  1. I wasn't a baseball fan in 1967, but I remember thinking how fitting it was that Yaz got up to bat with 2 outs down 1 in game 7 of the 1975 World Series. A big hit there would have been huge. Sadly he flied out weakly to CF. He had a good series in '75. I've never knocked Yaz. He doesn't deserve it. I don't see the purpose in trying to label a person clutch or unclutch based on tiny scattered sample sizes.
  2. Actually, HanRam has had a few bad years scattered over his career, It should not have been a a big surprise.
  3. If we can replace HanRam's $22M with Travis and Pablo's $19M with Devers, we'll be in great shape to keep more of our stars before or when they reach free agency. If we get really lucky, and all three of our top prospects come through at a high level, then Groome can fill first Pom's role and then Porcello's or Sale, if we can't afford both. Imagine if they all do great AND we can keep everybody but Pom: Sale, Price, Porcello, Groome, Erod-Wright Kimbrel, Thronburg, Smith, Kelly, Barnes, Hembree, Ross 1) Beni LF 2) Travis 1B 3) Betts RF 4) Bogey SS 5) JBJ CF 6) Devers 3B 7) Pedey 2B 8) Dalbec DH 9) Swi-Vaz C
  4. It had to. What a messed world we live in.
  5. I remember it well. Sadly, the pitcher who let up that HR committed suicide years later. I remember Hendu having a big World Series against the Giants after we traded him away.
  6. 932 PAs Late & Close: .690 OPS 1171 PAs High Leverage: .710 OPS I won't anoint Hendu a clutch player based on 141 PAs of post season numbers fueled by 3-4 very hot series in October. He will always hold a very special place in my heart. I remember being so dejected that series. I was at my brother-in-laws house and had gotten up to leave. I was standing with the front door literally open with one foot outside, peeking my head around the door to watch that "last pitch". Needless to say, I came back in to watch the rest of the game. I loved Hendu. I loved his HR trot- one flap down.
  7. I was kidding about the "gagging" comment. That's why I put in in quotes and said :if you wish"- meaning I wouldn't call him that myself, but posters who make claims based on 1 PA could have. I don't even believe in calling a player a gag or choke or clutch. Hendu went from goat to hero. That was my point. Yes, I watched every pitch of the 86 playoffs. Yes, I was wrong about "one hit". So yeat, it you want to proclaim Hendu clucth over 3 Hrs and a sac fly, go ahead. I don't call anybody anything over even 200 PAs , let alone 4.
  8. It was hard to know back then that the cost of sluggers would fall so much, so to me, the signing looks much worse in hindsight. (i.e. I'd rather have EE than HanRam.) But, I'm not talking hindsight. The deal was not good at the time. It was better than the Pablo deal, and at the time, I argued I'd rather have HanRam at 3B than Pablo. There was no need for both. Signing Scherzer made more sense.
  9. I was all on board with the Porcello extension at the time. All the years were within prime.
  10. Comparing a 1Bman's WAR with a DH's WAR is highly unfair. WAR deducts positional value for being a DH.
  11. He also "gagged under pressure", if you wish, when he turned a 2B into an HR to force him to have to hit the HR later to make up for it.
  12. I don't think we can pin CC's demise on too much pressure. He sucked when he went to LA- the land of laid back, comfy, casual. I'm not saying it had nothing to do with him sucking, but there's no way to know. Even if it was, I do think the pressure would probably equate to wilting under the pressure of the playoffs.
  13. Not then. Not now. Not me.
  14. I was referring to the Dave Henderson is clutch statement. I wasn't a baseball fan in 1967 at age 8. I only remember Yaz from 1971 on.
  15. Cards lose a se cond and third round pick and some money for hacking the 'Stros. We lose 5 prospects and get a two year ban on international signings for what we did. Am I missing something?
  16. The thing about Leon is this: while Leon may fall back down to earth as most of us expect, how hard will it be for him, Vaz and Swihart to improve on this: .449 Hanigan in 111 PAs .454 Holaday in 32 PAs .584 Vazquez in 181 PAs
  17. Someone said they had the hearing today. Maybe they can still settle, but I thought it meant the arbitrator will decide now.
  18. So, you can win the "clutch" label with just one hit? Not in my world.
  19. No, not at all.
  20. The first Uehara was not a big splash signing. I think he got $4.5M x 2. My point was more about all MLB big splash signings. Hardly any are clear success stories. I was against the HanRam signing at the time. I would not do the HanRam signing again, if we could go back.
  21. Wow, we actually made it to an arb hearing before settling? How long's it been?
  22. That's what you got to love about ST. He's a hard worker. What a great relief it would be, if Travis and Devers could replace Pablo and HanRam with improved productivity at a super low cost. It would probably allow us to keep just about all or our top talent beyond their current years of control.
  23. Assuming we keep Bogey beyond his current team control years, here's what our 2020 line-up might look like: 1) Beni LF 2) Travis 1B 3) Betts RF 4) JBJ CF 5) Bogey SS 6) Pedey 2B 7) Devers 3B 8) Swi-Vaz C 9) Dalbec DH
  24. I'm hopeful, but I think it's a big stretch comparing him to PG. It's not like he broke into pro ball at age 18 or has just 600 minor league PAs. He's gotten over 1000 PAs and has a very respectable .816 OPS, but the guy is going to have to start putting up monster numbers on the farm to make me start thinking he's PG's second coming.
  25. I can think of no better example than Papi to make claims that "clutch" is a skill set, yet the numbers are mixed. Career OPS: .931 Career Post Season OPS: .947 Career Late & Close OPS: .870 Career High Leverage OPS: .941 I get the argument that he was facing tougher pitchers in the post season and for the most part late in games during the season, but the numbers look pretty even across the board. That being said, I'd take Manny up to bat late in any playoff game over anybody else. Manny would probably be my number 2. Here's his numbers: Career Regular Season: .996 Post Season: .937 Late & Close: .894 High Leverage: 1.018
