  1. This from soxprospects.com ---The Red Sox became the first team to sign a prospect from Tibet, bringing on a 16-year-old catcher who played for the Chinese national team. The only debate as of now is what to call him. His birth name is Qiang Ba Ren Zeng. He is listed on the Instructional League roster as Renzeng Qiangba. But according to MLB.com, he likes to go by Justin Qiang. ---Blake Swihart will play winter ball in the Dominican Republic and will focus on catching, according to Christopher Smith of Masslive.com
  2. There's a glut of mediocre 1Bmen that will not cost much and will take one year, if we offer slightly more, but with basically just one position to fill, and still no clean up hitter on the team, going mid-range seems lame to me. We could try to sign 2-3 mid level players- maybe 1-2 for the bench and cross our fingers, but I'm thinking bigger. Signing guys like Millar and Mueller when you already have two bash brothers in the line-up is easier to do then when you have none.
  3. Theo did admit, "We made mistakes with free agency", so I think he was on board with Offerman, Manny, Lugo, CC, Lackey and the AGon trade and extension.
  4. Certain players just need to swing at the first pitch a little more foten, if only just to keep the pitcher "honest". If 2-3 of our young players turn the declines around next year, we may not need a couple big boosts to the offense. A full year of Devers could make a big difference all by itself. Maybe one big bat for clean-up is all we need.
  5. HRam needs 497 PAs and pass a physical to vest. He had 553 PAs this year. It won't really take a benching to deny him the vesting. Sign Duda (very cheap) to DH vs RHPs and play 1B vs LHPs, and HRam will be lucky to get 300 PAs. He could also get 600 PAs and flunk the physical.
  6. His 2014 season was pretty good, so maybe it's an even year thing.
  7. Especially since he was on a pace for 45 errors per 160 games. He made 30 errors in 118 games between AA, AAA and MLB. 6 errors in 17 games last winter. That's 36 in 135 games since the end of last season.
  8. My head is spinning!
  9. MLBTR on the Sox managerial hunt... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/10/the-red-sox-managerial-search.html
  10. Well, with DD as the GM, one can imagine almost anything.
  11. Zito and Gagne were "dominant", too.
  12. Also.... Eric Gagne Brandon Webb Bartolo Colon Barry Zito Pat Hentgen
  13. Because bad fielding 3Bmen often move to 1B. Look, I realize he's just 20. He has a lot of time to grow and learn and improve. I'm fine with giving him more time at 3B. There's a good chance he can become decent to plus on defense over time. I'm a little worried about learning curve and the affect that might have on our chances at a ring next year, if his curve is flatter than we hope for. I'm not jumping at an opportunity to move Devers to 1B, but it should be an option to consider, if other options don't come together or if we feel adding a clean up hitting 3Bman is the best way to help the line-up. BTW, 1B is considered an easier position to play than 3B. It has its challenges, but one should think Devers would become a decnt 1Bman faster than he can a decent 3Bman defensively. I could be wrong, but I doubt I'm alone in my thinking.
  14. Not many. Not many even have one Cy Young winner on the staff, period, let alone two with a third who has finished top 6 five years in a row going on six.
  15. Pretty much sums it all up nicely. No talk of JF or Bruce as the DH for us. I guess everyone thinks HRam will not play 1B next year.
  16. Good points. Price was on my list before "the incident". I think the whole thing was blown up for media effect. The Pedey "incident" bothered me more, but even that was blown up.
  17. Not bad. Nunez at 3B and Devers at 1B is not the best D in the world, but having Nunez does give us some flex, if Pedey goes down. We could move Devers back to 3B and find a cheap 1Bman or maybe HRam could play 1B. Another bench guy could be Marco Hernandez. We won't add Castillo's $11M to the luxury tax budget.
  18. He'd be a DH, so the defense would only hurt when an OF'er needs rest. I've always liked Upton, but he scares me too much. He reminds me of HRam with the roller coaster career. OPS since becoming FT in 2009: .899 .799 .898 .785 .818 .833 .790 .775 .901 I guess a range of .775 to .901 is not too wide, but he's had too many seasons below .820 for my liking (5 out of 8) and for what he will make. He's been under .800 in 4 of his last 8 seasons. Over 29 HRs in 3 of the last 4 years is pretty good, though.
  19. Bruce could be a good option. His 2014 and 2015 years scare me a bit, but all the options out there have questions or concerns. He turns 31 in April, which isn't too bad, but often times, players decline after 31 and sometimes quickly. Bruce does have 25 + HRs in 7 of his last 8 years with 30+ in 5 of the last 8 years. He has 69 HRs in his last 2 years (273+ TBs each year). His career OBP is rather low (.319) and he's been lower than that in 3 of his last 4 years, but he may work out well for us.
  20. Certainly signing a big pitcher and trading ERod would give more confidence in the rotation. I'm not against the idea, especially if JD and Moose are way too over-priced or choose to go elsewhere. Including JBJ in a trade would be fine by me, as much as I really appreciate him, but only two years of control for Ozuna seems too short. I guess it fits the "two year window" just right. 3 years of JBJ 3-4 years of ERod for 2 years of Ozuna It might take a deal like this to win a ring, but if we don't, we will have given up too much. I guess that's the gamble possibly at stake.
  21. Guess that showed how much he thinks about Scott.
  22. The one major area of improvement needed is power (clean-up hitter). While we don't need to have the best, I'm not sure Moreland, Morrison, Duda or Alonso is going to even help at all. Maybe Santana would work.
  23. Yes, look at Allen Craig.
  24. I think I read somewhere, he will not be getting surgery and will have to play through "it" next year and perhaps beyond. Not sure that helps answer your question.
  25. Yes, but that's up to Henry and his money. Despite the fact that JD has only played more than 123 games once in his whole career, I place him slightly above Moose. 1) Playing DH may help him play more. 2) No second round draft pick lost. 3) Solves the 4th OF'er vacancy and clean-up hitter hole with one signing. We may not be able to sign JD, even if we offer more money. He may love it in AZ. He may take less to play elsewhere. Plus, DD may not offer the most. Moose is my second choice. Duda or Morrison may be a short term fix to bridge us to Machado next winter. A Trade might be plan C or D for me.
