A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II

I agree, but I'm not gonna roast Brez for getting this one wrong (so far.) The Crochet deal wipes a lot of mistakes away in one swoop, and then he got the extension. The Chapman and Wilson signing proved the biggest spring pen doubter on this site, wrong- ME! A+ and A+. The Buehler signing has sucked, so far, but the sucky Gio signing is coming back in a big way. Let's not forget, Brez traded for many pitchers, including Priester in under 2 years. Some have worked our okay to well, and some have not or are still TBD. Some not mentioned: Slaten, Weissert, Harrison Sandoval, Hicks, Criswell, Burdi Sandlin, Fajardo, Holobetz, J Bello, Judice, Moran I Campbell & Hendriks I did not mention any draftees or IFA signings, here. Two of Brez's biggest fails are Sale and Priester (so far.) Not a bad percent of failings. -
I'd be playing Mayer vs LHPs, but I guess Cora has his reasons. (We could have played Romy at 1B and Mayer at 2B. Toto is slumping, badly.) Tonight's line-up: 1. R Refsnyder LF (Lefty killer.) 2. R Bregman 3B (Gotts be the man!) 3. R Romy 2B (I like him 3rd v L) 4. L Anthony RF (Coming into his own.) 5. R Story SS (Stay hot, my man!) 6. R Rafaela CF (Movin' on up...) 7. L Yoshida DH (Coulda put Romy or Ref here, too) 8. S Toro 1B (not only slumping but 165 pts worse vs L) 9. R Wong C (Bello's binky)

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
moonslav59 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I was fine stacking up on everyday prospects, since they are more likely to work out than drafting pitchers. The idea that goes along with it is that we'd also sign FA pitchers, when needed or trade some everyday players for pitching when needed. We need a pitcher or two, now, but it seems very few posters want to trade everyday players or prospects for pitchers. I'm thinking this blitz of adding more pitchers than everyday players via drafts and signings may be short-lived as we try to balance it out some. Also, as the team moves towards being top contenders, the time arises where adding quality arms becomes the top priority. I think that's why we saw college signings as the window may be open from 2025 and onwards for 4-6 more years. Many of our core everyday players are controlled for 4+ years. (Some of our pitchers, too.) -
No, answer the phone, and say, "We'll put you on hold, until we decide."
-
1. A solid #2 SP'er (at worst a solid #3.) 2. A solid set-up man that could maybe close, when Chapman is unavailable or gets injured (gasp.) 3. 1B- A 2 month rental is fine. Do not trade a top prospect for a rental, and certainly not a 1B rental. Let's remember: Toro .915 first 27 games/.569 last 28 games. (.379 last 8 games.) 4. Back-up catcher (optional)

Put 'em on hold.

I'm pretty sure AZ will be sellers, this deadline, despite being just 5.5 behind in the WC PIT should be sellers, but I seriously doubt they trade Skenes. COL, WSH, CWS, OAK should all be sellers, but some teams might not have what we are looking for, or may not want to part with really good and controlled players. The borderline teams are: ATL -9.5 WC BAL -8.5 WC MIA -7.5 WC KCR -5.5 WC MIN -5.0 WC CLE -4.5 WC LAA & TEX -3.5 to 4.0 WC

No doubt. I was talking about the time of the Sale trade: DEC 2023. DEC 24, I'm not sure KC had the job sewn up with Mayer still in the picture, but it does look like they liked him more, as Mayer had a better spring and was still passed over. I also remember the choice to put KC on the 26 was in doubt to near the last choice date, as DHam was still a possibility, too. Afterall, DHam had some decent WAR numbers in 2023, after a real bad start. Do you agree with my point about DEC 2023's outlook?

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II

Yes, maybe. He's been a nice innings eater, too. He did slump a little after his first 3 starts, but 3.86 w and FIP or 4.21 between those 3 starts and his last one would have looked very. (14 game stretch.) It is weird that he liked the guy enough to trade for him, then traded him away. Maybe Holobetz jumps up, soon. BTW, Y Rod hit a game winning HR, last night. Now, we look to trade better prospects for pitching. Oh well. -
I would not trade any of our best young players for ANY rental.

Devers would always play over Yoshida, but maybe not Casas. The should have moved Devers to 1B and Casas to DH on opening day. (I said it then, too, and over the past couple years, too.) We messed it all up: it's over now. Move on. If Casas comes back, he can DH and play 1B, and we can live with his awful D, if he can hit like he used to do. If not, Campbell might be our best 1B option. Maybe Romy plays 1B v L and Campbell can DH those games, as Yoshida sits. Who knows what their plan. We do have more flexibility, especially on defense, without Devers on teh 26.

I think I agree. I edited and moved Sandlin down 1, I shoulda done two slots.
-
Bregman holds the key for several players/prospects chances at winning a significant slot on the 26 man roster for 2026. Casas might be right up there, next. Campbell may have a shot at 1B, 2B or both.

He's number 3 on soxprospects.com, right now, and that is before Anthony or Mayer graduate. Tolle does have 63 IP, already, so his sample size is getting significan't but I agree, not yet definitive, but why is Valera ahead of him? I don't think SEC ball is the same as AA, but Tolle played college ball, too- not in the SEC, but still... IMO, Perales remains our bext pitching prospects, and assuming we view Dobbins & Fitts as graduated, here is my order: 1. Perales 2. Tolle 3. Whitherspoon 4. Clarke 5. Valera 6. Early 7. Phillips 8. Sandlin 9. Eyanson 10. Delzine/Fajardo

The same thing that happened when we put Devers at DH. (maybe trade Casas?)

Maybe into the extended future. They acquired Grissom in DEC 2023. I'm not sure they viewed KC as the 2Bman in DEC of 2024. More like Mayer. I wasn't 100% sold on Grissom being a plus 2Bman, but the bar was set low over the past 5-6 years, and I felt he was a good solution, despite being pretty much unproven at the ML level. Unlike Jeter Downs, he had some success at the ML level, when we got him. I was way off, but at least I admit it.

You don't think Sox brass viewed Grissom as our 2Bman? We traded Sale for the guy. He was highly regarded, despite a down tick from the previous season. His D was never good at SS, but the expectation was he might be okay at 2B. I thought he was the fix.

I think many of us were okay with the Gio signing- just not as the only one or the best one.

I'm not so sure we non tender him. He won't make a lot via his first arb, and we currently have a slumping Toro at 1B and nobody else but Romy as a shortside platoon. I trust Casas over Jordan. Unless we make a big deal or signing, I'm thinking they view Casas as our 2026 1Bman, but may want to plan better for his back-up.

I guess. I'm not sure anyone assumes the CWS demanded Meidroth or no deal. My guess is they wanted someone like DHam and we talked them into Meidroth. They'd probably loved to get Grissom, but no way we would have given him, since we saw him as out FT 2Bman for the next 3+ yrs.

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
moonslav59 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I totally agree with everything here, but when you draft more pitchers, you draft less hitters. The IFA bonus pool is fixed, and we've used a larger percent on pitching than previous years. Most of our bigger trades have been hitters for pitchers. (Grissom & O'Neill are the biggest exceptions I can think of.) He did sign Bregman. -
Leading the league in IP and GS is surorising with Crochet, but his performance has not been #1 surprising, to me. No Bello or Rafaela? Toro's OPS is now .739. He may catch up to Dom Smith's .709 in 2024 by season's end.
