  1. You mean 2015? I still think Holt has higher trade value than his value to us, but I'm not for handing him away just to make room for Hernandez (Selsky and Rutledge).
  2. If DD thinks Rutledge is a better fielder at 3B and hits LHPs better tha Pablo and Hernandez, then I think the call is close enough to choose to start the season with Hernandez at AAA, and I'm one of Marco's biggest supporters. (I even suggested we look to trade Holt, so Marco would be on the 40 man roster as our utility IF'er.)
  3. Will this be how our starters line up? 4/3 PIT Porcello 4/4 off 4/5 PIT Sale 4/6 PIT ERod 4/7 @Det Wright 4/8 @ Det Porcello 4/9 @ Det Pomeranz 4/10 @ Det Sale 4/11 BAL ERod 4/12 BAL Wright 4/13 off 4/14 TBR Porcello +1 4/15 TBR Sale 4/16 TBR ERod 4/17 TBR Wright 4/18 @Tor Pomeranz +4
  4. This won't be the opening day line-up, but it would be my choice vs the RH'er: 1) Beni 2) Pedey 3) Betts 4) HanRam 5) JBJ 6) Bogey 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon This would be my second choice: 1) Pedey 2) Bogey 3) Beni 4) Betts 5) HanRam 6) JBJ 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon This what I think it will be: 1) Pedey 2) Beni 3) Betts 4) HanRam 5) Bogey 6) JBJ 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon I could see JF trying this... 1) Pedey 2) Bogey 3) Beni 4) Betts 5) HR 6) JBJ 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon
  5. Betts and HanRam both hit 30+ last year. JBJ had 26.
  6. I know I may be solo on this one, but if we really want Hernandez on the 25 man roster, I'd see what we could get for Holt. In no way would I hand him away, and I would not trade him for lesser value, but Hernandez is a better fielding SS, maybe even at 2b and 3B. Trading Holt would put our OF depth in peril, but with Selsky looking good, we might be okay. I still think, as much as I like Hernandez, he should start the season in AAA.
  7. I'd do away with the NL and AL and cut even more down on travel costs by making divisions even more regional. EAST TOR BOS NYY NYM PHI BAL NORTH PITT DET CLE CIN CWS Cubs SOUTH WSH ATL TBR MIA HOU TEX CENTRAL MN MIL STL KC COL AZ WEST SEA SF OAK LAD LAA SD Play each non division team 3 games (3 x 24= 72). Play each divisional team 18 games (5 x 18=90). 5 Division winners make playoffs with 3 wild card teams. (Could have the best wild card team get an automatic slot and have the next 4 teams play a one game play-in for the last 2 slots to keep the number of playoff teams at 10 overall.) Or 6 divisions of 5 teams: NorthEast BOS NYY NYM PHI BAL SouthEast WSH NC (from OAK) ATL TBR MIA MidWest CWS Cubs MN MIL STL Central KC TEX HOU COL AZ West SEA SF LAD LAA SD Play 3 or 4 games vs other divisions (4 x 15 + 3 x 10 teams=90) Play (18 x 4 teams=72) MidEast TOR PITT DET CLE CIN
  8. ST'ing numbers are not very telling. While true, Marco his hitting the ball hard, Pablo is doing much better than the last time he lost the FT job.
  9. If Prdey or Bogey get hurt, we may need Hernandez and Rutledge.
  10. The only place Hernandez or Rutledge might play barring injury is 3B, especially vs. LHPs, and in that one area, Rutledge is probably better. If a middle infielder gets hurt, Marco can get the call.
  11. Yes, you are right. I could see us trying to keep everyone except Pom & Porcello. I'm not saying we can expect Groome to be ready to fill either of their slots. I'm just saying it would be great if two out ofDevers, Travis & Groome come through enough to not need to replace 3 big contracts.
  12. I wouldn't have paid Abad $2M in the first place.
  13. I'm a big fan of Hernandez and like him better than Rutledge too, but Hernandez has options, and Rutledge might be a better hitter vs LHPs... something we might need to cover Pablo's biggest weakness.
  14. Will this be the opening day 25 man roster? DL: Price, Thornburg & C Smith SP: Sale, Porcello, ERod, Wright & Pom RP: Kimbrel, Kelly, Ross, Barnes, Hembree, Abad, Scott C: Leon & Vazquez 1B: Moreland & HanRam (DH) 2B: Pedey & Holt 3B: Pablo & Rutledge SS: Bogey LF: Beni & Young (DH) CF: JBJ RF: Betts Should get an opportunity: C: Swihart 1B: Travis 2B/SS/3B: Hernandez OF: Selsky SP: Kendrick (maybe Elias) RP: Martin, Workman, Ysla, (maybe Ramirez and Olmos) Others: Castillo, Craig, Marrero, Dominguez, Butler, Witte, Lake, Owens, Johnson, Velazquez, Haviland
  15. I put 92-95, but I would have gone 96+ if we were in any other division than the AL East.
  16. I think we'd have to be almost 10 games out to dump salary. Even without Price or Pom, I doubt that happens. I will say, in years past, when we look the very best on paper in spring is when we seem to fall the shortest on expectations.
  17. Small sample size alert and this is ST'ing not regular season, but it's nice to see 13 of our players with 18 or more ABs and an OPS over .800: ABs Player OPS 33 Pablo .818 31 Beni 1.126 31 Hernandez 1.041 28 HanRam .965 28 Travis 1.174 26 Selsky .905 24 Betts .954 23 Castillo 1.154 23 Young .940 22 Moreland .907 22 Swihart .809 18 Pedroia .844 Not doing too badly: .759 Marrero .747 JBJ .733 Craig Others: .345 Devers .458 Brentz (doing his best to get DFA'd- out of options) .500 Bogusevic .539 Dominguez .667 Holt .343 Leon in 14 ABs .498 Vazquez in 17 ABs .618 Rutledge in 16 ABs 1.000 Bogey in 6 ABs
  18. I agree that we should not get our hopes up too much, but Kendrick has started 4 games not a couple. I think Sox fans are looking for someone to step up and secure the 7th starter slot. Certainly Kendrick does not instill confidence in me that we have found our 7th starter, and maybe because everyone else competing for that slot has sucked, it raises Kendrick up higher on a pedestal. 15.95 Owens in 3 starts 9.00 Velazquez in 2 starts 5.40 Johnson in 1 start. Only Elias looks to be doing well, so far in limited action (3.60 in 1 start & 5 IP total in 3 games). These are all very small sample sizes against questionable batters. Time will tell.
  19. If we are in a race for a ring, which we should be, I can't see us trading Pablo or HanRam at the deadline. Even if Travis and Moreland are doing well, I doubt we decide to go with Holt-Rutledge-Hernandez at 3B and rely on a continuance of good play from Travis-Moreland-Young at 1B-DH. I could maybe see us trading Moreland, if Travis is doing very well. If we trade HanRam, we'd have to replace him, in kind, at a lower cost to make it worthwhile. If Pablo gets off to a good start and ends up having some trade value or even a lot of trade value, who plays 3B after trading him away?
  20. Agreed, 2019 is too early to expect Groome to start and do very well. We have 6 starters. If we keep 5 and hope Groome can ease his way into a starter role by 2020, we won't need to spend big on keeping all 6 or finding a replacement for Pom or Porcello (assuming we chose to keep Sale and one from pom/Porcello).
  21. I mentioned replacing Pom, because his and Sale's contracts are the first to expire. Assuming good health and no radical declines, I think we'll try to keep Sale. Maybe GRoome will not be ready until the following year, when Porcello's deal expires. I do think he may replace Porcello instead, due to his age. Eitherway, having Groome become good enough to replace Pom or Porcello without a big drop off would go a long way towards helping us keep everyone else we want to keep.
  22. The only relief comes when we drop Pablo and HanRam, most likely after the 2018 season. However, with extensions pending, and Sale coming off the books and needing to be re-signed or replaced, we'll be "tight" even still. We really need at least 2 of these guys to give us great production at a low cost, so we can spend elsewhere: Devers Travis Groome If we can replace Pablo with devers, HanRam with Travis and Pomeranz with Groome, without losing much production, we might be able to squeak by and keep all our major pieces without going $40M over any year and without going 3 or 4 straight years over the limit (assuming we reset this season).
  23. I doubt we trade HanRam, but $22M is a lot to pay for a DH. Even Papi never made that.
  24. Yes, but there is also a penalty for going $40M or more over the limit, even if you are reset, so yes, we can go over, but within reason..
  25. 3 come off the books: Young ($6.5M luxury tax number), Moreland ($5.5M) and Abad ($2.05M). Options: $13M Kimbrel (up $2.5M from his current luxury tax number) $12.5M C Sale (up $6M from his current luxury tax number) Assuming we take the options, we aren't left with much spare room, and we haven't even counted arb raises.
