    We got a top tier pitcher by trading and extended him to a reasonable contract. While Skubal would probably not extend, unless it's at maybe $40M AAV+, someone like Ryan or Lodolo might extend. They aren't "top tier," but they do fall in or close to the top 30 SP'ers in several categories, assuming we define top tier as top 30.

    Yes, I never do this, if we don't spend every penny of the savings on a major upgrade or two, of a $15-18M extra signing or two at $9M each.

    To me, I don't see much of a step down replacing Yoshida with in-house solutions (like Romy) or a step up to Duran. The idea is this: we have about $40-45M to spend and need two $30M players. Adding the $18M from Yoshida, gets us there. If we don't spend it, then don't trade Yoshida. Losing the prospects I mentioned only make sense if it helps us get that second big bopper. One could argue the step up to Alonso ($30M) from Suarez ($15M) is not worth trading those prospects, and they might be right.

    No. I love his approach. It was the torn rib cartilage injury from 2024 that we were ever sure he recovered from fully, and it may be reoccuring.

    I'm not saying that's the reason they cut them. It may be one reason they wait to 2027 to add some back.

    I just don't see us offering Skubal NYM type money in an extension, and I don't see him signing for less. Why give up so many players to pay top FA market money for him. We can just pay top FA money for a pitcher and keep the players.

    1. They don't have to pay them during a work stoppage. 2. They may realize the mistake they made by cutting them.

    Okay, I see $13.75M for Lowe, $1.8 for Devers, $7M more for other 40 man roster players and $750K more for player benefits. That's about $23M $47M-$23= $24M. Add Lowe and it's $38M, which is close to the $40M I have been using for over a month. I'm not sure why the $7M difference on 40 man roster pre-arb players (MLB & MiLB.)

    I get that, but if we pay NYM money, why couldn't we just do that after 2026?

    I have to think we could pay $6-10M of the $36M owed and at least save $3M a year.

    Thanks... So Yoshida + Perales + Cespedes + Sandlin for nothing. We save $18M on the tax line and can then easily sign two big contracts. Not that JH will allow it, but maybe if one is a 1-2 year deal, he'd agree.

    There is a good chance that if some sort of salary cap is agreed on after 2006, there will be grandfather clauses, so I doubt that worries big spending teams.

    We are not sure Casas will be ready on opening day or even by May or June. Sure, it was his knee, but he has the other underlying health issue that is concerning.

    The one downfall is that this trade kinda narrows the "window" to one year, but one could argue we still have a solid roster, if Skubla bolts after 1 year. We'd be losing 2 years of Duran, 5 years of Early & Sandlin. We'd gain some years from Stephen & Cozart. We'd sure look good for 2026, if we added two big bats on top of Skubal.

    I fully understand that, but why would Skubla extend with us for less than what he'd get from the Mets (or Dodger?)

    Maybe I'm missing the payments being made to ex Sox players, but I added it all up, and it looked like $42-46M under line 1. Who am I missing? AAV in $ Millions 28 Crochet 23 Story 18 Yoshida 16 Anthony 13 Chapman 10 Hicks 9 Sandoval 9 Bello 8 Duran 8 Campbell 6 Rafaela 5 Whitlock 1 Criswell 14 Arb estimates (no 12 for Lowe)- 4 Houck, 3 Crawf, 2 Romy, 1 Casas, 1 Wong, 1 Bernardino, 1 Wink & 1 Kelly+ Total 167 + 18 Player benefits + 4 Players with 0-3 years in MLB on 40 +3 Players with 0-3 years in MiLB on 40 +2 Arb Pool 197 Total, not counting payments to Bregman and other ex-players. That's $47M under. Again, who or what am I missing? This should not be rocket science, yet we see wild disparities listed everywhere.

    DHam had a half a season of good play. I'm not sure we say he's "due"... I do think other teams might see him as a starter, but they are the cellar dwellers and low budget teams. They won't give up much to get him.

    How excellent? Arias? Clarke + ____? Sandlin + Cespedes & Romero? BTV says Yoshida is -25.2, which jives with my estimate that we'd have to pay about $25M out of $38M owed to break even. That means we'd have to add $25M in prospect value. According to BTV: I'd avoid these.... 29.5 Early 25.4 K Campbell 22.5 Tolle+ 2.4 Mullins 22.3 Arias + 3.3 Paez Maybe... (only if it helps us get 2 big boppers) 16.2 Clarke + 9.3 Cespedes or 8.3 Romero 17.7 Witherspoon + 8.3 Romero 16.1 Jh Garcia + 9.5 Harrison Yes... 16.1 Jh Garcia + 8.3 Romero or 9.3 Cespedes 11.6 Perales + 9.3 Cespedes + 3.3 Paez/5.5 Eyanson

    I doubt that stops many teams from offering the world to the best FAs, in fact they may see this as their last shot at it. (JH won't.)

    My point was, why would skubal extend for less than what the Mets of Dodgers would pay? If he'd agree to an extension before the trade is finalized, I'd listen, but if the extension is an NYM prices, then why not just wait a year and offer a NYM salary?

    Maybe more value elsewhere but it would be like worth $5-7M to another team and $4-5M to us. Since he's owed $18M x 2, we'd have to pay $11-14M a year or give up a prospect or player worth about that much. I'd do it, if we could find a taker. I'm not sure how much BTV says Fitts or Crawford is worth, but I id give one and might give both plus Yoshida for nothing. Maybe Fitts, Sandlin and Yoshina for bonus pool money or a comp pick. Next, I'd look to do the same with Hicks. If we could free up more budget space, maybe we could get 2 big boppers.
