    Picking up Schilling gave me a lot of reason to expect greatness in '04, but it was really the day we traded Nomar that I felt as sure as ever we were going to win a ring, so I guess I was wrong about feeling that great in January 2004. I feel pretty good right now.

    I felt great about the 2004 team that winter, but having three aces takes the cake. I feel as excited as I have ever felt this time of year. I just wish Papi had prolonged hie retirement by one more year.

    It's hard to prove someone had a bad year because of the spotlight. The Renteria case looks like the pressure got to him, but he was playing hurt all year as well. No, it's not absurd to think it might get to some players, but my point is that if this can get under some of our players' skin, then the pressure of the playoffs would expose that weakness eventually or anyways.

    I agree. I was against the Kimbrel trade too, but have softened my stance a little bit. Having Espi or Kopech had we swapped Espi for Kopech in the Sale trade would really balance things out a little more right now. Not having Pom would really make our rotation depth look much worse though.

    At least DD kept the 3 that fill immediate needs: LF: Beni replaces a revolving door wee've had in LF since our last ring. PAs in LF-- 2016: 222 Holt 190 Young 102 Beni 58 Brentz 51 Swihart 9 others 2015: 379 HanRam 102 Castillo 86 De Aza 51 JBJ 32 Holt 21 Craig 13 others 2014: 190 Gomes 185 Cespedes 131 Nava 91 Sizemore 32 Holt 31 Carp 20 Brentz 5 others 3B: Devers can hopefully replace Pablo soon. Perhaps Pablo will move to 1B or DH once Devers arrives. Pitching: Groome looks like a steal from the 12th slot of the draft. Hopefully, he can replace Pomeranz in a couple years and then maybe become a solid #2-3 type by the time Porcello and Sale reach the ends of their contracts.

    If this kind of things bothers our players enough to make a difference, then we don't have what it takes to win it all anyways.

    Agreed. We are the greatest fanbase any team could possibly want to have. Yeah, there may be a little added pressure, but it sure beats fan apathy and fans leaving in the 7th inning during tied games.

    We lost a lot of close games last year. We seemed to lack the ability to get the "clutch" hit when we needed it. I put "clutch" in parenthesis, because I do not think it is a skill or repeatable aspect. Hopefully, the odds will be on our side this year in those close games. I agree with Kimmi on the fact that our baseline should be 98 wins. I have to think taht even if you take away 15 wins due to Papi's retirement, Sale, Thornburg and Moreland should add quite a few wins to the projected total.

    Losing a key player will hurt us badly, but all we can really hope for is that other teams have the same amount of injuries, and I think we have better options than most teams. It would be nice to have some near allstar calliber subs, but I'm not sure any team has that. I'd be very comfortable with Young in LF full time vs LHPs and RHPs. I'd be very comfortable with any of our 3 catchers behind the plate. I'd be fine with Holt at 2B and Rutledge at 3B. I'm not sure about Hernandez at SS or Travis at 1B, but they probably wouldn't be negative WAR players. Again, compared to most teams, I think our bench is not just a strength, it is (comparatively speaking) a very strong part of our team.

    Well said. The M's have certainly been busy wheeling and dealing this winter.

    Even if we didn't get Sale, and you think losing Papi would mean losing 9 wins (93 to 84). A full season from Pom, Young, Pablo, Swihart and more from Carson Smith plus the additions of Thornburg and Moreland alone would get us over 84 wins.

    I see it this way, if we lose two starters, I'll take our 6 + 7 starters combined over most other teams' 6+7 starters combined.

    Maybe. I don't try to guess poster's intentions or feelings. I like Harmony. I think he's an overall asset to the board. I don't see it as being unreasonable to think Sale's gain just balances out Papi's loss, so there's not much reason to expect a significant improvement over 2016. I happen to disagree, but even if we don't improve much, we were a top contender last year, and no AL East team got any better on paper.

    Agreed, but since our 6th starter is better than all but maybe 2-3 teams' 6ths tarter, I think that makes up for any comparative loss we might have at the 7-8-9 slots.

    Harmony will continue to point out why the Red Sox will not succeed-until they do. Harmony is a good guy who injects some non-biased opinions into the mix. At least he's consistent with using WAR and WAR projections in all of his evaluations- even with Mariner players. He's not a troll, but I do think he's hooked on ZiPS.

    Kimmi, nobody is saying these guys are as good as the FT'ers they may end up having to replace long term. The evaluation of a bench is not done by comparing them to the starters; it is done by comparing our bench to the benches in MLB. I'm not saying we have the best bench in MLB, but I do think it is top 10 and maybe even top 5 or 6. Young, Holt, Vazquez and Swihart could start on many teams. They might not be all stars, but we won't be burned by having them play everyday. Maybe Travis can join this group before the season is over.
