  1. Bogey's defense has not improved. The numbers show he has slightly declined since his second year's glimmer of hope on defense. I'm not sure this evidence of "trying", but he's clearly the best we have at SS, and we have too many other higher priorities than fixing our SS defense.
  2. Please. No Hosmer.
  3. I think, if they take on HRam's salary, we'd need to add a lot more to the deal. I like the plan, though. If we will need to sign a SP'er, too. Cobb would probably put us over the second tier limit.
  4. It's hard to know what it will take to get Stanton. There's only a few teams that can afford him. His $25M luxury tax cost is better than his actual cost, so he may be worth more to the handful of teams that are straddling the line or going over in the next few years. JD Martinez is not really comparable to Stanton, but he only costs money and for less years, too.
  5. 29th in WAR, but he was only under our control through 2015 not 2016. He ranked 46th from 2010-2015. 91st in ERA- at 99. 2014-2015 alone: 28th in WAR 21st in ERA- at 85
  6. Not at all. I was a big Lackey defender. I also did not believe the rumor that he would sit out rather than play for the minimum. We were out of it, when we traded 4 of our 5 SP'ers (Lester, Lackey, Peavy and Doubront) plus Miller. Most were FA's to be or with one year left (Lackey). I did not like who we got for Lackey and the others, but I felt trading them was the right thing to do. The fact that we ended up with ERod, Kelly, Hembree and Porcello (via Cespedes) is mostly what people are upset about. Those trades are separate from the low ball offer made to Lester. Once that happened, I feel he was not coming back. I actually liked Kelly, and thought he'd be a nice starter for us for 4 years vs one year of Lackey- pouting or otherwise. Lackey would not have signed with us had he stayed here that one more year, anyways. Whatever he did after 2015 was moot. Also, we do not win in 2015 with just Lackey added back. Had we brought Lackey back and signed Scherzer instead of Pablo, maybe...
  7. From 2014 to 2016, Rick placed... 24th in WAR (9.6) 28th in WHIP (1.18) 38th in ERA- (91) While those numbers were largely driven by 2016, his overall 3 year numbers look pretty decent...maybe not Cy Young worthy, but not too bad either. 2014-2017: (150 qualifying SP'ers) 24th in WAR (11.7) 56th ERA- (94) Note: other Sox pitchers (2014-2017 ERA- rankings 6. Sale 72 19. Pom 80 20. Price 80 56. Porc 94 66. ERod 97
  8. We had many open positions in 2004 and 2013. Both of those years, we signed mid-level guys that worked out well. This year we have 1 open position (1B) and two iffy ones (DH and 2B). Could signing Duda or Morrison, Nunez and C Beltran orJ Werth really help us like 2004 (Papi, Mueller & Millar) and 2013 (Vic, Naps, Uehara)?
  9. You are right. Papi was not a know bash brother when they acquired Millar and Mueller. I do think we will see an uptick in power from our returning players, but I doubt it can be enough to bring us even to average next year. I feel we need a feared power guy in the 4 slot. That would also take some pressure off those who were forced to hit from that slot this year.
  10. Top Free Agents this Winter 1B/DH: Santana Hosmer Duda Morrison Alonso Moreland OF or DH: JD Martinez *J Upton L Cain C Gonzalez J Bruce M Cabrera C Rasmus J Werth C Beltran J Jaso 3B: Moustakas E Nunez T Frazier T Plouffe SP'ers: Arrieta Darvish Cobb *Tanaka *Cueto W-Y Chen Estrada Sabathia 2B: N Walker H Kendrick D Espinosa B Lawrie B Phillips SS: Z Cozart A Escobar *JJ Hardy Catcher: Lucroy C Ruiz W Castillo RP'ers: W Davis J McGee B Shaw T Watson
  11. I said it at the time as well.
  12. I never missed Lackey.
  13. Me 2
  14. Porcello's best ERA- seasons: 72 2016 87 2009 89 2014 102 2017 107 2013 110 2012 114 2011 117 2010 118 2015 Not so surprising that 3 of his best 4 seasons have been in the last 4 years (his prime years). Then again, other numbers tell another story: FIP- 81 2016 89 2013 94 2012 96 2014 97 2017 100 2011 103 2010 104 2015 107 2017 107 2009 Still, 3 of his best 5 seasons have been in the last 4 seasons.
  15. I'm guessing this is sarcasm.
  16. Marisnik .588> .815 (+227) Gonzalez .694> .907 (+213) Gurriel .684> .817 (+133) Correa .811> .941 (+130) Springer .815> .889 (+74) Bregman .791> .827 (+36) Altuve .928> .957 (+29) Gattis .826> .767 (-59) Unlike the Sox, they saw all but one returning player improve Lost players: Valbuena .816 T Hernandez .724 J Castro .684 T White .664 C Rasmus .641 T Kemp .621 New players: Reddick .847 McCann .759 Beltran .666 (remember the posters who wanted him?)
  17. Every move Theo made went through Ben first. (Just kidding) By the way, he was Co-GM when Theo went AWOL. Brief experience. He was also a big part of our scouting for many years before and during Theo's tenure.
  18. What an amazing turn-around for the Astros' offense. They went from nearly leading the league in K's last year to dead last this year. Their team OPS went from .735 (worse than this year's Sox) to a league leading. .823.
  19. That's all I meant. I didn't mean go up to the plate saying, "I'm going to swing- no matter what." Some of our players, IMO, are too predictable. I'm not asking for a major overhaul of our hitting philosophy. Same with bunting. I hate bunting, but sometimes you just have to do it to keep the defenses honest. (We actually don't bunt much, so I'm fine there.)
  20. This from soxprospects.com ---The Red Sox became the first team to sign a prospect from Tibet, bringing on a 16-year-old catcher who played for the Chinese national team. The only debate as of now is what to call him. His birth name is Qiang Ba Ren Zeng. He is listed on the Instructional League roster as Renzeng Qiangba. But according to MLB.com, he likes to go by Justin Qiang. ---Blake Swihart will play winter ball in the Dominican Republic and will focus on catching, according to Christopher Smith of Masslive.com
  21. There's a glut of mediocre 1Bmen that will not cost much and will take one year, if we offer slightly more, but with basically just one position to fill, and still no clean up hitter on the team, going mid-range seems lame to me. We could try to sign 2-3 mid level players- maybe 1-2 for the bench and cross our fingers, but I'm thinking bigger. Signing guys like Millar and Mueller when you already have two bash brothers in the line-up is easier to do then when you have none.
  22. Theo did admit, "We made mistakes with free agency", so I think he was on board with Offerman, Manny, Lugo, CC, Lackey and the AGon trade and extension.
  23. Certain players just need to swing at the first pitch a little more foten, if only just to keep the pitcher "honest". If 2-3 of our young players turn the declines around next year, we may not need a couple big boosts to the offense. A full year of Devers could make a big difference all by itself. Maybe one big bat for clean-up is all we need.
  24. HRam needs 497 PAs and pass a physical to vest. He had 553 PAs this year. It won't really take a benching to deny him the vesting. Sign Duda (very cheap) to DH vs RHPs and play 1B vs LHPs, and HRam will be lucky to get 300 PAs. He could also get 600 PAs and flunk the physical.
  25. His 2014 season was pretty good, so maybe it's an even year thing.
