  1. I could see it. Leon Nunez Hernandez or Holt (Lin) Brentz
  2. If it looks we can't keep Bogey AND JBJ, then one could see how Bora$$ could tip the scales to trading JBJ despite him having one more year of control. It is easier to find a LF'er than a SS, but Beni's D worries me, and Bogey seems to be as streaky as JBJ....maybe more so.
  3. 1) Lin has proven nothing, except that he's a decent fielding IF'er. 2) Hernandez is a good defender at 2B and a decent SS. 3) We don't need anyone to play CF. We have 3. We simply put some one in LF and move Beni to CF. 4) Since Nunez can play LF, we don't need Brentz. I guess I don't see why we get all convoluted to make room for Lin & Brentz. Nunez, Holt and Hernandez or Nunez, Brentz and Hernandez look just as good or better. If Pedey goes down, and we need Nunez elsewhere, I like Hernandez at 2B more than Lin, Holt or Marrero. If Bogey goes down, I like Hernandez and Lin about the same. Holt and Merrero are behind both. 3B? Maybe Lin is better than Hernandez, Holt and Marrero. As for who is the best defensive OF'er, it's a choice among evils. Holt and Nunez already have ML experience there..
  4. Let's say we might sign a solid #4 OF'er to a contract worth $18M/3. Let's say we pay the luxury tax the next 3 years: .20 x $6M = $1.2M .30 x $6M = $1.8M .50 x $6M = $3M Total Tax: $6M That deal would essentially amount to $24M/3. If we brought up Castillo AND (big "and"), he could do as well as the free agent above, Castillo's "added cost" would just be $10.4M/3. That's a savings to Henry of $13+M. Now, if Castillo bombs (again), Henry would lose the $10.4M and then have to go out and find another OF'er. (Note: these are not the only two choices.)
  5. They still pay him an average $10.4M x 7 years. The only "amnesty" is getting out of the tax.
  6. How about JBJ's 254 foot throw to nail the "unsuspecting" Carpenter? They say his throw was 96 mph. Finding new ways to win. Gotta love this team!
  7. They're paying him anyway. The tough call is the tax or no tax. If we pay 20% next year, 30% in 2019 and 50% in 2020, that's about $10.4M in 3-year combined taxes. Now, one could argue, if we would sign a guy like Castillo to be our 4th OF'er this winter for $11M/3, then it might be worth it, but if he flops, it would be like a double flop. I think Brentz is more likely given a shot than Castillo. Plus, maybe we move Chavis to LF at some point. Barfield and Mars might surprise as well.
  8. So much for the team that can't "hit when it counts".
  9. No runs or RBIs from Nunez or Devers, and yet we pull one out. Good to see others starting to come up big. Shut down pen. Bogey seemingly snapping out of it. Betts finally looking like Betts. Keep it up!
  10. It also says that if we add Castillo for just one day, his remaining contract will count against the luxury tax to the end. The rule actually hurts Castillo's chance to get a call-up, since the Sox are gambling on him being good enough to stay (and play) on the 40 man for 3 more years. I get the spirit of the rule, but Castillo looks to remain in purgatory.
  11. Castillo 4 for 5 with a 2B & HR.
  12. Brentz with his 28th HR (Wed night) in 1st inning.
  13. I shudder to think about it. Price and Pablo's contracts with zero production? OUCH! I'm hopeful Price can at least come back next year.
  14. Since Bogey only has 2 more years left and probably with decent arb contracts, I'm not sure he'd be what Miami would be looking for, unless they would flip him afterwards. I do agree. Stanton is the "Chris Sale" of hitters. You just don't get chances to acquire guys like him very often. I, too, would avoid giving up Devers, but he might be the one guy Miami demands. Throwing in Castillo might help defray the massive cost, but Stanton is not overpaid. They don't have to take back salary to trade him for top young talent. Any deal not including Devers or Beni, or players with 2-3 years of control or less would, in reality, probably have to start with this: ERod (4 arb years) Groome Chavis Mata Flores
  15. I'd love for DD to find a big 1B bat (hopefully not long term), keep Nunez and maybe even more. That could put us $20-30M over next year at a 20% tax. JH can deal with that. We can also deal with getting the 37th pick, instead of the 27th. I don't see many big impact FAs that are likely to sign for 1-2 years, so maybe he goes large and long on a big bat via trade or free agency. Nunez would hedge our bets against a Pedey injury and also provide a 4th OF'er and back-up for SS and 3B. With Wright and Workman returning and hopefully Ross, Smith and Thornburg as well, we can get by with no pitching additions needed. How many teams can say that? Let Moreland, Young, Abad, Boyer & Fister walk. Arb raises will be expensive, but we can trade Holt and maybe a RP'er this winter- like Hembree, who is out of options. I'm not expecting big returns, but we can cut a little salary by replacing Holt and maybe Ross or Kelly (with non arb guy Hembree).
  16. I meant 6 or 7 as I originally suggested, and yes, that extra year or two can be huge.
  17. I meant a Tampa Bayesque deal, where they lock a player up for 6 years right out of the gate. (6 from now.)
  18. I've said a number of times that now that the luxury tax is re-set, I think DD will be free to go over just about as much as needed next year and maybe even 2019. When the tax reaches 50% on the third year, the reigns might be tightened considerably. I've even revised my initial concern about being penalized 10 spots in the draft for going more than $20M over. I doubt that will be much of an issue for DD to worry about.
  19. LOWE's
  20. I've yet to see JF cross the plate, except to try and yank a pitcher not knowing he couldn't.
  21. Because nothing in baseball is easily predictable.
  22. Most of our top prospects have panned out, and top prospects is what Miami would want.
  23. As soon as the Sox show they don't care, I won't either.
  24. With Pedey's age and health concerns, keeping a guy like Nunez makes sense. It doesn't have to be Nunez specifically, but I'm glad nobody is advocating Holt being our 2Bman next year (or top utility guy). I've always liked Hernandez, but I think we could use a guy like Nunez back PLUS a big bat 1Bman.
