    I don't think "clutch" is a skill set or a repeatable skill or quality. Do I think some players have a tendency to rise above "when it counts?" Yeah, a few, but even the great ones go through long droughts with no big clutch hits. Several players have been labelled as chokes and then went on to be great. Others, like Josh Beckett, started out looking like one of the best clutch performers of all time and ended up fizzling out "when it counted". Trying to acquire a player due to a clutch performance or two usually doesn't work out (see Pablo). For those who feel "clutch" is identifiable in certain players, give me a list of the 9 best and let's revisit that list after this season.

    Okay. Manny had a great first year here- no greater- no worse anyway than before. Johnny Damon did much better than his previous season before joining the Sox. Keith Foulke did not let up his first year, but then fell off a cliff. VMart and Beltre. But, you are right- not much recently.

    Maybe they blame the lack of clutch on too much pressure from the fans- like thousands of fans screaming loudly for you to get a hit hurts your concentration. Maybe we should all be silent during clutch moments!

    Ben's weak spot was certainly his FA signings. I will say though, that a high percentage of big signings fail - many from day one. That's not an excuse. Ben sucked at FA signings.

    Are there some players that had one of their best seasons in their first year in Boston? I can think of Bill Mueller. He'd never been over .780 in any season with 400+ PAs, and he went to .938 in 2003. Ortiz. Carp went mental in his first season with Boston, though it was just a partial season. I'm sure there are more.

    We never paid Papi $22.5M to DH, and that's what HanRam essentially is- a DH. I'm glad we have him in our line-up as Papi retires, but we certainly could have saved money and done better in this winter's FA market with big RH'd bats.

    The whole American League DH base running number was -63.6. It's not like other teams' DHs were running wild out there.

    I think he felt the injury wasn't severe, and by the time he had the chance to reverse the trade, the deadline was past and we had little options. I thought MLB should have allowed us to reverse the trade after the season as punishment to the Padres.

    I wasn't old enough to see Ted Williams. Manny was the best I ever saw. I loved his approach. As nutty as he was, he was the calmest batter I ever saw. He rarely bitched at the umps. He didn't throw tantrums after a key strikeout. Total command of the strike zone. Maybe the best eye ever. Some complained about him walking in the clutch too much, but many of those walks led to Papi's heroics. All of that contributed to messing with the opposing pitchers, yes. That was all part of his greatness.

    The minute I heard we traded for OCab, I drove to my brother-in-laws house and told him, "we just made a trade that was going to win us a ring!". When I told them it was Nomar for Cabrera, he said, "Who?". To me, it was all about the huge defensive upgrade at SS. Nomar was all flash at SS on defense. I've always been a firm believer in great SS defense, as you might know with my rants on Iggy. "Addition by subtraction?" Maybe. I loved the defense of OCab, and his offense was a plus as well. I lost my love for Nomar around 2002.

    I didn't mean to imply you didn't care about the future. I do think that if DD knew he was getting Sale, he'd have not done the Pom deal. I could be wrong. I love our team right now, and I'm not down on DD. I just wish we had Espi.

    I will say, I believe our fans are way more of a plus than any minuses that may happen infrequently.

    I agree, but he doesn't have to ever be that good or to end up doing better than 2.3 years of Pom. To me, it was a high risk of trading about 5 years of ML control of Espi for 2 1/3 years of a pitcher who had just shown a half a year of greatness before the trade. I'm not trying to badmouth Pom, because he's good starter to have in the mix right now. He certainly makes us a better team on paper for the next two years, but I plan on being alive long enough to care as much about this team's future 3-8 years out. If Pom does well or better and/or Espi fizzles out, I'll still think it was a bad gamble that we happened to win.

    He did have one more great stretch in him from 2006 to 2008, including his phenomenal 2007 season: .363 54 139 (1.029 OPS) I think he became FA after 2004-same as Nomar. I'll take Manny and OCab over ERod and Magglio. Remember, we got Ellsbury and Lowrie as comp picks for OCab. We later got Melancon for Lworie and Holt for Melcancon. We later got comp pick Kopech for Ellsbury, and MK helped us get Sale.

    Well, it's been 4 years since he pitched a lot in a season, so maybe they know something we don't, or they saw him throw in a try-out or something.

    I know that. One outcome could be he's the next Pedro. I don't fault anyone for liking or being okay with the deal. I just really hate the deal.

    Not to me. I'm not saying I wouldn't have been high on our chances with ARod and Magglio Ordonez on board, but I always felt Manny was the best hitter I've ever seen.
