  1. If Swi hits .280 and Vaz hits .220, but Vaz can save a run defensively every 4-5 games, Vaz is the better choice.
  2. I thought Pom was one of the best pitchers available (thinking he was healthy). I still hated the trade from the first minute it was made. Now, I'm double whammied.
  3. ...I wonder if DD should have backed out of this deal when he had the chance. Should have never made the trade to start with.
  4. MLBTR... Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright finally seems to be putting his long bout with right shoulder bursitis behind him, writes Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. Wright, a 2016 All-Star whose season ended in August after he injured his shoulder as a pinch-runner, threw three hitless innings against the Twins on Saturday. The 32-year-old indicated afterward that he’s “in good position to be ready for Opening Day.”
  5. I'd think about it, if Hernandez was a plus defender at SS. I don't think he is.
  6. Rutledge probably rates to be a better hitter vs LHPs- something Pablo really struggles with. Rutledge might be a better defensive 3Bman than Hernandez, and 3B is the most likely IF position needing help. These two factors make the Rutledge-Hernandez comparison a lot closer than ST'ing numbers show. Hernandez vs LHPs: MLB: He only has 9 PAs vs LHPs (less that 1/6th of his career PAs. Obviously for a reason.) AAA ('16) .736 in 67 ABs AAA ('15) .710 in 54 ABs AA ('15) .731 in 88 ABs A+ ('14) .531 in 118 ABs A (2013) .595 in 95 ABs A (2012) .459 in 47 ABs A- ('12) .496 in 59 ABs Marco seems to have improved vs LHPs over the years, but Rutledge has a .721 career MLB sply vs LHPs in over 330 PAs. He had a .777 OPS in 2015 AAA (97 ABs). In 2014, he had a 1.318 OPS in 18 ABs. He had an .855 OPS vs lefties in 2013 (29 ABs). I'm not sure we can say Hernandez is better vs LHPs based on just ST'ing numbers.
  7. Of course the line-up matters, if not just for the fact that our lead off hitter got 772 PAs and our 9th hitter got 628. That's over 140 more PAs for a better hitter over a worse one. The difference between batting Betts 3rd or 9th would be over 100 PAs. How can that be insignificant?
  8. There's a lot to talk up. Holt has a lot of value.
  9. That's why Rutledge will probably start the year on the 25 man roster. With Selsky looking good, maybe we might look to trade Holt, so Hernandez can join the big club on opening day.
  10. Is Pom the next Buch?
  11. If HanRam is not ready to play 1B by opening day, would keeping Travis on the 25 man roster make sense? If yes, at whose expense? (Rutledge?) Playing Moreland vs LHPs does make a lot of sense. HanRam at DH full time might force Young into the OF with JBJ likely getting time off vs lefties with Beni getting a day off here and there. Another alternative might be to trade 1 or two of these guys to make room for Hernandez, Selsky and/or Swihart: Holt Young Leon or Vaz Rutledge
  12. ST'ing success or failure have little to do with season performance. Late season small sample size slumps of hot streaks have little to do with what happens the next season. With all due respect, I think you rely a little too much on "what have you done recently".
  13. MLBTR... Although Red Sox first baseman/designated hitter Hanley Ramirez hasn’t been able to play the field this spring because of a shoulder issue, manager John Farrell doesn’t regard it as a serious injury, relays Rob Bradford of WEEI. “We feel like there’s been a little bit of a breakthrough here,” Farrell said Saturday. “We’re anticipating that throwing to continue to progress and ramp up. The goal, obviously, is still to get him games at first base while in camp, and we’re moving towards that.” Ramirez hasn’t been able to throw, but Farrell pointed out that “he still continues to drill work and ground balls at first base.”
  14. ST'ing top OPS (23+ ABs) 1.151 Travis 1.079 Hernandez 1.023 Castillo 1.006 Beni .965 Sandoval .940 Pedey .920 Selsky .900 Moreland .878 Swihart .853 Betts .827 Holt .804 Ramirez .801 D Marrero .689 Craig .644 JBJ .444 Brentz Pretty interesting how the top 5 and 8 of the top 9 were not FT starters on the Sox for all or most of last year. 5 of the top 9 will probably not make the opening day 25 man roster. That is a good sign of our extended depth... I guess.
  15. We could see our 7th starter (Kendicks?) start as soon as game six, if Pom is not ready.
  16. You mean 2015? I still think Holt has higher trade value than his value to us, but I'm not for handing him away just to make room for Hernandez (Selsky and Rutledge).
  17. If DD thinks Rutledge is a better fielder at 3B and hits LHPs better tha Pablo and Hernandez, then I think the call is close enough to choose to start the season with Hernandez at AAA, and I'm one of Marco's biggest supporters. (I even suggested we look to trade Holt, so Marco would be on the 40 man roster as our utility IF'er.)
  18. Will this be how our starters line up? 4/3 PIT Porcello 4/4 off 4/5 PIT Sale 4/6 PIT ERod 4/7 @Det Wright 4/8 @ Det Porcello 4/9 @ Det Pomeranz 4/10 @ Det Sale 4/11 BAL ERod 4/12 BAL Wright 4/13 off 4/14 TBR Porcello +1 4/15 TBR Sale 4/16 TBR ERod 4/17 TBR Wright 4/18 @Tor Pomeranz +4
  19. This won't be the opening day line-up, but it would be my choice vs the RH'er: 1) Beni 2) Pedey 3) Betts 4) HanRam 5) JBJ 6) Bogey 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon This would be my second choice: 1) Pedey 2) Bogey 3) Beni 4) Betts 5) HanRam 6) JBJ 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon This what I think it will be: 1) Pedey 2) Beni 3) Betts 4) HanRam 5) Bogey 6) JBJ 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon I could see JF trying this... 1) Pedey 2) Bogey 3) Beni 4) Betts 5) HR 6) JBJ 7) Pablo 8) Moreland 9) Leon
  20. Betts and HanRam both hit 30+ last year. JBJ had 26.
  21. I know I may be solo on this one, but if we really want Hernandez on the 25 man roster, I'd see what we could get for Holt. In no way would I hand him away, and I would not trade him for lesser value, but Hernandez is a better fielding SS, maybe even at 2b and 3B. Trading Holt would put our OF depth in peril, but with Selsky looking good, we might be okay. I still think, as much as I like Hernandez, he should start the season in AAA.
  22. I'd do away with the NL and AL and cut even more down on travel costs by making divisions even more regional. EAST TOR BOS NYY NYM PHI BAL NORTH PITT DET CLE CIN CWS Cubs SOUTH WSH ATL TBR MIA HOU TEX CENTRAL MN MIL STL KC COL AZ WEST SEA SF OAK LAD LAA SD Play each non division team 3 games (3 x 24= 72). Play each divisional team 18 games (5 x 18=90). 5 Division winners make playoffs with 3 wild card teams. (Could have the best wild card team get an automatic slot and have the next 4 teams play a one game play-in for the last 2 slots to keep the number of playoff teams at 10 overall.) Or 6 divisions of 5 teams: NorthEast BOS NYY NYM PHI BAL SouthEast WSH NC (from OAK) ATL TBR MIA MidWest CWS Cubs MN MIL STL Central KC TEX HOU COL AZ West SEA SF LAD LAA SD Play 3 or 4 games vs other divisions (4 x 15 + 3 x 10 teams=90) Play (18 x 4 teams=72) MidEast TOR PITT DET CLE CIN
  23. ST'ing numbers are not very telling. While true, Marco his hitting the ball hard, Pablo is doing much better than the last time he lost the FT job.
  24. If Prdey or Bogey get hurt, we may need Hernandez and Rutledge.
  25. The only place Hernandez or Rutledge might play barring injury is 3B, especially vs. LHPs, and in that one area, Rutledge is probably better. If a middle infielder gets hurt, Marco can get the call.
