, and the fact that Toro & Romy ended up doing fine does not change what Devers did, and how Devers backed Cora into a corner then dogged it more than once, which was total disrespect to Cora, the team and the fans. I'm all for giving people a second chance, but to me, Devers used up his second and 3rd chances in just a few short months. Bye bye.
  19. No Woa. The guy was dogging it- more than once. Cora bent over backwards to not pressure Devers to play 1B, as his boss was pushing, and Devers had him rolling his eyes by dogging it and pouting. I've been in Devers corner for years, but the eye rolling said it all to me. Am I happy we traded our best player for future assets and nebulous financial flexibility for some unknown later time? HELL NO! Can we ever replace his bat? Not likely. Does this look like a 3rd down punt? Yes. I'm not sure it was a bad idea, though.
  20. Yes, and Devers was thriving at the plate at 3B, too. Dh was not what made him a hitter.
  21. Yes, but there was more than just less smiling and team closeness. Devers was dogging it and hurting the team morales and example setting went out the window. YES.
  22. Hicks was the money part of the trade, but $12M x 3 is a drop in the Devers bucket. This was about dumping salary and poor attitude while adding young talent.
